My buddy owns 2 UPS Stores. The rates he charges are the exact same as retail UPS rates (i.e. non-commercial accounts). They do however charge you an ass-load for packing. Back when it was MBE they did rape you on the rates too, but since UPS took over they lowered them.

UPS Stores set their own rates. They are a franchise (after the fashion of Mailboxes Etc), and so the owners can decide their own prices. That said, UPS facilities still have a markup of 30% over the basic rate that they charge companies to ship through them (tier 1 rate). UPS Stores can range from a little below UPS facility rates to twice UPS rates.

IIRC UPS Stores are just renamed mailboxes etc stores.

I don't believe that is correct any longer. Since the switchover to The UPS Store, shipping rates are as quoted by UPS. As a matter of fact I usually print my own labels and just drop them off at one of my local UPS Stores.
You can even check rates over the web:

All I can say is that the UPS Store I use does not charge different rates...YMMV i suppose
I just did it and the rates are the same on both the UPS site and the UPS Store site. Make sure both sites have residential delivery checked or unchecked. Also, make sure you have the UPS Customer Counter (instead of Dropoff) option selected on the UPS site.Originally posted by: RagingBITCH

Like I said before - they DO CHARGE DIFFERENT RATES. I just tried calculating the cost on a 15lb package from Carrollton, TX - 75007 to Germantown, TN - 38138. 15lb box, 12x9x12 dimensions. Go onto UPS' site and check the cost there. I got different rates. Tried 3 different other weights and dimensions - all different still.
I've shipped for UPS for Staples and at my last company. At the two The UPS Stores I've been to, they have charged differently. I think what he said about them setting their own rates is true if you guys say otherwise.
