5G modems are great for business laptops
Most business laptops are used in 2 places: the office and at home. Both places have WiFi. How do you reckon all those executives have managed until now on their non-5G MacBooks?!

There's a case to be made for modems in laptops, but only for niche market segments. This feature is not going to help with market penetration.

Mass production of the 10.7Gbps LPDDR5X is scheduled to begin by the second half of the year, following verification with mobile application processor (AP) and mobile device providers.
This means the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 coming in October 2024, will have support for Samsung's LPDDR5X 10.7 Gbps!!!

8 Gen 1: LPDDR5-6400
8 Gen 2: LPDDR5X-8533
8 Gen 3: LPDDR5X/5T-9600
8 Gen 4: LPDDR5X-10700 (?)
8 Gen 5 : LPDDR6-12800 (?)

Is it possible that the Snapdragon X Elite Gen 2 coming in late 2025/early 2026 could adopt this LPDDR5X-10700?

I was previously thinking X Elite G2 would stick to an LPDDR5 variant, and not support LPDDR6 for reasons of cost and volume.

Previously, the best LPDDR5 variant was LPDDR5T/5X-9600. But now we have Samsung's LPDDR5X-10700!

Edit: The article does mention it is coming to PCs;
The new LPDDR5X is the optimal solution for future on-device applications and is expected to expand adoption into PCs, accelerators, servers and automobiles

It seems extra silly when you consider newer BT standards allow relatively speedy personal hotspot connections. I'm getting my money's worth for that 30 bucks a month! Terabytes go by quickly even at 15Mbps.

The external display specs seem somewhat underwhelming

Display

Display Processing Unit (DPU) Name: Qualcomm® Adreno™
Maximum On-Device Display Resolution: 4K Ultra HD @ 120 Hz
Maximum External Display Resolution: 4K Ultra HD @ 60 Hz
High Dynamic Range (HDR): HDR10
Number of Concurrent Displays: 3
Interface Type: DisplayPort 1.4

Although at the end of the spec list it says this...

  1. 3 displays up to 4K @ 60Hz HDR10, 1 display up to 5K 60Hz, or up to 4K @ 120Hz (5K, 4K, 4K in concurrency)

So which is it? Anyone know?

More slides from Qualcomm:

Last slide shows the list of native apps.

Edit: Apparently not all of the apps are running native. Here's the article where the slides were sourced from:

And when people really need a 5G connection, they will use tethering with their phones.

And if you're traveling overseas with your laptop and can't tether to your phone due to roaming charges then a dongle for the laptop works perfectly well. Rather than buying a fleet of laptops with cellular it makes much more sense for a company to have a small number of dongles employees traveling overseas with their laptop can check out.

But like I said, Qualcomm is not going to listen to logic they are likely to build cellular into their SoC and try to claim it as an advantage over Intel/AMD laptops.

This has not been the case with the X Elite. The modem is discrete.

Yeah I agree it’s basically no big deal. The only reason anyone would care is battery life hits to the phone and inconvenience, but even in tablets we see this isn’t significant enough to make it a huge deal. I’d bet 90% of iPads sold are WiFi-only.
But like I said, Qualcomm is not going to listen to logic they are likely to build cellular into their SoC and try to claim it as an advantage over Intel/AMD laptops.
It’s not built into the SoCs as I explained.

And they don’t focus on this anymore, they barely mentioned it in the X Elite release as opposed to the CPU efficiency — even Adreno got more mentions and certainly Hexagon & AI did.

They will claim it as an advantage that they have the option, absolutely and some laptops will have it, but looking even at the brunt of the leaked laptops (or again their announcement) so far it’s a marked difference from their past.

Having 5G != pushing it as the one differentiator. They’re not doing that anymore because obviously no one cared, and if they were they wouldn’t have bought Nuvia.

This is pretty great. The Yoga or Slim lineup is a very mainstream among the premium ultrabook laptops and this shows where they’re headed.

Last time it was just a niche small fanless Thinkpad X13S with a crappy display.

The ThinkPad this time is also beefier and clearly targeting business and power users in the 30-45W range which is fantastic to see.

So two laptops from Lenovo and a significant change from the previously niche model.

Not Qualcomm's fault, but the new extrusion of the lid in the upper part was uncalled for. Lenovo had such a clean and clear visual language, they just had to blemish is somehow. (not talking about the lip which serves a purpose, but the extrusion on the backside of the lid)

At first I thought it might be some silly branding branding idea (related to Snapdragon), but I see on the Thinkpad they have the product name there, so it must be Lenovo's idea.

Microsoft's next breakthrough AI feature for Windows - AI Explorer will first debut in Snapdragon X Elite PCs
● Microsoft is working on a major new AI feature for Windows 11, which it plans to unveil during an event on May 20.
● The feature, dubbed AI Explorer internally, will be able to document and organize everything you see on your PC, and turn everything you do into a searchable memory with natural language.
● It looks like AI Explorer will launch first on new Arm PCs, as its system requirements list Qualcomm's new Snapdragon X Elite NPU as a baseline.
● This would omit Intel's new AI PCs from taking advantage of this year's blockbuster AI feature.
This is why Intel/AMD need to to upgrade to a 45-50 TOPS NPU. It looks like Meteor Lake or Hawk Point isn't going to get this.

Hence why Lunar Lake and Strix Point are coming soon after Snap X Elite.

Also, 225GB of Storage for the AI Explorer feature🤣. Yeah, no, thanks! I prefer to have storage ready for my things.

Windows keeps getting worse and worse with these marketing fluff features.

The article says that 16 GB RAM is a minimum requirement for Windows 11 24H2 RTM.

It has been previously leaked that all Snapdragon X Elite PCs will ship with Windows 11 24H2 RTM.

What does this mean?

All Snapdragon X Elite laptops will have a minimum of 16 GB RAM!
