Question Best ITX board for a 5700x3D build: a top B450 or a cheap B550?

Anyway, I can confirm that the Asrock B550M-ITX/AC has curve optimizer available with a 5600X3D installed.

I don't mess around with extended testing or per core with curve optimizer. I set it to -30 and game. If it isn't stable I dropped it to -25, then if needed -20. None of my 3Ds have needed to go lower than that. The one you sent me is holding up at -30 so far.

Speaking of that 5800X3D; I have it under a Deep Cool 120MM AIO and I am completely over this form of cooling. Don't get me wrong, it's getting the job done. But I think I am going to order that Phantom Spirit you recommended. It's only a fraction of an inch taller than the peerless assassin so it will fit in the nr20 with the side panel on correct? It's also only $3 more than the PA at the moment.

I have the Ultra 120EX installed in mine with the side bracket removed and a mesh panel. It's 157mm tall according to the specs. The mesh side panel fits flush with this cooler. The NR200 specs say 155mm max clearance but there must be some wiggle room built into that to cover different platforms. The Phantom Spirit SE is only 154mm (1mm shorter than the peerless assassin SE) while the non SE and EVO versions come in at the same 157mm as the Ultra 120EX (the non SE PA is also 157mm) because they have the decorative top plate. I'd go with the Phantom Spirit SE if you have the glass panel and want to use it otherwise any of the PS versions should fit with the mesh.

So ASUS will let Intel owners push the absolute limits on 13/14 series as "stock" settings, but don't allow AMD users to use CO on X3D chips? That makes perfect sense!

What don't you like about the AIO? I love mine as long as I top it up every couple of years or so, it gurgles otherwise!
It's pretty silent and I'm never completely comfortable with large metal weights leveraging against my MB!

TBF I think that it's only the X470 boards, and no one would be buying those new now.

It's pretty silent and I'm never completely comfortable with large metal weights leveraging against my MB!

I've had 2 die from pump failures in the last 6 months or so, creating more tech recycling/e-waste. I also don't like all the hoses and wires that it uses, or radiator in my mini-ITX build. ARGB fans and pumps can suck it. I never had a problem with heavy air coolers, not even the Noctua D15. A bad fan is far less e-waste too.

I'm with you on the ARGB stuff inside the case. It looks nice on some peoples rigs but there's too much stuff going on in mine for that!
My bequiet AIO has been chugging along for a few years now with no maintenance (apart from me topping up the coolant last week).
TBH the 5800X3D doesn't need a hefty cooler. It's kinda going to ramp up the heat a little regardless of your cooler because there's a nice layer of cashe memory sitting above the die so I just tune the fans so they are silent and the temp plateaus at about 85c at full boost for extended times.

There's not much working in the Asus' favor to be honest. The Asus is still a pretty good board though. I sold mine before Zen 3 came out. I have no idea if it's the same situation as @WelshBloke has with his Asus x470 board in regards to the PBO menu being unavailable with X3D installed.

Looking at already existing builds, I see this CPU paired with the Asus, never with the Asrock.

I wouldn't make much of it. This is probably down to there being more of a market for these CPU's as upgrades to existing systems or a case of someone getting a deal on a used Asus ITX board. They probably sold a ton of those before B550 came out as they were one of the best 400 series ITX boards as far as price, performance, and features. I'd bet few, if any of those systems were built using new in box motherboards.

Loserbenchmark has demonstrated it is untrustworthy as a source for anything other than derisive laughter. 💩

My other ITX build is the AORUS PRO, the most expensive AM4 mITX board Newegg sells 1st party now. If it weren't for the newer wifi&BT I would not be able to tell them apart in use. If I forget to plug in ethernet on the ASRock I know it the second I try to download anything. Where as the PRO maxes out my internet plan easily. I'd swap it out if I didn't have hard wired as an option.

The only other thing I could complain about is only having one NVME slot. If it was my primary box, I'd have paid extra for the Phantom Gaming to get the extra slot on the back. I won't be using this build as a Steam Machine with Holo iso or Pop!_OS because it's a slight PITA to swap sticks. Even my previous ASRock Fata1ty Gaming B450 ITX/ac had the extra slot, and it was a $99 board.

The build is ready - had to wait for the CPU to arrive.

At the very last moment, I decided to change the cooler. I ended up installing a Be Quiet! Shadow Rock LP, paired with a slim Noctua fan. The cooler was 75 cm tall with its factory fan, so this arrangement is actually 2mm shorter than the Thermalright. And I prefer the copper heatpipes on the Shadow Rock, anyway.

Fitting it all into the Q58 was a bit delicate, the cooler is such a monster that the CPU power cable had to be connected before installing the motherboard in the case.
