    News AMD 1Q2024 Earnings

A lot of the Mi300x units that have been shipping are shipping on SPR platform. NVidia basically validated 2x SPR + 8x H100 platform. And Mi300x could just swap in for H100 in the same platform. So, some SPR are getting on the market even through this unlikely route. This was all due to time...

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

That's within realm of possibilities. It implies if core counts go up, then iso core power consumption increase (if any) is less than socket power consumption increase.

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

Vs. RPL? It's like saying "He is better looking than Quasimodo". It's literally the lowest bar to clear. The question will be ARL vs. Zen 4, ARL vs. Zen 5?

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

Where exactly do you think you are right, and I am wrong? My contention is that there will be more cores in Turin, Turin Dense (vs. Genoa, Bergamo), for that increased power consumption. Are you claiming that Turin core counts will stay the same, but power will go up? (just trying to clarify).

96C Genoa vs. 128C Turin is +25% power draw increase.

    News AMD 1Q2024 Earnings

I agree. Intel benefited from NVidia reference systems having SPR CPU. Clearly, because NVidia does not perceive Intel as a threat, rather than pairing it with far more capable Genoa CPUs. The customers are forced to use SPR. I wonder what percentage of Intel server CPUs have shipped this...

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

Turin also has increases in core counts. I am not sure how this ends up as far as power per core, but mentioning only one variable, TDP, is incomplete in light of # of cores changing. It would be more valid in desktop, where the core counts are not changing.

Intel processors crashing Unreal engine games (and others)

That is quite vague: Less power for a lot less performance? I think more interesting comparison is performance at a given power consumption. Do you think Intel will lead? As in: Zen 5 vs. RPL vs. ARL? Strix Point vs. MTL? There is a lot more discussion about absolute performance regardless...

    News AMD 1Q2024 Earnings

5% YoY revenue gain, while switching to a new socket is not bad. Next 12 months will be easier to ramp. Both Genoa / Bergamo and Turin.

    News AMD 1Q2024 Earnings

There is some double speak going on, if you pay attention: On IFS, Intel said that their costs are uncompetitive, and there will be huge improvement when they move to EUV. Meaning costs to make RPL are high. Then, they give the dies to the "Products" division at half price, and "Products"...

    News AMD 1Q2024 Earnings

Some time ago, precisely at Q3 2023 earnings conference, Lisa said it takes 7-8 months to produce Mi300. So this was the hardest time for AMD, those 7-8 months, with so much stuff in the oven, and not much coming out of the oven.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Any predictions if Zen 5 can match Apple M4 Geekbench 6 score that has been posted, in single thread? They seem to be continuously fudging Geekbanch 6, so not my favorite, but here it is anyway: M4: ~3800 7950: 3068

No, that's impossible. RDNA 3 is what it is, and it is unfixable. Anyone thinking otherwise, is still falling for the same "hype".

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

When it comes to forecasting, I used to read The Economist for years and years, and near the end of the magazine, they used to have (maybe still do) forecast for GDP growth for major (or notable) economies of the world. This was the average / consensus of economists who are being paid big...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

The new laptops with Strix Point come primarily from OEMs with Windows 11 pre-installed. Zen 5 desktop can run with Windows 10 just fine. Strix Halo? May need Windows 11, if the rumors of LP cores are true.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

E-Cores were the primary reason for existence of Windows 11. E-Cores were also the primary tool to catch up with AMD in Cinebench. Now, after the power limit fiasco with Intel chips, it seems that Intel can't beat AMD even with addition of E-Cores, so the reason for E-Cores vanished.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

We will see about doubling of Zen 5% IPC improvement. But, regarding Windows 10, it is good to remember that scheduler that can deal with different types of cores has not been added to Windows 10, that it is Windows 11 only feature.

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Agreed (as I already said in my original post). Cutting down the configuration so much, given there will be only 1 piece of (quite expensive) silicon of SoC. Number of partially recovered dies, from defects, would be too small (IMO) to launch the lowest end model. It would take millions of...

Strix Halo slide - of Strix Helo configurations - has not been posted here. Whie @adroc_thurston said he did not expect lower end configurations, I disagreed, my claim was that lower tier configurations would (or should) come. 8 core, 40 CU configuration would be ideal for gaming, and this...

Not exactly a substitute, but as a hardware feature for ISV / game developers to use. It is a very slow process for a hardware feature to become widely used. It's completely unrealistic to expect to have a game released precisely at the time of ARL release supporting a unique feature of ARL...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

The discussion was about how much market share Zen 5 can gain (if it is as good as people say). Intel's anticompetitive practices vs. technical capabilities of the products were brought up only in relevance to that. Intel has been under investigation in number for countries. You can look it...

Discussion Intel Meteor, Arrow, Lunar & Panther Lakes Discussion Threads

Software support for hardware features lags by too much time to be relevant to make the hardware feature a selling point for the hardware. Intel now talks a lot about "Centrino moment", but that hardware feature, WIFI, was built to the OS, and was ubiquitous for all applications as part of...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

The server market is (roughly) divided into the cloud and enterprise. Cloud guys are buying the CPUs based on technical capabilities, performance / price, TCO. In this segment AMD already exceeded 50% (in the US) last year. Enterprise market is mired in corruption. The steady stream of box...

Discussion Zen 5 Speculation (EPYC Turin and Strix Point/Granite Ridge - Ryzen 9000)

Outside of outright shady anticompetitive practices, Intel had (for most of the last several decades) real performance advantage in 2 to all 3 out of 3 major segments: Notebooks, Servers, Desktop. And then Intel could leverage these advantages for further anti-competitive practices. We may be...
