This is not a major surprise since the focus of Russian combat operations has been in the east for some time. They also probably want to minimize its attractiveness as a target given it is a huge PITA to fix.

Yeah, the Russians have been expanding rail networks. They're also building a rail system right along the coast to supply the southern flank. THETI Mapping on YT! was talking about this a good bit this past week or last week sometime, even had some diagrams drawn up that he'd been piecing together over time. Good forward thinking from the Russian perspective, they know eventually that bridge has high probability of going down.

If Ukraine had been properly supplied in 2022, then the offensive may have landed before Russia dug in and fortified the land bridge.
As things stand, it was too little too late to make a difference. Through our slow trickle approach, the Land bridge is firmly secured by Russia.
Now it's simply a matter of pasting enough Orcs quickly enough that they start to lose cohesion and resolve. Only then will anything turn or look favorable for the West.

We need mass production of weapons on a scale not seen since World War 2.

There had to be a build up period. The Ukrainians, I don't think, were able to take all the west could have given them in 2022 (if we had tried to). The real issue, IMHO, is that some of our congress critters delayed weapons shipments this year. That, and the fact that the west hasn't been producing enough of certain weapons classes need to win a ground war. We (NATO) expect a land/air/sea campaign and have planned accordingly. The UA doesn't have an integrated combined arms strategy. We have, in some ways, limited the capabilities of our weapons systems that we have given to UKR. We have had a sort of 'prove you can use wisely' approach before we up the ante. It's unfortunate - but geopolitics is a serious game.

No really I want to see the Russians attack the one country on their border that has done nothing but think, plan, arm, and prepare for exactly this kind of aggression since the end of WW2. If possible could they please do so during the winter.

In case anyone BSs around why Finland joined NATO.
Russia makes its intentions... obvious.
Russia intends to kill ALL its neighbors, and this still holds true to this day.

Russian propagandist Solovyev: "I've always felt that Finland wanted to go back to the Russian Empire."

To be fair they seem to be fine with only killing a lot of their neighbors and just subjugating the remainder like after WW2. But yes, the people running Russia believe it must be a great power and you show you're a great power by conquering your neighbors. They will never stop.

I think people sometimes look back at the 10 years or so after the Cold War ended where there were thoughts/hopes Russia might turn away from that path but I think in retrospect it was just that Russia was too weak to do anything. As soon as they rebuilt some they went right back to attacking their neighbors.

Centuries of this kind of behavior only briefly punctuated by pauses due to internal political/economic problems. System of government irrelevant, return to form inevitable.

UK gives Ukraine green light to use British weapons inside Russia

"Ukraine can use British-supplied weapons to strike targets inside Russia, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron stated during a May 2 visit to Kyiv. “Ukraine has that right,” Cameron told Reuters. “Just as Russia is striking inside Ukraine, you can quite understand why Ukraine feels the need to make sure it’s defending itself.”"

^^^ Yesssss! You can tell which country had it's homeland bombed by fascist totalitarians in WWll.

This. Fight them now (by proxy) rather than fight them later. Britain learned its lesson. After 20 years of war, we are a bit gun shy. We (the US) also have a slight possibility of causing Moscow to escalate by our involvement, but, politics.

I think I heard the shooter was originally from Ukraine, maybe a sleeper? Or just piss drunk with a grudge? Who knows. Maybe he was sick of living with criminals and those that dabble in cannibalism.

Supposedly guy waited until they were asleep, then gave each sleeper a blast center mass. If that's true they were probably drunk (not hard to believe). Shooting a rifle with a suppressor, in a room or bunker no less, still makes a lot of noise. I can see guys waking up.

Regardless, may that guy make it to surrender to the AFU, live to kill more orcs one day.👍 Russians can redeem themselves by killing other Russians far as I'm concerned.

France, Hungary, Slovakia, Greece, Cyprus and Malta sent representatives to Putin's inauguration as President.

Absent are other major Western powers attending. But you got France. I guess that will have to do. They're good with it.

Speaking of France:

Macron, with Xi nearby, evidently felt compelled enough to offer this gem, "we are not at war with Russia or the Russian people, and we have no desire for regime change in Moscow."

Not surprising, yeah just France trying to be consistent for show. The rest is Viktor Orban, places with cultural ties to Russia, and Cyprus - which is largely controlled by Russian interests. Meh. Xi's visit was even more limited and lame. The US and the bulk of the EU still have no issue declining to play pretend wrt Russian "democracy." The French are used to dealing with brutal tyrants in Africa, I don't think their attendance automagically confers legitimacy, just that they still want to talk. It's Macron after all, Monsieur Communique. Sure he'll be the guy who talks to the people conducting genocides.

No one really believes an election means anything when one candidate makes all the other candidates die, get declared ineligible, go to prison, or flee into exile. People stuck in an authoritarian police state run by a butthurt dictator might say otherwise though, especially when the state controls what people are allowed to say in public with stiff penalties.

Putin just seems to continually lie to Macron. Told him he wouldn't kill Zelenskyy, but they're still trying. I think Macron is telling those authoritarian twats what they want to hear, while he has no intention of halting his assistance to Ukraine. No declaration of war, not interested in doing regime change, sure - none of that affects French support for Ukraine by way of lethal aid. Will it keep the Foreign Legion out of Ukraine? Maybe, I guess we'll find out soonish.

But the guy who orchestrates elections in illegally annexed territories at gunpoint doesn't get to be taken seriously when it comes to democracy. Doesn't matter who shows up to his after party.

The only thing surprising to me was that Shoigu wasn't there.

Apparently the Russians can now equip some sort of module onto those FAB bombs that allow them to move around in the air (versus straight forward and slightly down, lol.) To the left, right, and even more down I would imagine -- I cannot confirm that however. Not cool for those to have their versatility increased, nonetheless. Noticed the Aussie (Willy OAM) bring up this report at approx 16:20-30-ish in this video.

I mean this is functionally true for basically everybody. We don't want regime change in Russia, that's up to the Russians. We want the Russians to just stay in Russia.
