Question Which AM4 CPUs support PCIe gen4?

I'm surprised that I've forgotten this, but I'm spec'ing a system and gen4 M.2 would be nice, but the board manufacturer says it depends on the processor installed. I couldn't find a quick answer via google so I thought I'd ask here.

@In2Photos Thanks! That page also answered my question about why the 4000 series doesn't get the love.

- edit - wait, none of the G-type CPUs get PCIe4? I could have sworn I've built some AM4 PCs with gen4 SSDs and getting the expected bandwidth...

Peter/Paul situation before apu came into play. Packing the GPU onto the CPU didn't leave enough lanes for Gen 4. The chipset handles it with a max of X4 bandwidth.

As said above, 3000 and 5000 series, with a couple of exceptions, such as:
- G-series (ones with iGPU in them)
- 5500
- 5700 (5700X has Gen 4, 5700 doesn't)

5700 non X is boneheaded marketing.

Sorry I missed the follow up, no notification. I’d definitely go with a 5000 series even with 3000s supporting PCIe 4. Of course, if you are upgrading a an existing CPU. Surprised that my wife’s 5700G doesn’t support it. She needed a larger drive and a good PCIe 4 drive was on sale. Only small gains compared to the previous PCIe 3 drive.

For AM4:

All 3000 series CPU's (Matisse) and 5000 series CPU's (Vermeer) support PCIe 4.0 lanes from the CPU. On a motherboard level, you need to carefully read which slots (standard PCIe and m.2) actually support PCIe 4.0 signals. RTFM. Some chipsets only allow PCIe 3.0 on some slots (depends on what's populated on the board).

3000G series (Picasso/Zen+), 4000G series (Renoir/Zen2) and 5000G series (Cezanne/Zen3) only support PCIe 3.0 lanes, as a rule. Some chipsets only allow PCIe 2.0 on some slots (depends on what's populated on the board)

PCIe 4.0 drives haven't enticed me at all. 2TB 970 EVO Plus is already stupid fast. I don't believe we're at the point where PCIe 3.0 vs 4.0 matters for consumer GPU's (1-3% and probably only for a 4080/4090).
