this one if for @Muse i know he's old AF so maybe he saw it on reruns when he was young.

I watched the 1953 (!) film Julius Caesar - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0045943/reference/

with Marlon "I also did Apocalypse Now" Brando, in a absolutely smashing role as Mark Anthony, for MGM's adaptation of Shakespeare's play of the same name.

I will hold my vote for now, but i am leaning on 9/10. I could never understand why Brando was considered the world's greatest actor until now, he fucking rocks Shakespeare.
It can evidently be seen here for free:

Several big stars.

Funny thing is my data says Brando's greatest role was in On the Waterfront. So, I watched that 3 days ago. Rob Reiner said this in an article in February:

Marlon Brando in ‘On the Waterfront’
That to me is the greatest single performance in American cinema. To this day I don’t know that there’s as good a performance as that. I love Elia Kazan’s body of work. He did “A Face in the Crowd,” “Viva Zapata!” and “A Streetcar Named Desire” — all these wonderful films. But Brando gives the ultimate performance.

Quite honestly I was largely unimpressed with it. I don't often like a movie made before the 1960's. There are exceptions. I am a Bogart fan, by and large.

The only performance in On the Waterfront I liked, and I thought it was pretty stupendous was the arch villain, Johnny Friendly played by Lee J. Cobb. He knocked it out of the park. To me, Brando was so so at best.

The Bricklayer starring Aaron Eckhart. Normal spy intrigue movie. My only complaint is Aaron used an I’m Batman husky voice. I don’t think it is his normal voice.

Fallout tv show 8/10
the production quality is very good but i have some issues with the writing. Jonathan Nolan learned from the mistakes of Westworld about muddled interactions, but the show takes forever before it actually starts developing a clear arc of the main characters. it took until episode 4 before i found something interesting in the narrative, until then they rely too heavily on worldbuilding lore and prop callouts. it took until ep 7,8 before i had any buy in, mostly because they finally had to start revealing the big stuff.

the actors are great and the story points they are setting up seem promising, but i wouldnt call it great yet. hats off to Goggins.

Killing Eve 7/10

British spy series on Netflix. Been binge watching this one, pretty cool. Not quite Atomic Blonde but checks some of the same boxes. A little different than the usual female spy/assasin stories in that there is an odd obsession in this cat and mouse game . Love the soundtrack.

Gritty is the word I would use to describe the atmosphere of this movie. Totally off the rockers bonkers story.

I think Digdog may like it. Might be a 7 for him.

My score 5.9/10. Not giving it 6 coz it had hard to watch scenes.

i watched Me Before You - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2674426/reference/

(because i was on the plane back to stabbyland)

And it's the SAME story as every story that involves anyone in a wheelchair. Emilia Clarke plays the Lou, quirky and naive village girl who needs to assist quadraplegic hunk millionaire playboy genius Will (because every decent love story needs a rich handsome boy, poor people don't deserve love), and through her she once again finds Beauty In Life(tm). kinda.
And she too through him finds the Hidden Joy Of Being Rich(tm).

Frankly Intouchables was better, but Clarke carries the film on her shoulders eyebrows. Decent chick flick. Costumes are surprisingly good (the main character has a penchant for dressing in these horribly gaudy clothes), everything else was barebones.

6.5/10

Monarch: Legacy of Monsters - Apple TV+ - 8/10

This so much better than I was expecting. I'm fuzzy on some of the *ahem*, "physics," but it lays a very good platform for the recently released Godzilla movie. There IS some, let's call it "friction" between the two, but for something to watch while munching on your bleu cheese encrusted fries, it's quite watchable. BTW, bleu cheese on fries isn't poutine, but still quite good.

The show is pretty clearly teen oriented so you have the expected amount of drama, but they dress it up well. And one of the stars is Anna Sawai (Mariko in Shogun) - great body of which you see precious little.

It also stars Kurt Russel. The CGI presents some very yummy eye candy. I watched it pretty much straight through which for me, currently, is quite something.

i watched Love Lies Bleeding - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt19637052/reference/

LGBT film about a girl who has a really shit relationship with everyone around her.

Kirsten Stewart is Lou, lesbian who works in a gym. She has a estranged father who owns a gun range, and has a side-gig as criminal. Mind you, everyone in the script is garbage.
She meets Jackie, muscular lesbo bodybuilder. Jackie is a vagrant, and she'll do anything to survive, which includes fucking Lou, but also fucking Lou's brother in law.
The core of the plot is that Lou cannot trust if Jackie is fucking her because she likes her, or just to crash at her gym for free.
Eventually the horrible people in the rest of the cast do horrible things, which makes Jackie go HULK SMASH (including a literal transformation into She-Hulk) and beat the shit out of all the "bad guys", which convinces Lou that it's true love.

Ok so .. it's not terrible .. it's well acted (Kristen does a good job as the emotional lesbian, but doesnt get many points given that she actually *is* a lesbian), decently shot, decently directed and well paced.

.. but it's SO predictable. it's so fucking predictable. Yeah ok it's not bad, but it's got absolutely nothing original, not a single scene. And frankly my tolerance for LGBT films involving women is not a lot higher than those involving men - it's just not a set of emotions that resonates with me.

6/10 for the target audience. for people just looking for entertainment, look elsewhere.

Sand Land The Series 8/10 One of the last projects by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame. It is a good telling of the manga, with a new story thrown in.

Little Richard: I Am Everything (2023) 8/10

Told I would really like this, now, a few days before my HBOMAX Ultimate expires, I watched it. Sensational performer and person. It's a documentary, of course, and by a woman, evidently in conjunction with CNN and Rolling Stone Magazine. Lots of footage and interviews. I figure to rewatch it tomorrow. This guy was way more exciting than Elvis. One of a kind.

i watched Shin Godzilla - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4262980/reference/

which is a straight reboot of the original film by TOHO.

In japanese with pretty bad subs.

There's not much of a plot. Godzilla emerges from Tokyo bay, and slowly proceeds towards Tokyo, intent of casually destroying everything in its path.
A major point of the script is the convoluted bureaucracy of Japan that makes it impossible to authorize any kind of emergency action, without first consulting dozens of ministers.
As the attack proceeds, Godzilla mutates and becomes stronger (there's 4 different models of Godzilla in the film, with each new one being closer to the original). More and more weapons are activated and finally in a barrage of missiles the monster dies.

On one hand, the film shows that you can actually do nice stuff with CGI if you are smart. The effects are not fantastic, but they are consistent and well used, to the point where a considerable suspension of disbelief takes hold. The destruction is quite spectacular (nothing like Deepwater Horizon, if you wanna see a disaster movie), as are some Godzilla scenes, in particular the signature Atomic Breath.
But the film is also too long, and the "oh lol Japan government so bad" shtick can't really carry the film for nearly 2 hours.

Wouldn't recommend if not for fans of the IP.

6/10 - it's just a Godzilla movie.

Started watching "Extant" a couple of nights ago. For the most part, things are very predictable...and since it's only 2 seasons, I suspect it's going to end before things are fully resolved. It's not...terrible...but it's not great. I'll keep watching for now. (just finished S1, ep8)

Finally watched Barbie last night. 9/10

Last summer, when Barbie was fighting it out with Oppenheimer for mega-hit-of-the-summer honors, I booked Oppy in August at one of the few cinema theaters that provided the ultimate experience (it was in San Francisco). I posted here about that. Such different movies!

Barbie is quite something. I didn't have much of an idea of what to expect, practically nothing, which is the way I prefer to come into a movie experience. I think Barbie was cast perfectly. I mean the lead role! The other casting was really good (I wondered about Gosling, been a fan since Drive, but he was showing his age here I thought). I like the multi-racial aspect, the idea that diversity is embraced. I haven't researched it yet, don't know what the criticism is like, I will.

I was surprised they portrayed Ruth Handler! That was cool. I went to school with Ken Handler, folks! We were in the same grade school class at Castle Heights Elementary School in West Los Angeles. Last time I saw him was a chance encounter in the parking lot of a well known diner in Westwood, near UCLA and this was before disco was invented! We were in our 20's. I have to wonder if Barbara Handler is alive (Edit: evidently, she is). Ken died IIRC in the 1990's from a brain tumor.

Agree with that though you scored the movie too high. Maybe you really wanted to see something lighthearted I guess. I think Gosling as Ken was appalling. I didn't like that the movie punished men for being men. Ken didn't even get a proper french kiss!

Women seem to forget that men being the way they are, have created the world around them in which they live comfortably and are able to shop till they drop. Who built the factories, the inventions that streamlined everything and the malls and supermarkets? Which majority gender in the military is willing to lay down their life for their country? It's funny when women mock the very shadow under which they enjoy their relatively carefree lives. Yes, there are plenty of bad men in the world who do horrible things to women but punishing all men for the actions of a few by making a complete mockery of human males in a movie about a stupid doll is just too much. This is only going to teach young girls that men are nothing but glorified servants for them and they can mess with their heads all they want coz men are so desperate for feminine beauty that they will put up with just about anything.

Sorry, had to vent.

Wow you just took me back to the Middle ages. Thanks!

Picture me as angry as the Colonel in "A Few Good Men".

I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it! I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a *damn* what you think you are entitled to!

OK, maybe not. I'm too old to care THAT much

But I do feel humanity is going to become like cockroaches in the distant future where women start birthing other women without fertilization and men become a speck, on the run for their lives and hiding in fear. If I get re-incarnated in that age, I hope I'm not one of the cruel women who hunt men.

The War of the Sexes, if occurred to me mid-way through Barbie, is taken up, but there was humor. After all, playing with dolls is about fantasy, so anything you see in the movie, it should be understood that it's indulgent to a teen or pre-teen's imagination, and obviously it takes the extraordinary perspective of being from a female point of view. You HAVE to grant it that. There's a lot to this movie, more than I got out of it, I knew that early on. They tackle a lot of stuff. I'm withholding judgement other than to say (I did) that it's really something. Don't take my rating too seriously. The thread asks for a rating. If you boil down a fine whiskey dry and weigh the solids, what does that tell you about its quality?
