Prefect day for it today. Some clouds but none near the sun. Around 72 degrees.
Sat in back yard and drank Blue Moon. Tried to Listen to Pink Floyd but Sonos refused to play it. Had to play it on my phone.

Ended up going out for a walk roughly when the peak would have been. The haters were right... it's NBD without totality. It got slightly dusk at best.

It's not. We did both the annular (ring of fire) in Albuquerque last year which peaked at 91% and totality this time.

While I remember it getting notably dimmer and much cooler during the annular, it's not much a preview of what you see and feel in the moments leading up to and during totality. There's definitely something wild that goes on with your senses in those final minute or two right before the sun disappears.

Right before it got dark I remember telling my wife it looked like the world was being illuminated by a flash light, and then totality. If there was ever a time I could feel much pupils dilating, that was it.

The term I learned today after taking this pic is that this is called the Diamond Ring shot...

We completely lucked out in Dallas...the entire time before totality, clouds were constantly covering the sun with just brief pockets where she peeked through. Then about 3 minutes before totality, the skies became completely blue....

Edit: there is a 2nd diamond ring at the end of totality...I have just attached my pic of the 2nd one...

Cloudy in upstate NY Adirondack park but it was still really cool. Wife and I picked a random hike and were alone in the middle of the woods waiting for it. At 90-95%+ it’s like twilight but the color temperature is off, and then all of a sudden it’s actually dark, darker than I expected. Contrary to what I read the birds had been quiet all day and then got really loud for a few seconds. Couple of nearby coyotes started howling and my wife promptly clamped the dog’s snout because he has a tendency to howl back ..

Just made it back from middle of nowhere Indiana and what an amazing experience! We found a church parking lot right off I-74 and settled in. Totality was an experience like no other. The temp dropped from 75*(24C) to 69*(20C) and all the birds started nesting for the "evening". It felt like 8:30 at night not 3:30 in the afternoon.

So glad we decided to drive the 8 hours to experience this. It was completely worth it!

Was completely overcast. Took a chance going west from San Antonio with the intention of maybe hitting Uvalde but the clouds weren't improving at all so just stopped halfway there in Hondo instead. The low crowds broke up enough that I could see the crescent sun for ~30 seconds a couple of times when it was around 95% eclipse a little before totality. Even knowing what would happen it was still pretty shocking seeing just how quickly it got really dark on totality. Still an awesome experience with 3 1/2 minutes of totality and even with the crappiest imaginable weather short of thunderstorms I was way more impressed by it than I was the annular eclipse we got last year where the weather was awesome. Traffic wasn't too bad, though likely because of the absolute crap cloud forecast. 100% worth the trip but can't say I'm not extremely envious of people who actually got to see the corona today.

What kind of filter were you using that allowed you to capture the flares?

I'm on night shift so was in bed but did wake up around the time it was happening so looked out the window and this is the best view I had. Clouds.

At least I know I didn't miss much from here. Probably could have seen it partially through clouds but didn't really feel like getting dressed to go see. I probably would have if it was clear. It felt like it got darker though, but it was hard to tell if it was actually the eclipse doing that or just the clouds.

I actually took the filter off right before totality and then put it back on after the 2nd diamond ring shot.

I found this also (which I didn't know before I took the shots - I did know you are supposed to remove the filter during totality).

Really makes me want to invest in a super long lens like a 150-600. The extra detail you get on the solar flares is just 🤯
I got a picture with my 80-200 and 1.4TC but not nearly that level of detail 🤤🤤🤤

I still had my cheesy cardboard glasses from the last North American eclipse. We were only at about 85% totality with intermittent cloud cover but I did get to see it at about the peak - for us. Seeing a crescent sun is interesting. Total eclipses are pretty cool but I'm not going to drive a few hundred miles to see one.

Those are some nice shots.

I only had my 200 mm f/2.8L lens, and a bit of a jury-rigged filter I attached to the lens hood, which made it hard to quickly pull on and off. Though, I'll have to process the photos when I get back home to see what I really captured.

I remember the 2017 eclipse we got around 92% in San Antonio and it just looked like everything was grayer, like you turned down the color saturation in photoshop on the world. Today when we got past 90% or so it felt almost like an ominous storm coming, especially with the temperature drop. Pretty crazy how fast it darkened as soon as we hit totality.

You also need to really really really good noise removal software....my ISO was set to auto (based on shutter speed/aperature) and ended up being 12800 so it was super noisy straight out of the camera. I was using a Sony A1 which gave me a 50MB raw file....I used DxO photolab 5 and Topaz Denoise which removed pretty much all of the noise...

this is what my uncropped RAW file looks like straight out of the camera :O
