So, i watched
Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind -
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0270288/reference/
.. did i not watch this already ?
I certainly remember the ending scene, with Rockwell and Roberts; but i don't remember most of the rest. At least, not in detail.
To be fully honest, i don't think this is a great film. I sat down first to watch A Most Wanted Man, but the moment i realized that Seymour Hoffman was in it, i decided i needed to give it full attention, so i changed to something easier to watch for 2AM.
I think Rockwell was trying to find an angle in a character that doesn't have one; both blessed by the luck of becoming a tv star, and a CIA assassin, his remark is "how lucky i am that this happened TO ME, A SIMPLE COUNTRY BOY". His conflict comes from being mundane, but somehow being given what he dreamed of, and being not cut for it.
Clooney as a director, has some vision, but hasn't got much skill. Ides Of March was good, but it does rely on a massive cast, and the casting of Confessions is quite a lot weaker. Rutger Hauer was good, but his character is just "average old spy guy". Same for Clooneys "average old CIA handler" and Roberts' "average doublecrossing agent".
I guess that, being American, they read the
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind book and thought wow, this guy we've grew up with on tv was actually a spy !! and that would make the film interesting. Well .. it doesn't, at least for me.
It's not all a loss. Drew Barrymore was good both as a character and as actress, Rockwell tried to make the best of every scene, visually the film is pleasant to the eyes, it's reasonably well paced, but i don't think it's got enough of a script to ever be considered memorable.
All in all,
7/10
