Adolescence - bad - the first episode pulled me in and I had no clue it was shot in the "no cut" fashion when we started it, and I knew nothing about it when we started it. But after the first episode it completely falls flat and is just very "meh". If it was more than 4 episodes I would not have even bothered finishing it, but I did and before it was even close to ending, I told my wife there was no way the payoff for this is going to be worth it. And I was more than right.

Have to agree, a literary "slice of life" story adapted to TV. First 2 episodes were good and the last 2 were excruciating to watch. Stephen Graham delivers and the psychologist was amazing (She also plays Mary Carr on "A 1000 Blows") . I was waiting for something to wrap it up but that something never came. I can appreciate what they were doing but I have enough depression in my life without having to watch it on TV also.

As soon as the last episode started and we saw where it was taking place, I knew there was zero chance it would wrap up in a way that would satisfy me.

If you look on IMDB at the reviews there are so many 10's that say how perfect and amazing the show is. It's so obvious that most of those are bots/shills.

FLOW . https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4772188/

The wife and I watched flow last night.

Very strange. I couldn't stop watching and trying to figure out what happened. My wife freaking loved it. I could tell because she watched and didn't talk...There is no dialogue and no narration. It reminded me a lot of Ghibli stuff but without humor.

Not everyone will enjoy this movie but I would give it a solid 8 , maybe a low 9. For me that is really high. I don't think there has ever been a perfect movie.

i watched two films which are part 1 and part 2 of the same story,

Jean de Florette - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091288/reference/

and

Manon des Sources - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091480/reference/

which were shot together, and they are the result of a two-film adaptation of the 1952 original Manon des sources.

In the first, a young farmer returns from the war with buds of carnations, which grow prodigiously in his field, prospecting a great fortune selling flowers. He does have a shortage of water, which his uncle plans to solve by buying a neighbor's land, together with the "source" (sping) that comes with it.
Things go horribly sideways, and the neighbor is killed by the uncle during a heated discussion. The uncle ignores the fact that he straight up murdered the guy, and goes on with the plan. He blocks the spring with cement, and when the son of the neighbor (a young Gerard Depardieu) shows up to take up the inherited land, fails to tell him about the spring, hoping that he will give up on farming the land and sell it to them cheap.
This too goes wrong and the son winds up dead as well. Uncle and nephew finally manage to get their hands on the land, with the spring.

In the second, years later the farm is successful. Manon, the young daughter of (Depardieu) who still lives in the area, finds the source of the spring, deep within a cave. Having witnesses as a young child that the Uncle and nephew knew about the spring, she wants revenge, and closes the spring, leaving the entire village without water. Because all the villagers have a dirty conscience, with none of them having told Depardieu of the spring that was on his property (they didn't like this city boy wanting to become a farmer), they believe that they are being punished by God.
The girl uses this trick to get the villagers on her side and to cast out the uncle & nephew, and then by a trick the spring comes back to life.

Both very traditional film, i found the first script more interesting, because the need for water that both the nephew and the son have, carries a sense of urgency - they need water NOW. So there is a current of pacing that pushes the film along, which the second script doesn't have. And while the second film has even a brief nude scene with the absolutely gorgeous Emanuelle Beart (who was 23 at the time but looked barely 17), the story is far less engrossing. And, wholly dependant on the plot of the first film.

The .. well, main character, being the Uncle, played by Yves Montand, is more subtle of a character in the first film. The guy kills his neghbor by throwing him on a rock, but sees it as an accident. He tries to destroy the son's livelyhood, but sees it as a simple ruse, a normal business trick. He's a terrible person with no remorse, but is also oblivious to being so.
The nephew plays to contrast, being weak willed enough to go along with the scheme, but also being substantially more innocent and remorseful.
The real protagonist is, in fact, the land. The water, the spring.

The first film is fairly good, if you are ok with it being quite relaxed in telling its story. It still keeps going because of the aforementioned urgency for this water, but the style is quite "visually descriptive", with individual scenes taking quite long, instead of concentrating the action as more modern films would.

7/10

the second film is .. unfocused. The main plot is the love story between Manon (Beart) and a hitherito unmentioned scientist, who is studying the soil in the area. There is supposed to be a triangle with Manon also being the interest of the older-and-uglier nephew, being pushed to marriage by the Uncle, to restore the family name to greatness, which the Uncle schemes to do by allowing Manon, through marriage, to re-acquire the farm with the spring. But this is not really interesting, and neither is a veeery on-the-nose plot twist, with the main plot of the film being how the two young, hot blonde kids become a young, hot blonde couple and fool all the old, ugly and not blonde farmers because young, hot and blonde humans are inherently superior to anyone who isn't young, hot, or blonde. Like that famous Austrian painter guy said.

6/10 including the nude scene and Beart's general hotness.

Not my kind of movie. I just fast forward and had enough.
Also, in the beginning of the movie the rifle cartridge/round is placed backwards in the cartridge magazine by the female character and then the cartridge magazine is placed in an automatic rifle and when she shoots, the bullet comes out the barrel like normal.
That was something, kind of killed it for me already.

i watched a whole bunch of stuff that wasn't worth reviewing, and i also watched the entire first season .. which also means, the whole show, since it's been cancelled, of

Wayne - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7765404/reference/

And, it's wasn't great, unfortunately.

It starts strong .. there's this kid, Wayne (who would have guessed) who is imbued with near-supernatural violence, and despite being but a twig he'll take on people three times his size. Great you say, it's gonna be a show about ass-whoppings, who doesn't like that.
But, this isn't consistent at all during the show. And since this *is* the show, it really falls apart when you change the character midway. It's as if Jack Reacher started getting his ass kicked or missed the important shots.
The love interest was a much better character/actress combo, but the protagonist was half-baked.

The Lost Room - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0830361/reference/

Badly shot, mediocre acting from an uninspired cast, but script-wise a very interesting (and short) tv show about a mysterious room filled with mysterious objects, all capable of strange magical powers, from the absurd, to very powerful.
According to the wikipedia page, this was behind the rough draft of the script, "what if some character or actors had very unusual superpowers".

Worth a shot if you can get past the poor production quality. Peter Jacobsen supports, and you can never go wrong with him.

I was cleaninng out my Watchlist from IMDb

The Scribbler
because it had Sasha Grey in it, but she has maybe a minute of screen time.

Superfast!
turns out there is ONE fun scene in the whole film, and it's the one you've seen on youtube.

Triangle of Sadness
vaguely decent film about how people become horrible when the rules of human society break down

The Black Phone
okaish horror film with not much horror in it.

Disaster Movie
not funny, mostly because it's too many spoofs in a row, like, a spoof every 30 seconds. You're not art bro, give us time to breathe.

The Last Remake of Beau Geste
this is the third time i try to watch this film and still couldn't get into it.

Doctor Odyssey S01E01

The writing is good. Lots of new stuff I learned and also grateful that I never had to pursue medicine (which my dad really wanted me to because he wanted a doc in the house. He got my brother as a dentist when I failed him). But the show has that annoying "Suits" tv show vibe. You know, cheesy humor. People being sarcastic to each other's faces. Lots of fake smiling. I can't tolerate another episode of this kind of crap.

Finished watching Primal https://www.imdb.com/title/tt10332508/. 10/10

Genndy Tartakovsky is a brilliant storyteller.

Finished Reacher Season 3. Bit of a letdown; too predictable and the fight with Paulie was disappoint.

I keep trying to watch Star Trek Enterprise, I'm on S1:E3 and it is failing miserably to get me invested. Does it ever get good?

I'm halfway through it. Feels like a bit of a chore to watch due to the predictability; I've relegated to my "shows I watch while exercising" list lol. Needs more yeet moments lol.

PS - I need to go do some pushups now lol

There are not as many winners in Black Mirror Seasons as the early ones, but still worth a watch. Season 7, six episodes, six mini trailers.

I saw it on Youtube when it came out years back. I think you gave it a fair score. There were some really relatable scenes for me based on my troubled yoot, so I might be willing to go 6.5/10

Rewatched The Last Boy Scout. This was peak early 90s action. 8/10 for the genre and period.

"Why did Mr. Milo cross the road?"
"Because his dick was stuck in the chicken"

"Where are you going?"
"To the bathroom. You wanna come? doc says I shouldn't lift anything heavy"

I have been meaning to watch that. Did I pick a good seat?
The writer and director is kind of a genius. He turns a normal vacation into seriously disturbing shit in every season. It does require patience however. Most episodes are slow and akin to "rich people watching".

And yes, that seat is kind of crazy. The one on the left would do anyone. The one on the right is a soulmate nutter (my kinda girl).

I mean the whole people watching commentary that started in this thread recently it's just kind of weird. Many great films and shows are basically people watching. I have no idea how that instantly becomes a negative critique of something.

The show puts people of all different backgrounds into a setting, an examines the human condition from there, and that requires people watching.

I mean God forbid .

I mean Seinfeld sucked, it was just people watching right.

Canary Black - 8/10

Was a fun film, with a twist.
And Kate Beckinsale is sure fun to see. Already 51 years old, but looks fantastic.

The Machine - sci-fi AI movie. I liked this. It starred the kinda younger Guy Pierce looking actor and this pretty amazing female actress. I do think they should have probably given it a bit more run-time to flesh out the timeline a little better, but it was a dark and brooding lower budget sci-fi movie with an overall cool plot in the world of AI/android sci fi movies. Would recommend.

About to start watching Paradise on Hulu. Scrolling by it the last month I thought it was just some sort of political thriller. Which apparently it is but I also just found out that it takes place in a dystopian future. And that makes it interesting, along with the overall reviews. Going to give it a go. Anybody watching this?
