Using a Linux distro with MDADM is really the easiest way to go. I’d never consider FreeNAS... For anything really... I mean, you can do everything better by using straight FreeBSD if you want to go the ZFS route.
Linux/MDADM will allow you to use Frankenstein parts and roll your own storage...

What’s with all the price angst? I bought a Monster Voodoo 1 in 1998ish for $350 which comes to ~$530 in today’s dollars with inflation of 2.15%. That is still less than the RTX 2070 MSRP of $499.

I'm not sure what this even means. Existing tax laws are already in place the U.S. and most everywhere else in order to tax crypto mining and trading so there is no reason for them to "crack down" on it.

I think the entire crypto universe is in a bubble right now. At least Ethereum has all the alt tokens riding on its network going for it. Out of all the alt coins, I think Ethereum is probably the best to own. It's just too damn expensive for new guys to get into it at this stage.
