Has the Macbook Pro (Mid 2009) problems with SSDs?

I went with a OWC Mercury Extreme Pro 240GB SSD back when they came out.... end of May and have been extremely happy with it. No issues after awake from sleep and performance is great. I spend a lot of time inside VMs and there's a huge performance boost there. But I have a late 2008 MBP.

should be good, you need capacity mostly, and since its not going to be for daily use, ie lots of random writes so it won't matter. get what'll fit your size needs.

it shouldn't, raid 0 and 1 are pretty basic, so there's nothing fancy needed on the stardom controller, and since the random read of both drives isn't going to exceed 300MBs anyways it'll be fine. Sequential reads and writes are going to be capped at 300MBs (a little under for various reasons)...

One vertex2 drive is close to maxing out sata 3gb/s, so two drives in a raid 0 should do it no problem. But since you're looking for low latency/fast random reads I doubt it'll be pulling 300MB/s constantly. Just a wild guess... 300 tracks * 64KB (audio sample size per second) = 19.2MB/s...

You can just use Disk Utility to format the drive. OS X doesn't have alignment issues with SSDs like XP does, actually neither does vista or win7. Any SATA SSD should show up as a standard SATA drive and for your needs honestly anything big enough with fast random reads should work fine. You...

This is just funny

wow that painful..... imagine how long it'll take to rebuild or expand it! hmmm..... if I did my math right thats 16.4Mb/s. Makes me wonder what kind of verification process format is using or if the raid controller doesn't like sequential writes. --update-- Did some searching.... and didn't...

Intel raid: ICH10R and adding drives to a raid 5

Usually you can grow a raid 5 array when adding drives. But with 2tb drives I'd go raid 6, but it doesn't seem to be an option on the ICH10R, I'm trying to verify that. Since you're going for 5 year life span as opposed to max performance, raid 6 with a battery backed cache is a much much safer...

Is a Drobo the way to go?

So far I like mine, just a regular Drobo 2nd gen, and over firewire800 its plenty fast enough for backups and media storage, but that's all I do with it. Having had to upgrade and move all my music/tv shows/movies twice already I really wasn't comfortable not having at least mirroring and...

WooHoo!! 400GB OWC SSD

Ok, scratch the 400gb there's a OWC 240gb thats big enough to replace my 250gb HDD and doesn't hurt nearly as bad price wise. We'll see how the 7% over provisioning does, but it sounds like sandforce's controller logic might be performing better than they were originally planning if they can...

Easiest, least head-achey way to replace 1 disk out of 3 in raid 0

ghosting is probably the easiest/only solution, a bit time consuming, but there's not really anything else to be done to a failing raid 0. And keep your fingers crossed it doesn't fail during the ghost, depending on how far gone that drive is.

according to http://www.intel.com/products/server/raid/index.htm#raidintegrated all their server based raid is x4 or x8 depending on the card, looks good to me. I'm just used to getting separate raid cards when needing raid 5.

Its the enclosure, you put your own drives in it. ;) I think its the PD2500 that you'd want, dip switch or jumper to configure for raid 0 or 1.

It used to be cylinders * heads * sectors * 512 bytes (usually) = drive size, and you'd have to configure this in your bios (C/H/S), I didn't code any disk level stuff then, but I believe the OS had to know about this or at least the PATA driver, I'd have to lookup the FAT16 specs but if I had...

I'm betting less stress and wobble of the platters so it can hit 15K rpms. Its a shame too, the transfer rates on a full 3.5 platter at 15k rpms would be great. But I've always been amazed at the magnets they put in there.

Since I spend 80% of my time in vmware fusion this would be a HUGE win for me, I'm generally not cpu bound at all. I wish they'd come out with a 300gig model, I just need more than 200 since I've got ~130 gigs of VMs and the lower cost would be nice. The most I've ever paid for a HD was ~$800...

for $40, sure will. Your HD is the slowest part of your system, well unless you spend all day working with thumb drives, but it should be a noticeable change.

I have been eagerly awaiting a larger sandforce SSD and by chance decided to see if there was any changes to the OWC Mercury Extreme today. 400GB model is a very welcome surprise, not a big fan of the price, but finally something that fits my needs...

How much faster is four HDs compaired to two?

Stick with raid 10 or 6, but forget raid 5. Seeing a second drive fail while rebuilding the array is a horrible horrible experience. But you'll get better performance with raid 10.

I was thinking empty single drive enclosures, nothing special, just stackable. Without extra expansion slots though you'd end up having to go iSCSI if you're storage needs outpace SSD drive size improvements. And then it just gets expensive, I'd suggest a drobo elite, but they're saying no SSD...

possible external setup, this would take some effort to setup, but would give you a lot of flexibility, ah.... something to grow into if/when you outgrow a single SSD. I'm not sure how the samples are stored, one central hierarchy/one folder per dvd/etc... Figure out which way you'd want, or...

How much ram do you have? You should be able to put some crazy amounts in that macpro. I'm curious how big your projects are, and is the bottleneck during playback or editing? couple options: HDD wise you'd need a bunch of drives, like a 10-20 drive raid setup to get near random SSD...
