Poll: Do you care about ray tracing / upscaling?

I don't know??? Ray tracing seems to really help the water in RTX Quake but i don't know how to disable RT specifically in Quake. I disabled "reflections" which made the water look terrible. CP77 looks pretty darn good without RT. RT can specifically be switched off in CP77. I like the idea...

New to owning a Laptop...questions about gaming on one.

Back in the middle of covid we had 3 people working from home on laptops and 1 kid doing virtual school at home on a laptop so I bought a spare, this one: MSI GF63 Thin Gaming Laptop, 15.6" FHD Display, Intel Core i5-10300H, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 MaxQ, 8GB DDR4, 256GB NVMe SSD, Black, Windows...

We are going to need your budget to make better targeted suggestions. The better performance the more you lose portability and battery life. I once bought a gaming monster claiming I didn't care about the extra weight but between the oversized laptop and the huge power brick it was a bit...

I agree that it is like an automobile review where they only drive a SuperCar the speed limit, however it does simplify the review process and make things "fair" in a way. There are so many "knobs" to twist that could skew results. Just look at this thread, we don't even know where the line is...

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

I got a really smart buddy who swears by it. He talks about reflections in mirrors, windows and water really helping him to play a game. Like he can see around corners and get the jump on the enemy. RTX Quake certainly looks better but I don't know how much of that has to do with RT. Don't...

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

A buddy of mine had me run CyberPunk with ray tracing off and it looked amazingly good. Many of the things I had been attributing to the ray tracing looked nearly as good with it off. Shadows and reflections were there and looked fine. No way I'd notice the difference during active gameplay.

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

Oh man I love FC1 and 2. FC2 has a real starfield at night, not just random stars. When we got the new cards with the raytracing I played RTX Quake which is just Quake but with better textures and raytracing. Looks tons better, especially the water.

Question It works but what the heck is going on?

This sort of thing came up on another thread. Someone was complaining that most motherboards lack the ability to switch individual HD/SSD ports on/off in the BIOS. This brought up the question why anyone would want to do such a thing and the answer was basically to prevent Windows from...

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

Our GPU with by far the most hours on it was my son's GTX 1050Ti mobile. It served him well for years until they updated BeamNG enough that he couldn't run the some of the bigger maps, especially with traffic. He is now running a desktop with an RTX 4070 which on paper is many times better...

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

I get that. How are you coming on other parts/software? The CPU is only one piece and I would argue less important than the GPU for gaming. I had good luck with Kinguin for cheap Windows OS. Maybe a used 1660ti @ $100 or so for video? My laptop has a 1660ti mobile and for years it was the...

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

Handbrake is said to make good use of 6 cores with diminishing returns on additional cores. Unfortunately this is not a hard cutoff and helps us only a little because more cores do help, just not as much as the first 6.

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

Of course, but your givin CPU budget is $30. You are 3 or 4x over budget. Of course you can do better by spending 3 or 4x as much.

I expect Fury needs 1.35V to do 3200 period. That it can do 16-20-20 makes it "better" than the Value which can only do 22-22-22. For sure. This picture explains what I was talking about regarding the leakage. It is likely that the Fury is faster but less efficient than the Value.
  20. L

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

Wild guess that maybe the Value running 3200 22-22-22 at 1.2 V is slower but less "leaky". I barely remember but I think I recall something about leaky transistors being faster in some cases? Anyhow the Fury Beast seems to need 1.35 V to hit 3200 which (combined with maybe being leaky) might...

Question How would an E5-2690 v2 compare to an E5-2695 v2

Yeah Ivy Bridge was awesome a just a decade or so ago. It is hard for people around here to suggest anything below a certain level. If we are just talking about gaming I've historically preferred narrow and fast to wide and slow (within reason) because some tasks just don't scale well. Please...

Sorry partner, not following. You mentioned one thing and then talk about one or the other not both? Your example talks about lacking an XMP profile but zir_blazer is talking about modules that do have an XMP 3200 profile. I know you were just trying to help but now I'm confused...

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

AT explains that they presume an "average user" isn't going to get into BIOS settings at all so they use whichever profile requires zero user intervention. XMP/EXPO require fiddling around in the BIOS whereas JEDEC should just come up by default. I take this to mean they are not fiddling with...

That is it! Trust has been broken and not just with Intel. Companies with good reputations don't seem to understand how important their reputation is anymore. This absolutely played a role in choosing AMD for our latest build. The Intel chip beat our choice in most benchmarks but the power...

Not really a grudge as much as an interesting story from the past (hopefully). I mean dude's computer burned up, so there is a lesson in there about max performance at the expense of all else. Performance, cost, reliability, and efficiency are all important and it is up to the user to decide...

My current desktop CPU is an AMD but my last desktop CPU was an Intel, chosen for superior efficiency IIRC. Of course this was back when Intel was tick-tocking on the regular and not stuck on the same node for years at a time. Got me one of those fancy Intel fin-FETs when they were they were...

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

Until the last few years I'd have blamed the game, drivers, Windows, RAM, the MB or the GPU before considering the CPU. Most of my issues in the distant past were sloved with game patches and driver updates. Looks like Intel = rock solid is no longer the norm. Way to go Boeing er I mean Intel.

Question Do I have to worry about frying my CPU?

IDK partner, Intel's power specs have gotten too complicated for me to understand. I find them a little disingenuous to be honest. I went AMD this time in part because of efficiency. We are pushing a 500 watt PS pretty hard, not sure we could pull it off with Intel.

Question Do I have to worry about frying my CPU?

500A The 1st time I ever looked at a pinout for a CPU I was shocked at how many pins were for power. I had assumed that there would be just a few power pins (like the old TTL-DIPs) and that the vast majority of CPU pins were for I/O. It took me a few minutes to realize that with CPUs running...

    The anti-DRM thread

It is super frustrating to buy a game or movie you end up not liking or that does not work well with your system. [5/15/24 - Build Complete] Bow before me I built a new rig. Boy, things have come a long way.

Partpicker over estimates typical power consumption just to be safe, which is good, especially if you plan to really stress your rig. Their estimate was over 400 Watts for our 4070 rig but during regular gaming it only pulls about 270W. Raytracing games add another 50 watts. Our 3080 rig has...

A GPU would not ordinarily be my first guess as a cause for a no start but it certainly can be a cause, especially for your blue screen issues preceeding the no starts. Hey, smell your GPU and see if it smells hot/burned. Got another GPU or a friend with an old card you can borrow? I could...
