i watched
Il Posto ("The Sound Of Trumpets", but more accurately, "The Job" or "The Position") -
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0055320/reference/
this is the sort of stuff that
@zinfamous would like to sink his teeth in. It's not neorealism, but .. it is?
1961 B&W Italian-language film about the mysery of the late 50s economic boom in italy; Domenico is a young man from a small city outside of Milan, looking to get a job in a big corporation. He is subject to a series of baffling, humiliating tests, to assess if he is suitable for the position. While shy young Domenico is looking for friendship, maybe even love, the people around him care very little for him. He is eventually assigned a temporary position where he just sits on a chair, waiting for work that never comes. When the job finally arrives, it's clear to the protagonist that he is meaningless in the italian bureaucratic machine.
Directed by Ermanno Olmi, this is some of his best work, as the film is stronger visually than in plot or dialogue. You may remember my review of
Il Mestiere Delle Armi, which i criticized mostly because of the horrible photography.
Cinematographer Lamberto Caimi's career fell to the side when he started working in cheaper comedies, but Il Posto is certainly more interesting visually than, say, Solaris.
Would i recommend it to a foreigner? Probably. You need to accept that you'll be watching mostly some interesting camera work, and the subtle critique of italian society will go over your head.
