Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

First of all, I said it's a professional card, so it has the cost doubled just because companies will pay it and can write it off as a business expense. They could make a 48 GB 7900 XTX if they really wanted to, but they'd rather sell you a $4,000 W7900 than a $1,500 (or probably less) 7900...

News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

Since both AMD and NVidia seem to be allergic to releasing anything for under $200, Intel could actually gain some market share and good will by making smaller GPUs targeted at the lower end of the market. Even some people who'd normally stick with AMD/NV might grab a low cost Intel card just to...

    Question Speculation: RDNA3 + CDNA2 Architectures Thread

So the rest are bad, but the 7800XT which is the exception isn't good. I like you would greatly prefer it to only cost $350 and that the rest of the market would shift right along with that, but I don't see that coming to pass anytime soon. If anything we'll be lucky to see the new price tiers...

    Question Incredible Apple M4 benchmarks...

Yeah it's the same person, apparently he changed his account name. There's a few people who have done it for whatever reason. Unless there's some other way to tell that I'm not aware of you'd have to go back and look at an old post where someone replied to them as name in any quoted text from a...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

I'm waiting for the 13" model that I ordered to ship, but after reading some of the reviews I'm definitely excited for it to arrive. I'm somewhat curious to see if improvements in the media engines means that it could actually encode any of my Final Cut projects faster than my M1 MBP. I...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Maybe there's a market there for that, but anyone doing anything for an actual job is probably better off spending the money to get an H100 or MI300 that has even more memory, far more resources, and the bandwidth to keep all of the hardware fed. Running LLMs is going to be done by an NPU...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

I think that it'll be most popular with CAD users or people dealing with 3D graphics. For serious AI work you'll want a top end workstation if you're doing the work locally. If you aren't a $200 Chromebook that can SSH into a workstation is about as good as anything else.

    Question Speculation: RDNA3 + CDNA2 Architectures Thread

I disagree. If someone says they'll make something that's 3x better than anything else on the market, but only make something that turns out to be 2x as good, it's not a good product? It's still 2x better than anything on the market. What if they never told you it was supposed to be 3x better...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

The M3 Max has a lot of the die devoted to the GPU, but for encoding video/audio it'll use dedicated hardware blocks assuming it's a codec Apple supports. That's what makes is so fast. There are certainly users who need all of those GPU cores, but for a lot of Apple users they're seldom going be...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

I wouldn't read too much into anything related to what the market wants based on purchases of Apple hardware. The big APU is just half of the equation and a lot of that big APU is the dedicated hardware acceleration for the sort of things Mac users tend to do with their Macs. The average PC...

Probably improvements in some of the dedicated logic Apple bakes in to the hardware. They probably found a faster implementation that used more transistors that the node shrink gave them the room for. It might be something that was in M3.

    Question Speculation: RDNA3 + CDNA2 Architectures Thread

Didn't really matter as long as it was profitable for the miner, which it was. I think it was mostly supply constraints at the time. TSMC didn't have spare wafers, everyone was trying to get substrate which was apparently in very short supply for a few months, AMD had to fulfill agreements...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

I wonder if I can create a time paradox by making up a rumor and attributing it to an MLID video only for him to use that rumor as the basis for the video. Yeah, it's a bunch of random guys in their basements strategic command bunkers!

News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

They'd probably be best of breaking into the data center and professional markets first. The margins there are high enough to support the costs of development. They'll still need GPU tech for all of their desktop/laptop CPUs and they can spend the time getting drivers ironed out there before...

News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

The demise of Intel is vastly overstated. They might be taken out behind the woodshed next generation due to a confluence of AMD having a great new product and Intel being unable to juice theirs quite as much, but it's nowhere near as bad as what AMD crawled through during the Bulldozer era when...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

It doesn't have to be a completely new core to be a good SoC. Sometimes patching up what you have and making a few changes or worthwhile additions are fine. One concern I have is battery life. I don't think Apple talked about it, but they did mention how thin this new iPad is going to be and...

    Discussion RDNA4 + CDNA3 Architectures Thread

$200 is what it should be at launch. $250 is likely what AMD wants to charge. $220 sounds about like what they'll launch at after the $250 price leaks and everyone complains. With recent inflation levels, $200 isn't as much as it once was.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

This is just wrong on so many levels. Both AMD and Intel CPUs have a massive register file and use register renaming to eliminate false dependencies. Adding more execution ports doesn't necessitate clock regression either. I'm curious how you expect to improve IPC without being able to execute...

    Discussion RDNA4 + CDNA3 Architectures Thread

Maybe for N44 that's possible since it's so small that most dies will be good and the binned dies can be sold to OEMs who want a cheap, low power discreet card for some PCs. For N48 they're going to be at least two parts just to handle any parts with defects or lower performance characteristics.

    Question Wherefore art thou, 4k?

It really depends on what you're looking for as far as frame rates are concerned. You can get an RX 6800 for under $400 these days and that. According to TPUs results that has a 64.5 FPS average at 4K across their 25 game test suite. You really only need the most extreme high end card if you...

If I were an OEM I'd add a bit of bauxite to my components and slap an "Al" sticker on them to cash in on the craze. I wonder if Paul Simon would be willing to license one of his songs for a commercial. I AMD should take it a step further and change the name so it's the rAIzen AI 9 HX 170 AI...

    8GB VRAM not enough (and 10 / 12)

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

I (and I suspect this is true for most others as well) would be extremely surprised if it weren't essentially the same core. Apple no doubt made some fixes and tweaks as a part of porting the design to N3E, but I don't think there's a fundamental difference between them M3 and M4 cores...

They don't have to have different frequencies between the different categories. You can select for a frequency for which 20% (my hypothetical guess that may be more or less in actual reality) qualify for a certain amount on all 4 cores and the remaining percentage can hit if the weakest core is...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

Apple is saying "up to" so they could have picked something that benchmarks a bit better for whatever reason. I suspect that they've juiced the clocks a bit. I don't recall any mention of battery life improvements, so either I missed those or they don't exist. Some of that can be attributed to...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

That's my point. N3E had better yields, hence Apple has no reason to sell you an iPad with only 3 performance cores when the amount of area they take up is such a small part of the overall SoC. The only other way that you get to three cores outside of Apple fusing one off just to be evil, is...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

It's not the node that does it, but more aggressive binning. Yields are not so bad that Apple has to disable a performance core for the base models. Rather they have more aggressive performance targets and they disable the weakest core if all four can't hit the mark. Most people won't buy the...

Depends on the mix. If you want 85% of your sales to be the top model, then no. If it's 15%, much more doable. At the end of the day it's really just a matter of money. What isn't feasible suddenly is for the right price. It also depends on what you mean by console volumes. Apparently those...

    Discussion RDNA4 + CDNA3 Architectures Thread

I'm kind of surprised they don't use v-cache as a way to separate baseline and "better" model. Xbox used separate chips for their S and X models, but v-cache seems like another way to separate them as binning for hardware capability doesn't differentiate the parts enough. Console APUs are...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

I think you're making some improper assumptions. Apple has made no such claims. What they've claimed is that the new iPad is 50% faster than the previous generation iPad in a specific benchmark. Some of that performance gain is coming from the two addition efficiency cores that the new M4 iPad...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

If some models only have 3 performance cores, I'm curious if there will be cases where those are beat out by an older M2 model that has 4 performance cores. It'll still have a bump from going from M2 cores to whatever the M4 is using (I'm thinking it's the same cores as M3 with some minor...
