Could be nice as an inference server. Testing / playing with models is really easy on apple silicon, but performance could be better.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

That was the case since the first Zen core. Market not ready, see DDR prices. A lot of 6800/6700 stock. Halo product. Yes, they create server cores that can be used on desktop, not the other way around.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

It's possible, most SoC have cores that are not "visible" to the OS for special stuff, for example Zen SoC has an ARM Cortex for their security stuff (AMD Secure Processor). Those cores also run their own OS/Kernel. For Meteor Lake, that's more complicated as those cores are "exposed" to the...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Let's say they put Zen4 and Zen4c in an APU. Would it really be hybrid? Isn't "the hybrid" we talk about more of something like ARM big.LITTLE? If the cores are 100% similar in terms of functionality but only differ in terms of performance (frequency, cache, ...) could we really call it hybrid...

    Question 4070ti vs 7900xt

Ah yes, those that only poste a single part of a really long review. Here's some nuance: Go read the review, because those quotes without context don't tell the hole story. I don't know what's worse, "up-to" or cherrypicking ...

Discussion Speculation: Zen 4 (EPYC 4 "Genoa", Ryzen 7000, etc.)

How about removing a big portion of the cache on the die to add it back via V-cache? Placing the Vias could be an issue, but I find this idea kinda funny xD

Question Alder Lake - Official Thread

The cache "tiles" will be dirt cheap as the yields at that size should be close to 100%. The additional packaging costs will be nothing compared to having to spin a new die.

Info AMD confirms Windows 11 slow down its CPUs up to 15%

IMO, it looks like AMD found a bug in the new OS and can't fix it via driver alone. Microsoft will certainly release a Windows update and AMD will follow with a driver to handle the performance issue. As to why is was release like this, it's certainly a regression that happened just before...

Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

But what about games? Did anyone see a review around gaming on "non-unifrom-performance" cores? Maybe by down-clocking some of the cores? Games today seem to spread the charge evenly across all the cores and this could lead to some issues. Even when prioritising the p-cores I worry about frame...

News "Aurora’s Troubles Move Frontier into Pole Exascale Position" - HPCwire

Well, a lot of scientists have to write their own code so having a mature/simple stack like CUDA is really helpful, specially when you have limited access to the supercomputer ressources or limited budget for your local hardware. This happens a lot in universities. But, when you have a big...

So they changed the strategy again and went with a Tick-Tock-Rename instead? /s How often will Intel "realigning" itself with the industry in the future? This is just to "calm" down shareholders and says nothing about Intel's performance in the future. Not a fan!

Question Should Intel or AMD break backward compatibility and do a clean x86-64 reboot?

If weak models are the "best thing around", why are we not all running PowerPC? PS: TSO does increase the predictability of your cache, no small feat. This tasks needs to be handled by the compilers on more weak memory models.

Question Another potential big blow to Intel

ARM does not simply make your CPU fast, it's not some kind of faire dust you can throw around and make everything fly. Apple did not magically create a fast ARM Core, it invested a lot of resources to gradually improving its custom cores performance. Stop using the instruction set to downplay...

News Investors pushing Intel to split off manufacturing

Well, I don't think that Intel manufacturing is structured in a way to "earn" money, so this would fail without massive investment from external sources. GloFo all over again ... If Intel really lost the ability to produce state of the art manufacturing, just sell your Fabs to TSMC with some...

Question Should Intel or AMD break backward compatibility and do a clean x86-64 reboot?

I haven't done a lot of ASM in the past years, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember that the more modern instructions are the more complex ones to decode, where "legacy" ones tend to be more simple and require less decoding. No?

What’s the fate of K12/ARM at AMD?

The idea with K12 and Skybridge is to have a modular system for ARM and x86. Would it be viable to have ARM chiplets replace the x86 chiplets but keep the IO die and the platform the same? This could be interesting for light webservers where Zen cores are under-utilised. And what about having...

Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

I don't know, but I feel that both nodes had little impact compared to the end of the surge of those companies that "needed" new 14nm CPUs because of the mitigation. I had clients wanting those new 14nm CPUs, even in their private servers with no shared resources, where one could disable SMT...

Discussion Intel current and future Lakes & Rapids thread

Well, if you can compare Intel 10nm to AMD 7nm supply and state that it's "in full swing" while ignoring Intel 14nm volumes, why can't I say that people are waiting for Zen3 in a forum for pc enthusiasts? I could even say that Zen3 is "in full swing", despite the real issue to get a Zen3 CPU, right?

Discussion Squeezing the APU Zen2 refresh in the APU Zen 3 line-up, Why??

It's about choice. If you have more SKUs, the OEMs will have more products to sell and the consumer will have more options to choose from. But OEMs will not create new products based on "old" Zen2 4000 series, so having an Zen2 "refresh" will increase the SKUs for the 5000 series and give...

Discussion Squeezing the APU Zen2 refresh in the APU Zen 3 line-up, Why??

I agree that it's an issue for most consumers, but I still think that adding a letter it will not help, they will still buy the bigger number. And using <5500 for Zen2 and >5500 for Zen3 will also not help, as some Zen2 configurations (cores/threads, base/boost frequency, TDP, cooling) would be...

Discussion Squeezing the APU Zen2 refresh in the APU Zen 3 line-up, Why??

"Normal" people don't know what Lucienne or Cezanne mean, something in the naming would not help. As long as the price/performance is correct, this sounds like a great solution to give customers more choice.

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

Yes, but having the DRAM on the same substrate will still have benefits in terms of latency, what in turn will help with performance. It has nothing to do with ISA. The SoC performance looks great, but it's on 5nm with a lot of transistors, you can't deny that!
  35. D

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

And the special RAM configuration really should help with latency, not something we will see in desktop in the near future because upgrades :P

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

That's why I need to test those. If I need a new Mac mini tomorrow, I have to know if having a 16GB would be okay or if I have to still get the Intel version. As we mostly do development, we have zero usage for all the special stuff on the SoC (AI,GPU,...). ST performance is the most important...

    Discussion Apple Silicon SoC thread

I was no fan of the ARM transition and the release yesterday did not help. We will oder a unit for testing, but compared to the 6-core 32GB Mac minis we have at work, this is not that impressive. I hope the improved ST performance makes up for the 16GB limitation.
