  1. Discussion RDNA4 + CDNA3 Architectures Thread

So what's the latest rumour on release dates? I'm hoping to build a new PC this year to replace my GTX1060/i7 6700 system, and I really hope the new generation of cards will be out in time. (I want a system that will run Lost Records Bloom & Rage beautifully on my 4k TV!)
  2. News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

In the consumer CPU space, Intel's foundries do give them one big advantage still- they can guarantee that they can deliver an ungodly number of chips, on time, to their clients. They don't have the same TSMC bottleneck that AMD (or Qualcomm for that matter) do, they aren't competing for wafers...
  3. News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

I do wonder how much future the Intel dGPU has, now that Intel are (apparently) committed to spinning off their fabs. GPUs made a ton of sense as a fab filler - high volume, big dies, need cutting edge process node tech to be competitive. (Talking long term, assuming Intel can get...
  4. News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

If we were working with any hardware vendor, that would be covered under an NDA :)
  5. News Intel GPUs - Battlemage rumoured cancelled (again)

Damn, I hope this isn't true :( We need more competition.
  6. Question AMD Phoenix/Zen 4 APU Speculation and Discussion

That would be very wasteful. AMD would be spending money on warehouses to hold the unsold product, and more importantly they wasted TSMC wafer allocations that could have gone towards better selling or higher margin products.
  7. Impressive homebrew games on the Atari 7800

That's pretty impressive! How well does the 7800 handle scrolling on both axes?
  8. News Intel 1Q24 Earnings Report

Would they need a buyer? Can't they just do some sort of share split, and leave Intel shareholders with a mix of shares in the two separate companies? (Proportional to the relative value of the two entities at the time of the split.)
  9. News Intel 1Q24 Earnings Report

Glad to hear they're up to 6 clients for 18A. Hopefully it's actually a viable foundry business.
  10. News Intel 1Q24 Earnings Report

    I'll grab the popcorn
  11. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

Xilinx made ARM SoCs before acquisition, and they continue to do it after acquisition. They've been doing it for over a decade.
  12. Discussion Qualcomm Snapdragon Thread

Sounds like Google is abusing their YouTube monopoly to give themselves an unfair advantage in the phone market... "Hey look, our midrange phone plays YouTube super smoothly!"
  13. Discussion Wicked Engine - Your thoughts, resident game developers?

We're on Unreal 5- it's certainly not a perfect engine and has plenty of issues, but it's a decent option all things considered.
  14. Discussion Wicked Engine - Your thoughts, resident game developers?

Don't want to dox myself ;) But nothing super high profile. (Hopefully my current project will be a bit more successful!)
  15. Discussion Wicked Engine - Your thoughts, resident game developers?

The pathfinding demos in that post are pretty rough. Grid based pathfinding doesn't tend to scale well to large open areas, navmeshes have been the typical approach for a long time now. (Admittedly I haven't dug into the source code to see if he's implemented any clever tricks like jump point...
  16. Discussion Qualcomm Snapdragon Thread

How's that worked out for Qualcomm in the last 8 or so years...?
  17. Discussion Future ARM Cortex + Neoverse µArchs Discussion

Consoles are inexpensive mass market devices. The Mac Studio is... not.
  18. Discussion Qualcomm Snapdragon Thread

Nobody wants to pay $30 a month for 5G on their laptop.
  19. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

We did have an Itanic thread, but it hit an iceberg.
  20. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

From what I recall it was slightly behind Skylake in per-core performance? Not bad for a first gen product in 2017, on TSMC 10nn. I wish things had played out differently!
  21. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

They definitely fumbled. They could have taken their Falkor core back in 2017 and adapted it for laptops, and actually taken WoA seriously for the past 7 years. Instead they wasted years and years of exclusivity.
  22. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

Intel did try to push BTX back in the day, but unfortunately it was tied to terrible Netburst CPUs. But yes, it would need a big push to make a change. Maybe if Valve produces a new Steambox, they'll also produce a new standard for boards? One can only hope.
  23. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

I don't want SBCs to replace DIY though- I just want DIY to be better. Sockets for big fat SoCs with wide memory buses, socketed memory, upgradeable storage.
  24. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

If the rise of ARM finally kills ATX, I'll be all in favour of it! It's an awful form factor that makes zero sense for modern systems. Huge number of unused legacy IO slots, awful airflow to the GPU and CPU, badly positioned power supplies, cables running all over the place, and about 4X the...
  25. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

ARM has IP in almost every smartphone, most of the embedded market, etc. Their revenue is 10x smaller than AMD's revenue. Why would AMD want to turn themselves into a poor man's ARM?
  26. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

Extra experienced hardware engineers to work on their server platform, access to Ampere's customers, a custom core to use in both server and consumer products without ARM per-core licensing fees.
  27. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

My personal theory is that Nvidia will acquire them. They're even based in Santa Clara.
  28. Question Intel Processor 300 - 2C/4T LGA1700

Is there a text version of this?
  29. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

Oh come on... Qualcomm had an internal server chip, complete with custom CPU core, then shut the whole thing down 5 years ago. They then proceeded to buy a server startup, kill their server chip, and refocus them on consumer chips instead. I'm not going to take any Qualcomm server rumours...
  30. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

The problem was more that Intel was dumping Bay Trail on the market with so many discounts that it had negative revenue. Go look up "Intel contra-revenue". Intel was trying desperately to fight the ARM tablet market and was throwing money and manufacturing volumes at the problem, it made it a...
  31. Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Intel put all their exciting new ideas into one product, just like with Pentium 4!
  32. Discussion Qualcomm Snapdragon Thread

How much energy is consumed producing your new laptop, then shipping it halfway around the world? All the plastics, microprocessors, metals that went into it all needed energy to produce. A lot of the time the most environmentally friendly option is to keep using your old system for as long as...
  33. Discussion Future ARM Cortex + Neoverse µArchs Discussion

AMD almost certainly structured their license with Samsung to restrict it to mobile markets. PC SoCs are a huge market for AMD, they aren't dumb enough to create a direct rival to themselves.
  34. Discussion AMD's Future APU Gone ARM?

AMD have a fantastic architecture in Zen4 and will presumably have an even better one in Zen5. Why would they choose to pay hefty per core license fees to ARM, while also getting worse Windows compatibility? Why put their fate in the hands of their rival?
  35. Discussion Qualcomm Snapdragon Thread

I thought JavaScript has this behaviour because that's how it works by default on x86? Is this not just replicating some old SSE truncate behaviour?
  36. Discussion Qualcomm Snapdragon Thread

A lot of people do the majority of their day to day job inside a web browser these days. "Better browsing speed" means they can do their job faster and more easily.
  37. Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

I remember the days when AMD were ruthlessly mocked for their 220W FX-9590, the last hurrah of Piledriver. "Space heater", people called it. And now this is just a normal and acceptable power limit for Intel's main CPU? What the hell happened?
  38. Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

I don't see the point of that to be honest- on a 128-bit DDR5 bus, that big GPU would be completely bottlenecked. I hope we'll see it in either it's own new socket, or at least available soldered down on Mini-ITX boards.
  39. Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

I'm afraid I'm a bit out of the loop- what's the latest news on Strix Halo? I'm interested in it for a new gaming HTPC, but I'm not sure what performance it's aiming for, or when it's actually coming out.
  40. Discussion nVidia's ARM SoC Coming Back?

Intel manufacturing is the cheap option for low end parts now? Owch!
