I've never even heard of 3 Ninjas. Had to look up and watch the trailer (American version) just to see if I'd recognize it, and nope. I would've been about 6th grade maybe when that came out. I probably would've liked it back then. IDK if I could watch it now.

I have seen exactly none of the movies nominated for Best Picture at the latest Oscars. I figure some of these are available in BR from my local library (or will be soon). I snapped this off my TV. They were presented in alphabetical order.

Which of these would you recommend? And why? Thanks!

I have seen Conclave and The Substance.

Both of them are gripping, though The Substance goes off the rails at the end (not in a great way). But still, I don't think you are going to regret watching either of them.

Well, I have to wait for them, which is no problem because I have so so many things to do! I'm 41st in line for Conclave and 28th for The Substance.

Substance sounded good on "Roanoke Gaming" "dissection" of the film.
Dune pt2 If you watched the 1st you have to watch the 2nd.
Rest are unknown to me. I am on a Korean Sci-Fi Apocalypse trend atm,. Geoysong (SP) creature was good imo have to use subtitles though, the english dubs are awful. Sweethome, was good IMO. Bugassal (SP) was also good.

i watched

Scipione Anche Detto L'Africano - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067719/reference/

where sometimes, it pays to speak italian.

Starring Marcello Mastroianni (considered one of italy's greatest historical actors) alongside his own brother - whose existence i ignored until yesterday - Ruggero Mastroianni, playing brothers Scipio Africanus and Scipio Asiaticus (again, didn't know this historical figure existed).
Also starring the beloved and equally loved Vittorio Gassman as Cato Censor.

Scipio has returned to Rome from his victorious campaign in Spain and finally Africa, conquering Carthage. The city is triumphant and Scipio rests on his laurels, but the odious, arrogant Cato wants to know the whereabouts of a supposed payment of 500 talents (1500kg) of gold, tribute to Rome, that has disappeared during the campaign. Scipio, being a man of pride and honor, refuses to hear the accusations, dismissing them on the grounds of him being such as hero to Rome, one who has sacrificed so much. But elsewhere, those close to him criticize him for having lost the willingness to fight, both on the field and in person.

The whole film is in modern roman lingo, meaning, the type of italian slang they talk in rome today - this is common of just about all of a large number of italian "historical" films. Minimal sets and costumes, and since you can always drive 20min outside of rome and find some ruins, it was very easy to film "on location", so to speak.
As it's also standard for italian film, it's both a comedy and a tragedy, because we're completely fucking incapable of imagining a situation where things don't go wrong.

For you, i wouldn't recommend it. For a native, it's ok, in the average, amiable but not noteworthy.

My vote: 6.5/10. All 3 of the main actors have done far better - and similar - work elsewhere.

i have watched

Kafka - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt27195940/reference/

It's a german-language, hardsubbed show based on the life of famous author Franz Kafka. The wikipedia page states "Kafka's difficult relationship with his tyrannical father" but it's not at all a biopic, the bio- is merely an excuse to try to show the absurd writing style of Kafka, in visual format; and, i have to say, it works. You have to give it a bit of time, i say by EP02 it should kick in. Joel Basman is the titular, and he is quite excellent in the role. Direction, photography and acting work wonderfully in unison, crating the "every frame a painting" we all want and love.
It would help being somewhat familiar with the actual written work of Kafka, but essentially the gist of it is that Kafka, prior to his work as a writer, worked as an insurance man; and the day-to-day of his life is used, episodically, to show what instead happens in his writings. So there is a part that shows the themes of The Metamorphosis, another that shows the themes of In The Penal Colony. (if you have not read some "Kafka Greatest Hits", you really fucking should)

Strong recommendation, but you'll need to find some way of watching it.

I watched the first 2 episodes and decided it was a season I wanted to hold off on and just binge the crap out of it lol So I'm going to wait until all of them are released and maybe take a personal day off to watch it. It's use it or lose it by July 1 so we'll see.

On a side note, Genevieve O'Reilly is so easy on the eyes to me. I think she plays Mon Moth beautifully. Every conversation she has in the show she portrays herself with class but you can see the worrisome and urgency at the same time. IDK. I just like watching her.
She has an elegant beauty about her and a strong presence. Plays the part well too of course. Just wait until episode 3 if you want to see her moves and looking goddamn amazing in motion.

Watched the first three episodes of andor last night. Really good stuff. And also just really nice to look at.

Pretty excited because they're dropping the next three episodes tonight. And the same the next 2 weeks. So the whole season will drop within a month.

I think each set of three episodes takes place over a year.
What are you discussing here. First three episodes of what?

i would go with Conclave first. You watch it, you admire it, you get on with your life.
The Substance, you watch it, you go in shock. You pick yourself up, you watch it again.
it's a bigger effort. The Conclave is an easier watch.

There was this one called Bite, IIRC out of New Zealand or Australia. Or I may have the two mixed up due to the one called Rippy or maybe Red. Basically about a Kangaroo. neither I would gather are worth investing the time into. Unless you want to be entertained about the badness of a movie as in Bite.
I had the unfortunate experience of seeing the movie before finding this channel. The new videos have spoiler alerts put into them. Or if it is in his opinion a decent movie. But cliff notes here.

Sorry had to look it up because I couldn't remember the name and the above comments reminded me of it.

The substance 10/10

Everything a good horror movie should have, a bit of nudity. Lot's of gore and dirt scenes. And good actors and actresses.
What a great movie with Demi Moore, margaret Qualley and Dennis Quad.

And i guess based on the theme what we see in reality, but took it to the extreme of course.
That some people get so insecure that they buy something obscure of the internet for body modification like synth oil, lip fillers, botox and more of that stuff. And then it all goes way wrong.

The substance 10/10
I find a perfect rating especially from you (someone deeply interested in science) kinda perplexing for this movie because the ending is as far from the realms of scientific possibility as possible.

With such massive mutations, the brain shouldn't be in a position to remain intact. The subject would lose all ability to think and become a mutated monster only capable of extreme mayhem wherever it lands. An ending with a massive showdown between the police/national guard/military would've been more "realistic".

I watched the first 3 episodes of The White Lotus S1. Not sure I see the appeal yet, but it's only 6 episodes so I'll see it through.
