I keep thinking of the missing films ....

Vanishing Point

Super Soul:
Kowalski, can you hear me? Do you hear me, Kowalski? Now, I know you can hear me, Kowalski. I'm sure you hear me now. This very minute. Now, you listen very carefully. The whole mobile force of the Nevada State Highway Patrol is after you. They waitin' for you to come up for air.

One of Cleavon Little's earliest film roles.

Then came the computer fakery instead of real scenes.
Yeah but the computer fakery for Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey actually impress me more coz they are better examples of human ingenuity and how they accomplished so much with so little. Humans (or Americans if you want to be specific) landed on the moon in 1969 with the limited technology of that time. And now with vastly modern technology, nations are twiddling their thumbs and going, oh but it's so expensive. Just die in shame, you lazy descendents of humanity!

I remember being glued to the screen watching Tron as a kid. Damn, those were good times.

Compiling your list still?
of the best films to see before you die? you really want me to do that ? i can sure point you towards the films that had the most impact on me, but that doesnt mean they will have the same impact on you. We tend to confuse the impactr a film has on us, with the quality of the film itself.

what a fucking dumb list.

To be completely fair the author of the list does not say why they think you must watch these films.

Take this for example:

IMO, 12 seconds of joy. Is the dog's acting Oscar-worthy? No. Yet my point remains.

Imagine consulting a 'must see films' list and watching 'Gone With the Wind' for the first time on your deathbed. I'd consider it my mission to get better regardless and fuck up the author of the list! Perhaps that was their intention.

Yes, please, if you find the time. Bonus points if you describe in one sentence the level of impact the movie had on you.
if you recall, i had already gone through the list of IMDb's Top 250 films once, in the older thread. Also these days i cant do much thinking so i'm gonna say no.

...

Have to add to the lists -
...

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
...
Love the Holy Grail but I gotta go Life of Brian for my favorite Monty Python movie. The suicide squad attacking makes me piss myself in laughter every time no matter how many times I have watched it and the song at the end is great. Plus seeing Biggus Dickus hung like a third grader.

i've only watched 2 out of these 30, the truman show and back to the future

actually maybe only the truman show - i think i only saw back to the future 2, not the original
Didn't like The Truman Show, maybe because I didn't have a TV for 20 years. To get into it you have to be into TV, was my take.

I really liked BTTF but I tried the first again a few years ago and wasn't drawn in. I have it on my shelf, could try again, maybe I wasn't "in the mood."

Some movies are amazing the first time coz they introduce you to something novel or unimaginable. Once the cat is out of the bag, repeat viewings may fail to impress. I think M. Night Shyamalan's movies suffer from this problem.

Something like The Matrix, well, the whole package is so great that I never mind watching it again every few years.

On that note, it's been ten years since I saw Interstellar. 10 years just whizzed by! Gotta watch it again some time.

There was certainly some scathing commentary on TV and how people watch it. But you most certainly do not have to be into TV to appreciate the movie. The idea goes back to Heinlein's short story They. Then Phillip K. Dick ran with the idea in Time Out of Joint. So technically The Truman Show is yet another adaptation of a Phillip K. Dick novel.

It has such a big impact that people suffer from the condition which has been coined the Truman Show Delusion. For me that was the hook when I saw it all those years ago. Jim Carrey turned in a great performance. Truman becoming increasingly unhinged as he either descends into madness or finally proves his belief that his whole life is being staged. From his perspective he could not be 100% certain which. And he starts doing things that land you in a psych ward or jail IRL.

I have been seeing recent articles about how it is finally getting its props. My hypothesis is its growing popularity correlates with legalization of weed in more states. 🤣 It is not a bad movie, but it's imminently forgettable to me.

For anyone that has not watched Stalag 17 in many years, do yourself a favor and watch it. You don't remember how good it is, that's all. The comedy of the 2 guys sneaking into the Russian women's area is top shelf. The plot is excellent, and the payoff at the end is one of the most satisfying IMO.

Hogan's Heroes really shit all over its legacy, despite being a good show in its own right.

Of course I've heard of it, likely never saw it. I had impression it was a book first, but no, evidently a broadway play originally. My library has the DVD, I put a hold on it, will give it a try, although I only infrequently like movies from before, say, 1958. There are exceptions, definitely.
