Russia is taking huge casualties doing this so if their goal is to preserve their men it is a disaster. The most likely answer for the slow pace of advance is that’s the best they can do.I am not a military man but some people who know these things have said because they are slowly depleting the Ukrainian military this way and also not putting their men in too much danger by advancing too quickly. Russians are adapting to the current situation in Ukraine and acting accordingly, and it seems like they are avoiding past mistakes.
The goal is is to significantly weaken the Ukrainian military first, second is the objective of territory. So advances are happening, slowly. This means Russian manufacturing and industrial output are far outpacing anything from Ukraine and even its "allies" and the Russians are confident in their approach with this war.
