In 2016, three men camping out nearby in Crystal drank rum and chased rabbits around the desert with shotguns before deciding to take aim at the surveillance camera outside of the then-10-foot fence encircling Devils Hole. After that, they proceeded to ram their ATV into the gate, scale the fence, take their clothes off, and start punching each other. One of the men vomited onto a boulder while another lowered himself onto the shelf of Devils Hole, smashing pupfish eggs and larvae during their peak spawning season. Park officials found his boxer shorts floating in the water the following morning; he later served one year in prison for charges including a violation of the Endangered Species Act.
