    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Another positive thing about 7980XE seems to be availability. In my local shop it will be available in 2 days. The same for 7960X and 7940X. For people who care more about money and want Intel 7940X seems to be well priced.

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

Thats probably the highest overclock that makes sense on the 7980XE, as above that this monster will require a delid and draw too much power anyway. He managed to get very low voltages, its probably why it seemed so power efficient. Its still interesting that even with the standard Intel TIM it...

8x8GB should be preferable to 4x16GB as SS modules have better timings in comparison to DS modules. It's clear if you look at G.Skill website and compare various modules. They also support higher frequencies. You should use the 16GB modules only if you want maximum supported memory = 8x16GB.

The Ryzen "ThreadRipper"... 16 cores of awesome

For those interested in Threadripper and fearing the segfault problem: https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/6ubmd1/ryzen_compilation_segfaults_positive_rma/ it seems only early Ryzen batches were affected. Some people got replacement CPUs and they don't show this detect. Threadripper should...

The Apex and Extreme are now available on Asus website with details - https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel-platform-Products/ It appears they support some crazy memory clocks - Extreme seems to support 8x8GB 4200 CL19 according to QVL. G.Skill released this kit just on 14.8. The Apex seems...

The Ryzen "ThreadRipper"... 16 cores of awesome

1900X with halved cache, essentially being dual 4 core system with a BIOS switch for creator/gaming mode sounds like a very bad idea. Useful perhaps only if you need to use those PCIe lanes for storage or GPUs, but nothing else.

Do not buy cheap motherboards for high core count Skylake-X. Read http://www.overclock.net/t/1632665/intel-x299-socket-2066-vrm-thread and https://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/f12/lga-2066-mainboard-vrm-liste-1167715.html . Buy motherboard with 8+4 pin connectors or 8+8.

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

You make a compromise if you accept that not all your needs are met. I don't need more than 128GB memory, in fact 64GB is enough (8x8GB). DDR 3600 and above in 4 channel configuration give a lot of memory bandwidth. Xeons need 6 channel IMC due to usage of low speed ECC memory. I don't need ECC...

Ryzen, Skylake, and everything that's coming next. (MEGA discussion thread)

Epyc is very specialized and low clock solution. I also don't need that many cores, 12 would actually probably be sufficient. I want something that can handle VR in the future as well. I don't want to buy 2 computers. 1 desktop + 1 laptop must be sufficient. We haven't seen performance of 7980XE...

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

In Germany prices will naturally be lower as its a bigger market and higher elsewhere. I'm not going to buy 20 computers, just one. For now ignore 7920x at 1339€, it will come down gradually too. For me computer is like a car. I expect it to last for 5+ years. But unlike cars computers don't...

Asus Rampage 6 Extreme now has details on Asus website: https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-RAMPAGE-VI-EXTREME/HelpDesk_QVL/ I was really surprised by the QVL list. For DDR 4200 there are multiple entries for 8x8GB, with G.Skill being capable of 19-19-19-39. For DDR 3800 there are also...

    AMD ThreadRipper Reviews [Aug 30 - Tom's 1920X]

Just like zucker2k said the difference in total price is not that great. I'm also considering 7980xe, as it will be a nice cpu for VMs without compromises.

The Ryzen "ThreadRipper"... 16 cores of awesome

If you don't consider local prices at all price based arguments are invalid as 1950X simply doesnt cost $999 at all.
  17. W

The Ryzen "ThreadRipper"... 16 cores of awesome

Stop considering official $ prices and think about local prices too. Where I live 7900X is $150 more expensive and 1950X is $300 more expensive. Price wise 7900X competitor is 1920X in local prices which isn't really such a good deal at all.

    Intel Skylake / Kaby Lake

In Central Europe Intel seems to have better distribution network than AMD (less greedy) so as a result Intel gets an advantage here. A 1950X is $1300, 7900X is $1150. Official $ prices are relevant for US, but elsewhere they don't apply. Therefore 7940X will be a good competitor as price...

AMD 1950x Threadripper leak benchmark on ranker.sisoftware.net

That should be a warning to people who receive their motherboard before CPU and decide to take a look at it, reinserting the protective pin cover. Don't play with X299 or X399 sockets. From what we know TR has only 2 active dies and they probably don't need all 4094 pins. Its a speculation but...

AMD 1950x Threadripper leak benchmark on ranker.sisoftware.net

It's very close in many of those benchmarks in first post, and thats only 7900X. It's horrible because I haven't expected TR 16C to be that close to Skylake-X 10C in so many benchmarks. I expected a clear lead like in 2 of those 7 benchmarks. Yes it will be at heavy cost, $1999 for i9 18C vs...

ASRock: Coffee Lake CPUs not compatible with 200 series motherboards

You should ask yourself if you really need that 6 core coffeelake if you've got a 6700k. It's not a CPU requiring upgrade. Intel probably knows the number of people doing CPU upgrades is negligible so it doesn't care about them. AMD decided to reuse AM4 instead of introducing new socket and...

    [Hardware Unboxed] R7 1700 @4Ghz + 3200Mhz RAm = ~7820X @4.5Ghz

Who in particular? I think Ryzen is a decent CPU. It's IPC is about a match for Skylake-X. I said earlier if AMD fixes all the named bugs I may consider it. I have no problem with understanding why someone would buy Ryzen. What is surprising that people have hard time understanding why someone...

    [Hardware Unboxed] R7 1700 @4Ghz + 3200Mhz RAm = ~7820X @4.5Ghz

It isn't a problem for some people. But there are people who don't like when core count in CCX is reduced to 2. For what reason? Higher latency... You keep ignoring this and can end up with 1 core per CCX, claiming there is no problem with high speed memory. The advantage of Ryzen having low...

  36. W

    [Hardware Unboxed] R7 1700 @4Ghz + 3200Mhz RAm = ~7820X @4.5Ghz

    Threadripper BUILDERS thread

Interesting. It would mean that fast memory problems weren't only the fault of AGESA / slightly worse IMC than Intels but also due to motherboards if X399 can run officially 8GB memory at 3600. X370 Taichi officially only supported 3466.
  38. W

    [Hardware Unboxed] R7 1700 @4Ghz + 3200Mhz RAm = ~7820X @4.5Ghz

7820X is superior product to 1800X, but at much higher price than 1700X which can do almost the same. Intel products will always be more expensive than AMD as long as Intel has an advantage (customer trust, brand name, higher frequencies, less known bugs). Also keep in mind that 1800X pretty...
