First, how normal is it to use HDMI from a graphics card for audio these days?

Second topic, Can I just add an hdmi cable from the video card to the sound bar? Will win10 think it is a second monitor? Will there be a large latency issue between audio and video if one is HDMI and the other display port?
I have a sound bar I'm using for a computer speaker, but win10 refuses to recognize it as anything except 2channel stereo via optical connection.
I use display port to go from an EVG 3080 ftw3 to a benq 32in EW series monitor. There is no HMDI-ARC on the monitor.

Let me know if this question is better suited to a different part of the forum.

Not very common, probably not used unless you game on your TV and/or are hooked up to a home theater setup

I don't know, but isn't a soundbar just a stereo setup in a fancy bar?

Depends on the sound bar. This one has 5 speakers in the bar.

I went into sound control panel in Win10 and used a 5.1 channel test sequence. The sound bar fired one speaker at a time, as it should. But Win10 doesn't have an option to define the optical output as 5.1 channel, which would cause things like music to scale from 2.0 to 5.1. It is a feature you can use with "computer speakers" using the 3.5mm audio outputs.
For my computer with this sound bar using an optical connection, the only way I can use the sub and the 3 remaining speakers is the game/movie/streaming service compresses audio into a Dolby format.
I loaded Dolby's software to Win10 because it should also be able to take a stereo signal, create a 5.1 channel signal which the sound bar could then decode. The Dolby software can't recognize speakers on the optical output. It needs HDMI. It won't using the scaling software until HDMI is the audio output source.

Typically, HDMI w audio run to a TV, the TV then has a HDMI-ARC output that can run to the sound bar. My monitor lacks this output.

So, I want to directly connect HDMI audio from my video card to my sound bar. I can't seem to make it work though. Dunno if there is a setting or what to get my video card to act as an HDMI-ARM . win10 just says nothing detected on the output.

Don't know if that makes more sense, but I suspect if it is possible there is a setting in the video card software or a jumper or something that allows the video cards HDMI output to configure as an ARM channel.

Did you DL the nvidia hd audio driver? I suspect you will have to do it though nvidia control panel.

I had both HDMI and DP connected at same time, and it was providing audio to my monitor speakers, I would switch to HDMI because it loaded post screen faster, by using the monitor input control. HDMI would only do 60hz for me where DP does 100hz in the nvidia control panel.
This was while dialing in settings for BIOS. DP still takes a long time to get to windows, might be the cable, IDK not worried about it right now as its a Kepler GPU.

Forgot to hit reply so you would get notification. see above.

Edit I would fool around with it and see, Maybe software for motherboard audio has something.
