Question Best random read & writes on M2 SSD? Solidigm SSD P44 Pro? Other options?

My brain hurts after reading/watching so many M2 SSD drives reviews. I'm about to get an i7-13700k and a MSI Z90-Pro Wifi mobo. As for the M2 SSD, I was originally going to buy a Samsung 980 Pro SSD for around $110. Then I heard about the Solidigm SSD P44 Pro and it performs better, overall, than the 980 Pro. But for me, it's all about the random read/write performance.

I was wondering how these two drives might compare to other PCIE 4.0 M2 SSD drives? If you can provide any insight, that would be great. So far, Newegg has the P44 Pro 2TB for $159, which seems like a steal. But if there are 'better' drives out there with random read/write performance it would be good to know. (Also, is still has to have high sustained read/write #'s.)

Look into the U.2/U.3 drives. They hit all the same tiers as M.2 but, come in a 2.5" format. They will require an adapter and cable to mount them on consumer boards but, they can also go beyond the storage capacity of an M2. 8TB for instance goes for ~$400 where an M2 would be $800.

This is really what people do? I am between a hynix p41 2tb for 140 and a t500 crucial for 150. I used to get 4tb s770 or something for 200ish but looks like bad prices right now.

I did notice a solidem p41 for cheaper didnt know that brand was trustable.. thnx now i will look (but already ordered the t500 crucial 2tb for 150 )

edit. Ok just checked the t500 is still better than p44 pro! Guess ill buy this one for all new builds till 4tb drops to 200 again

The Solidigm P41 is an SK Hynix product as well. As TechJunky pointed out the old Intel stuff. I bought a couple of Solidigm P41s for my kids builds for game storage and they have been fine, but we don't run synthetic benchmarks frequently to test if they are still operating at their rated speeds. They have not complained about them.

And no, most people just buy M.2. Tech Junky was providing an alternative.

I went with crucial 2tb t500 (reviewed better then p44 pro sildium) and think the guys hynix p41 Plat is just a fluke or something was happening in the background like typical windows. I'll look on amazon see if anyone has same complaints after 4tb would yield a 30% star hit

Did you read the thread? There are several people posting about it, all having similar issues. Several have received refunds for their drive from SK Hynix. It's not a fluke for 1 person.

I doubt you would be able to tell the difference in speed in everyday use. I have a Dell XPS laptop with a Gen 3 drive (Micron 2300) and a desktop with Gen 4 drives (Samsung 980 Pro). I don't see the desktop as being significantly faster than the laptop, despite the Gen 4 drives as being over 2X faster. Both drives are fast enough in real world use cases.

(But my post already said I went with the t500 and op doesnt mention it) shocked I thought hynix was a solid brand since they make the chips. A recommendation over the t500 crucial be cool. The s880 4tb almost looks tempting.

That's right, I can't tell the difference in real world use. But why would I recommend a drive to someone that wouldn't operate at its rated speed? That indicates that there's something wrong with the drive or with how Windows uses the drive . In either case I wouldn't recommend it at all irregardless of it's speed.

Just get either or both WD Black SN850X or Samsung 980 pro. That's what iam planning to get for my future build.
