Question 7900XT/XTX for PC VR gaming. Thoughts?

The card work great for VR. After the sickness started to settle, slightly happier mental events began to stir. This is about gaming after all. It should make me happy (it does).

I have the V1 G2 but got the updated cable. It has always worked well for me, except the tracking is sensitive to room lighting and needs to be used in the same environment it was calibrated for.

It would be weird if you wouldn't have a few people trying to recreate something that was so important to them in their youths like arcades, but it really seems like a tiny niche.

The one thing that I see a lot more, but what seems still very confined to enthusiasts, is getting older 3D games to run in VR, like DOOM and such. This is so hardcore gamers have more to play and these older games are easier to run as well.

There is a recent port of Freespace in VR, which works quite well. I would really like to see Descent (D2X-XL or DXX-Rebirth) in VR too. There is a ton of old maps and custom content for these games, and they can run easily on modern hardware.

I got a used G1 Professional Edition for about $200. Haven't tried to use it but the local site I bought it from hasn't given me any grief so far so let's assume it works fine. What kind of experience can I look forward to, with a 3090, if I get around to setting it up in my annual vacation (coming up in 8 months maybe?). Will it work directly with SteamVR or is it totally dependent on Windows Mixed Reality crap for the initial setup?

You need both WMR and the WMR SteamVR runtime. Also get fpsvr, and set the default steamvr resolution to 50%. The 3090 runs everything fine at that half resolution. You can have per-game settings of 200% for well optimized games to get 100% for that game.
