I don't dislike the pick but man, that's an investment for something we potentially could've gotten in 2 or 3. Kinda just adds fuel to the trade talks. Apparently Deebo' AND/OR Aiyuk are on the trade block now for sure according to armchair GMs lol.
I don't see them making a trade now that the 1st round is finished. I'm good with them trading Deebo, but don't want them trading BA.

Obviously they want to move Deebo and his large cap hit as a rusher/receiver. They'll pay Aiyuk but the price has shot up dramatically the past few days for a #1 WR.

I know draft grades are dumb but jeez Louise there are some websites giving the Commanders and Patriots B's for drafting Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye. Who else were they supposed to draft at #2 and #3?

Seriously. It's so dumb. This is why I liked The Athletic, but can't give them any of my money due to being part of the NYT, which, it has been revealed, are attacking Biden because their publisher is pissed Biden won't give them an interview and has directed them to do this as retribution. So Biden gave Howard Stern an interview instead.

But the Athletic gave the correct grades, as you point out above. Though they were too easy on Atlanta.

I really liked the Chiefs draft, but it doesn't really mean much, time will tell how well they actually did.

Falcons gave Kirko 4 years and 100 million guaranteed and then go ahead and draft a qb at 8, lmfao

I actually don't have an issue with them drafting a QB, I just question them drafting that player at that spot as it seems likely they could have gotten him later. Maybe they tried to trade down, and maybe they heard that another team was interested (Broncos got a QB after them) and were worried they'd lose their opportunity.

Also, I'm baffled at people's reactions, and possibly Cousins most of all. He's surprised? Like, did he forget he was drafted to be a backup, then his own team didn't view him as a long term QB, and immediately on his new team (and for the entire time he was there) everyone said "he's not the guy that will get you a ring"? For him to act surprised, considering his age and recent injury history (I believe he played with some fractured ribs the year before), is just absurd. The falcons probably felt somewhat desperate and I have a hunch they think they might need an alternative QB sooner than later. I think Penix had more experience (and recent big game experience) than other options available at that point.

And I think the top QBs are much more of a crapshoot than they've been made out to be, so I don't think whatever they would've had to give up to try and move up to get one of them would've been worth it, and I don't know how much chance they would've had anyway. Teams clearly see value of drafting QBs and not making mistakes of past (so many teams claimed they wanted Mahomes but thought he'd fall to them - although that seems pretty revisionist so they don't look like dumb shits; but Rodgers' slide, and Josh Allen, Russell Wilson, Jordan Love, Dak Prescott, Jalen Hurts, Llamar Jackson all either had serious questions and/or drafted much later than their play ended up warranting) where teams are seeing how much of the prospect shit is often wrong and its better to take a chance than not. I think the Falcons looked at the Chiefs and Packers and see an opportunity to try to follow that path.

I think they have to publicly say they plan to sit him (which sitting him would be a smart move and very well could be their plan or their hopeful plan), but I think it shows they have concerns about Cousins (which are valid - people keep bringing up the contract, but Cousins is old enough that age alone should start being a concern, then the injury last year). Further, that these people are the same ones that consistently say Cousins isn't your guy, then so should the Falcons basically just write off 4 years? Or even 2? Hell most of the articles I see pretty much say Cousins will help them make the playoffs but pretty much don't give any chance to him doing much more than that and that its to not let a young talented team languish while they find their actual franchise QB.

for me it's the combination of handing Cousins that contract and drafting his replacement that high in this draft, it could work out brilliantly though, drafts are a gamble

If it's the QB you want, you get him, sunk costs be damned. Asset acquisition is a carpicious, probablity-based exercise in the NFL. And the probabilities are more that you WON'T have a QB than you will.

And since NFL teams are clearly not constrained by budget, sunk costs are totally ignorable.

And there's a legal reason to pay Cousins anyway. So that the laborer can't complain via the union that he did all that production and got a below market deal.

Players have a shelf life. Cousins is 35 and blew his Achilles. Him lasting to 40, can't say never but you can't say he's a sure thing to make it when most of his peers did not and he was never on a Brady or Rodgers level to being with.

I think the Falcons giving Cousins such a big contract and then drafting his replacement in this draft is what makes it a puzzling decision.

If you were going to draft a young QB this year, don't sign a vet to more than two years tops.

If you were going to sign a vet to a longer multi-year contract, don't draft a young QB this year. Maybe next year, or even the year after, but not this year.

If you didn't trust Cousin's long term, long term being 3+ years in the NFL, then why sign him to a long term contract? All the Falcons did is made Capt. Kirk a lame duck QB in the very first year they signed him. And don't forget that if Kirk doesn't work out, his huge contract is an albatross that handicaps the Falcons for a few more years. The money could have been used to sign other players that will help the Falcons going forward. Not be an anchor around their neck.

If you did trust Cousin's long term, then drafting a young QB is a waste of a pick that could have potentially been used to improve the team to make a real Super Bowl push this year or next.

Or they didn't expect Penix to drop and had to take him.

Too many men is better than have no man at all. And Kirk is the equivalent of no man. They'll find a way around it. Cap inflation and the like makes even the worst of contracts a mere accounting game.

It's a QB league, and if you have a chance to take a QB who you believe will be a franchise guy for you and you don't already have one, take him.

I don't watch much college football, so I only saw Penix play in the national championship game, and I wasn't particularly impressed.

to me it's pretty obvious that you don't draft a fucking loser like Dake Mayye anywhere, so not sure why they graded NE that high.

I'm just glad that Washington wasn't that blindingly stupid.

Having a multi-prong solution is valid for some industries and in some cases. Now, I haven't even paid attention to the details of Cousin's contract, so maybe there's a team friendly out after the 2nd year. I don't know. If that's the case, then drafting a young QB as a secondary option certainly makes sense.

Also, just to play devil's advocate, one can argue that having too many chefs in the kitchen is a bad thing. Time will tell. And us armchair GM's will keep on speculating.

I haven't checked the specifics, but Cousins got $100M guaranteed. Which tells me the Falcons could cut bait (and eat a dead cap hit) in about 2 years. The subsequent years on the deal may not play out.

They may have wasted a bit of draft capital on him at #8, but I don't think it was that much of a reach compared to mock drafts. Nobody questions Penix's production; they do wonder about his injury history and his age. It should be easier for a team to trade up than to trade down; you target a certain pick and you offer up substantial draft capital to move up. In the Falcons case, what could they have done? They offered a swap with whoever had #11 + a little compensation? But do the Vikings take Penix or McCarthy at #10?

Cousins was playing at an MVP level last season before the Achilles tear. Having said that, I've never considered him "that guy" so what the Falcons did isn't insane. I think the cherry on top was they didn't even bother to tell Cousins as a courtesy that they're drafting a QB. But Cousins isn't a snowflake like Kaaron Rodgers, so there's that.

Drafting QBs has always been a crap shoot; I don't watch CFB but also have no idea which of these top 6 QBs will become a franchise QB. Everyone is raving about Caleb Williams, but the Oklahoma Sooners alone have had 3 Heisman winners in the past 16 years go #1 overall. The most hyped was Sam Bradford and he was a bust. Baker Mayfield is a solid starter, and Kyler Murray is trending in the wrong direction. I honestly don't know anything about Jayden Daniels except he won the Heisman, but he looks like a basketball player.

Overall, I like the Eagle's picks. With many positions of need, I kind of feel like they mostly made the right moves.

Defensive backfield should be vastly improved with an infusion of new talent. Two new CB's.

Edge rusher pick of Jalyx Hunt seems questionable though.

They drafted some interior offensive linemen depth. Not sexy picks, but the Eagle's O-line is aging. Jason Kelce (center) is gone. We'll see if Cam Jurgens can replace Kelce. Lane Johnson (right tackle) probably only has one or two good years left. They need to look at his successor in next year's draft. Left tackle is fine with Jordan Mailata.

Jalen Hurts needs to prove the SB year wasn't a fluke. He wasn't terrible last year. He didn't play bad. But he also didn't elevate the team when they needed it. He was just a guy.

Tyler Boyd to the Titans
They have a pretty solid WR room now for the 2nd year QB.

Chiefs better be glad that the world has changed and there's so much other stuff to focus on. If its not the dumbass wide receiver, now their fucking place kicker is giving college commencement speeches telling women to get back in the kitchen and get a bun in the oven cause that's the only way they can be truly happy. Also gays are an affront to God, and well, he doesn't seem to remember who was leader during COVID since its pretty obvious he's trying to wade into the right wing culture war angle but said COVID was a failure of leadership. But somehow so is IVF and surrogacy both of which are affronts to God and "degenerate" or something? Since he's the kicker I don't think it can be explained with CTE, so I'm gonna guess brain worms?

Schedule dropped recently: https://www.nfl.com/schedules/team-schedules

I don't see very many "easy" games this year for the 9ers except maybe:

Wk 4 vs Patriots
Wk 10 @ Buccaneers
Wk 14 vs Bears

Even wk 2 @ Vikings is a toss-up because Darnold knows the system really well and can point out flaws in the D and he knows some things about the O.

Wk 3-8 is their gauntlet IMO with:

Rams
Patriots
Cards
Seahawks
Chiefs
Dallas

Wk 12 vs GB & 13 @ Bills should be good games and then another mini gauntlet with:
Rams
Dolphins
Lions
Cards

Obviously division games are always tough but I feel like we always struggle with the Cards. Lord Helmet just runs too well against us.
