A dear friend of mine just closed on a house. He's out of state.

I want to get something nice for them. Maybe a decor or something that lasts preferably.

Must be shipped.

Ideas?

Nice plant or small kitchen appliance are the usual go tos for me for a friend. For my stepson I plan on getting him a cordless drill/circular saw combo. That boy's gonna learn...

I usually get a gift certificate to a Good food place near their new house. Between moving and unpacking and all that work to do getting a nice meal out or takeout and learning a little more about your neighborhood is to me a nice thing. Just takes a little something off your plate while you're doing all that work.

Gift card to a home decor place?
Is there anything they're into like grilling, cooking, alcohol, spices?
Really nice blanket or towel set?

If a cat's out, get some lily of the valley for outside. Right now is when it blooms, and it'll last virtually forever. It'll bloom every year for their purchase anniversary.

edit:
assuming he didn't do something ridiculous and buy in TX. I was thinking NJ when I posted, and forgot he's out of state. If the weather's drastically different than mid Atlantic, look it up online to make sure it'll survive. Or go with the cat...

I would steer clear of a house warming gift geared towards just one person in the family. Tools are a great idea but your friends wife may not appreciate them as much as him. I also think that a plant or a cat isn't the best idea either. It's just one more thing for them to worry about in an already stressful situation.

I like @MrSquished idea even though it's a gift card. I've moved a couple of times over the years and what he said in his post is true.

You could always keep it really generic and gift them a cookbook or a Harry and David gift basket. Even if they don't use it they will appreciate the thought.

EDIT: I just realized that Zeze didn't mention in his post whether or not his friend is married.

A bottle of GOOD wine.

- My go to is something consumable, either a gift basket or the liquor of their choice.

I also like the suggestion about a gift card to a local place, but that feels a little riskier if you dont know the quality of the location.

Thanks guys

I haven't made up my mind yet but really good ideas.

Maybe a plunger as a joke + $GC to a local restaurant

perhaps something that is practical:

a nice crock pot could be a great gift if they don't already have one.

Kitchen stuff is always a nice goto. I find things that one will have for a long time always makes for a good house warming gift, as it's something they will enjoy for a long time. When they use it, there is a memory attached to it as they know they got it when they got their house.
