I sort of lucked out playing the second encounter first, then played the others only long after.
What amazed me back then is how well optimized the game was to run on my older PII 450MHz with a poor video card, it was also amazing to see it hold up very well as textures/effects were decent...

I think the Second Encounter is indeed a cut above with regard to maps variations, still very much
tunnels/rooms but at least you are going to have different settings than just Egypt, plus some pretty weird platformer or physics defying segments here and there.

Honestly with their strategy being double and quadruple down on little cores pushing IPC to the max on the big ones like this doesn't sound impossible. A welcome target for sure.

For big cores I would guess 16+ won't become more common as AMD implementing big little too could see the amount of large counts lower for higher single threaded performance, same way Intel is supposedly...

Plan was to release 8 cores cannonlake, there were even some leaked sample CPUs a while back. They would have had 8 core skylake + IPC in 2016-2017 had all gone well with 10 nm, regardless of AMD, but probably very pricey at the highest end. Not that pricey to be honest as 6 haswell cores...
