One area of internal tension as I understand it has been underinvestment in conventional domestic forces and security in favor of foreign shenanigans. A government that comes along and focuses on those instead and is less repressive would be a different kind of problem for the Israelis.
Are those foreign shenanigans where they funded things in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and Yemen?
I suppose they under invested in Iraq somehow, expected some AA to be used from there. Yet not a peep aside from some diplomatic cover. Given the role Iranian militias played in stopping ISIS, Iraq's non involvement so far is surprising me.

Can't really disagree with this article (particularly the bit about Trump)

An urgent message for Keir Starmer: anyone who still thinks Trump has even the remotest idea what he’s doing when confronting the big international questions of the day should study the alarming events of the past week. Whether he is selling out to Vladimir Putin, weaponising tariffs, botching a Gaza ceasefire or bullying neighbours, Trump is a total menace.

He's not a neo-con, he's not a warmonger trying to remodel the world according to an ideology (the way he's trying to remodel the US to suit himself) - he's simply dangerously out-of-his-depth and incompetent when it comes to global issues.

Does the human race get the leaders it deserves, I wonder? If we end up with armageddon will it be our own collective fault?

Yes I think the odds that Bibi Netanyahu ushers in an Israel friendly government at the point of JDAMs are infinitesimally small.

There is no mystery here. Netanyahu’s primary goal is to stay out of prison.

All top Israeli leaders wanted this war, not only Netanyahu. Former Israeli PM Naftali Bennet and Yair Lapid (leader of the opposition) criticized Netanyahu months ago for not going all out vs Iran in their earlier limited missile exchanges. Even if he wasnt going to jail he would still likely have attacked Iran.

History of Netanyahus warnings about Iran close to developing nukes going back to 1992 (when he said it was 3 to 5 years away from having nukes).

Only goes up to date of article (2015), but interesting history of his claims including testifying in front of Congress in 2002 that Saddams nonexistent nuclear program was in fact so advanced that the country was now operating “centrifuges the size of washing machines.”

We reported tonight on Channel 14:
A significant escalation — Israel is now actively working to destabilize the Iranian regime through a newly approved strike plan authorized by Defense Minister Katz and Prime Minister Netanyahu.

As part of the operation, regime targets in Tehran will now be attacked, accompanied by the mass evacuation of civilians from those areas as a means of applying pressure on the regime, in response to attacks on the Israeli home front.

The plan is designed to trigger a mass exodus of civilians from Tehran and serves as a powerful lever of pressure on the regime — in a way that could destabilize it. In this context, Defense Minister Katz's statement today can be understood as a message to Khamenei: “Tehran will be treated like Beirut.”

Today, in a meeting held by the Defense Minister in the command bunker with IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and the IDF General Staff, the operational details of the plan were finalized. The IDF Spokesperson issued its first Arabic-language announcement calling on civilians to evacuate areas near weapons sites in Tehran.

A security official told Channel 14 News: “Each day the plan will intensify and produce results. Today we struck the Iranian Ministry of Defense — additional targets will be attacked soon.”

Israel would be much much less likely to be this aggressive without US support.

Surface hit, or bunker busters?
Israel cannot bunker bust. So the answer determines if the United States is now flying missions over Iran or not.
Presumably too small to be underground nuclear...?

Reports of 'massive blast,' 2.5 magnitude earthquake in vicinity of Iran's Fordow nuclear plant

Israel has bunker busters but only up to the 5,000lb class of weapon since they don't possess strategic aviation that could deliver a heavier payload, like the MOP, to target. Fordow (at 90M depth under rock) is almost certainly beyond the reach of that class weapon and would be a challenge for the MOP but might be doable with multiple strikes in the same spot. The Iranians know all this and if the US started bombing we'd probably see a much different response like ballistic missile attacks on US facilities in the gulf, Saudi refineries exploding, and tankers getting sunk in the Hormuz.

Doing a Gaza to Tehran is surely going to win Iranian hearts and minds. The regime seems like it might not survive but whoo boy whatever comes after you're not gonna like.

We currently are defending and providing support.
We are currently ramping up for active participation.

Pretty sure the US is about to use "reasons" to officially and openly join the conflict and wipe out the Iranian Navy and then for shits and giggles send B2s to do the job the Iraelis cannot.

Probably some debate over radiation impact and how to mitigate it.

At the very least, it sticks with the Repulican theme of "let's throw a failed regime change party so we can create another batch of terrorists groups "

Just so I understand, Israel started a war with Iran to get a deal where Iran stops creating weapons grade uranium.

The same deal we had that was successful according to IAEA. Trump cancelled it just because the Negro put it in place.

We have a number of agendas converging. Netanyahu needs to stay out of prison and in power, Israeli hardliners think killing the Iranian regime is fantastic, and delaying Iranian enrichment progress buys a little more time for uh something. The first two certainly overlap in their desire to topple the regime as Bibi has looong desired and he hated JCPOA because it took this off the table. Trump was just too stupid to know better and played right in to the hands of GOP Iran hawks.

WSJ says the regime wants to restart negotiations with the US/Israel re: their nuclear program if attacks cease. Khamenei clearly not in a great position here and feeling the heat.
