I bought four Arctic P12 Max case fans. 3 for the front, 1 in the rear. Completely unnecessary, as it's more than cool with the default 2 fans that came with the 4000d case.

But I must do it to satiate my first high-performing rig fantasy.
Next upgrade will be power supply - I'm eyeing RM1200x Shift (A-tier @ PSU ranking, ATX 3.0

Then this build will truly 'wake up' when I buy RTX 5080. This rig was supposed to be upgraded to 4080, but decided I have no immediate real need thanks to 2070.

Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

I believe I read a Corsair rep posting that 4000d supports all current RMx Shift line up.
I think it's a poor choice because the case isn't that wide. Cables coming out of the side of the PSU instead of the back will mean a tight, 90 degree bend between the PSU and the side panel. The shift seems more designed for dual-chambered cases that might rotate the power supply for mounting (such that the long axis is parallel to the motherboard instead of perpendicular).

1200W is also probably overkill.

Hmm I may look revisit this for the shift orientation. But currently, Shift is the only model that's ATX 3.0 certified. We use PSUs for nearly a decade. I understand the power spikes are fine for high-end PSUs, but I'd rather have a piece of mind with a official cert. And based on PSU tier list, Corsair has the best price and the quieter fan.

Thanks for making me research further. This is resolved.

4000d

4000x (same dimensions)

As for the wattage, the price difference is just $3 between 1000W ($186) and 1200W ($189) now. And I also thought 1200W would be overkill, but I did the math. My current spec (in sig) already clocks in at 529W on my old 650W PSU. This just happens to be at the ideal 80% utilization.

Now, when I finally buy a 4090 or 5080 (should be similar in performance based on generation history), the estimated usage becomes 764W. Now add those four extra Arctic fans, we're at 784W. A second SSD is definitely on the horizon. That's 794W. This indicates 1000W is just right. But at $3, I'm getting 1200W. There's RGB keyboard, mouse, and bunch of things charging off of USBs too. And a quality PSU should last a very long time until even 1200W is not enough.

Look into FSP or ASUS TUF if interested in keeping your PSU longer. These have environmental protection coatings etc. against humidity and dust.

Partpicker over estimates typical power consumption just to be safe, which is good, especially if you plan to really stress your rig.

Their estimate was over 400 Watts for our 4070 rig but during regular gaming it only pulls about 270W. Raytracing games add another 50 watts.

Our 3080 rig has similar performance but draws significantly more power. I expect your 5080 will draw a lot less than a 4090.

Agreed. But it's a $3 diff.

Seasonic's high-end/Titanium stuff has a 12 year warranty and is my "go-to".

Never had one fail yet. (to be fair I've had good luck w/Corsair and FSP PSU's as well)

ATX 3.1 is imminent. It's supposed to fix the 12VHPWR connector, which I'm guessing just means a new modular cable?

Does the SHIFT really help with cable management? There are plenty of ATX 3.0 PSUs by other brands; Corsair also has the RMe, considered a small step down from RMx but still Tier A.

It's not so much the cable mgmt, it's the ease of access. Let's find out, but the youtube vids show they're great.

RMe has a entirely different fan and is louder. That's why the tier list gave RMe the blue lettering instead of the gold letter (the best within the tier).

My queen is getting additional upgrades today. The stock case fans (1x front 1x rear) have been uber quiet and fine. But I must satiate my first high-performing rig fantasy. I mean, these aren't even Noctuas right?

My PC is quiet but I can hear it. I have a feeling that generic PSU fan contributes to it. I can't wait to see how this big fan boy will perform.

I KNEW IT! I knew it was the power supply making the most noise in my generally quiet system.

I installed the new power supply. The zero RPM mode makes it pitch quiet. Previously, it was quieter but you could tell the PC was on. Now, I finally can't even tell.

Super quiet, super cool.

Also the front case fan is now hitting the CPU as well. Now I'm idling at 37C with no noise. If I blast the fans during idle, it gets cool as 35C! (Vs the old 39C idle).

This system is an absolute win and will be a beast with the rtx5080.

I prefer not using the "zero" fan setting, instead going with the lowest RPM "exhaust" adjustment available.

Reason for this is I prefer the heat being exhausted from my PSU not being blown directly into my 3080's fan. (if you have decent exhaust fans the PSU is venting some heat inside the case when powered on)

Also at "zero" fan settings dust inside the unit itself can become an issue being drawn IN and a PSU's interior isn't the place you want to play around trying to clean beyond a blast of compressed air.

This is a non issue for me because... drum roll please:

I got them fancy-pants modern PC case with a supporting bottom-mount PSU. The modern PSU fan is also oriented that way as well. So the PSU heat intake & exhaust are completely isolated from the rest of the system. It sucks in cool air from the cold floor and suck it out all by itself, separated from the CPU/mobo/GPU/fans/etc.

Here are some examples below. The PSU airflow has 0 interaction with the rest of the PC. Man, the nerds and the PCs going mainstream made things so good.

I prefer having my PSU "inhale" filtered air from inside my case although the option to mount it fan-down does exist. (Corsair 5000X)

With the airflow from 6x 120mm Corsair Maglev fans in "silent" mode (intake) plus 4 more exhaust, noise and heat are none-issues.

Playing with the RGB... solid white looks good instead of the default rainbow. It matches the power button too.

(There is no wire crossing the heatsink, that's the reflection outside)

A minor update: I removed the ridiculous HDD cage / shroud at the bottom of the case that's blocking all of the airflow from the bottom half of the bottom fan. Man, removing the cage was unnecessarily cumbersome. The screws were uber tight and no human hand could get a grip in that tight spot.. So I had to remove the power supply again. How typical.

I felt like a discount surgeon who just excised a cancerous growth. I got to do some additional cable management too while the case was open. It's all done now. This machine is a lean silent cool beast. I don't have to open it again until I upgrade to RTX5080. My PSU thirsts for it.

Can you tell I'm enjoying this build? Cheers to you all for helping out. God, the troubleshooting was unnecessarily torturous (if you go to the first page). But it's all behind now.

Who knew a case is one of the best things I love about my PC build. Damn, they design them to be clever with tons of QoL improvements and overall contains very thoughtful considerations.

I'm currently at a cool 37C idle with no noise. Dead quiet. It was mainly 40C before like most 7800X3D users, but all these improvements added up. If I blast all fans to max, then it chills down to a 35C idle and Cinebench can't go above 80C (vs 86~ before the 3x Arctic case fans. Who needs watercooling?

I like how understated it looks by avoiding the RGB for the front fans. Here, the screen is 32", so the desk is nice and wide with my work laptop (R) and personal laptop (L):

I was going to wait for the RTX 5080 since my current games play more than fine with the beastly CPU & RAM on the old RTX 2070. And I wanted a 5000 series for GTA6. But it'll be until January 2025++ at $1200-1400 if I get super lucky and they don't get sold out at every restock.

But scouring FB marketplace got me a great deal! I got a brand new PNY RTX 4080 Super for $765 shipped from some rich dad in Rhode Island.

I'm more than happy. The GPU arrives tomorrow.

4080/4080S is a lot of GPU. Enjoy!
