The [s]rent[/s] GPU prices are too damn high!

my old card died finally, so I picked up a rx 570 8GB, as it was affordable ($119 after rebate) and faster than my old card. I didn't think it was worth $60-80 more for a rx 590, when I'd prefer a 200-250 RDNA based card. I'll wait until small NAVI comes out, this should be fine for my limited...

Cool, haven't herad about fork sheets yet. I do think they'll get GAA to work, but not sure how many people will use it. I can see a 3nm++++ process, which are only minor tweeks for CPUs. So if you like Intel's architecture lasting years, get ready for the future. Then maybe years down the line...

Here's a new article posted on 5nm and potential 3nm. Seems 5 will be done, though 3nm can probably be done too, though the big question is how many customers will there be for 3nm if costs to develop a chip are 500m -1.5b https://semiengineering.com/5nm-vs-3nm/

Design changes in Zen 2 (CPU/core/chiplet only)

I think the chiplet design is a great move and it's about time it finally happened. I think they could eventually go FD SOI for that I/O uncore portion or use FD SOI for a DRAM chip, phase memory or other large cache on chip or even on the I/O die. This would work especially well if GF ever...

Discussion Com'on AMD, bring us a Vega II Nano

Running the MI60 at MI25 frequency looks liek it will save a bunch of power, as the curve for power increase hasn't yet gone exponential yet. How much is saved is unknown. Though AMD could use a killer low power micro card that performs well

Is 7nm the practical limit?

years ago I recall seeing this but we were at 28nm, and maybe intel just was ramping 22nm. IIRC, I thought around 10nm was the limit, around 50 silicon atoms wide between features. This would be about a 7nm node from Samsung or TMSC, 10nm for intel. I think a 5nm technology is getting close to...

[Anandtech]: GlobalFoundries Stops All 7nm Development !!

Node nomenclature doesn't exactly equal the actual size of transistors. However, I think if at each node drop half of the designs don't move to that process, overall revenues drop raising the cost for everybody that does move to the node. Hopefully the costs to produce the node drop...

I don't see many people's problem. We never expected 7700k performance. Going from Excavator to this is a HUGE jump, more than I expected from AMD. Their MT pe4rformance is great and was expected since they are aiming for workstation/server. This was never going to be a top of the line choice...

Got my first "real" job outside of academia in a small biotech. Only reason I got in was through a connection and I bust my ass during my PhD and post-doc getting many papers out. Still underpaid a bit but in a hot field where I had little experience so it's worth the trade off, as I hope to be...

What does your next CPU need to deliver for you to upgrade to it?

Being on a 2500k, and my daily use of it, I really don't see any need to upgrade until I start gaming again (not likely), or I get tired of my features on my motherboard, ie. needed a better interface for SSD upgrades. I would probably be tempted with an edram L4 cache or some other upcoming...

16 vs 32 gbs of ram

128GB minimum. It'll scream....of course it depends on what you do. RNA-seq analysis likes memory and fast CPUs and many cores. But for surfing the web 128GB is overkill

I wish AMD just licensed IBM's cache system from the power8 and placed it on Zen. Looks like the Power8 does a really good job from the anandtech article.

single core to dual core makes a huge difference. Plus a SSD gives you the large leap in perceived performance (and actually approximatelyy equivalent performance in ST)

CentOS RAID5 rebuild

I was able to find the original receipt and called the company, they weren't too much of a help, couldn't tell me the configuration. Math said it had a hot spare. (4) 1TB drives, only 2TB space, RAID 5 = 3 drives, 1 spare. The raid was rebuilding on the spare when i rebooted. I let it finish...

Hell has frozen over, Fudzilla Both Microsoft and Intel trying to acquire AMD

I doubt iGPUs will ever catch up due to sharing thermal headroom with the CPU. You won't be able to push high FPS with anything that has much CPU overhead before thermal limits are reached. That is unless they start making 125W rated CP/GPUs again. I am waiting for the hot water cooled stuff...
