Excited to start watching Dark Matter tonight on AppleTV - a sci fi parallel dimension type mindbender, based on a bestseller (like Silo & Foundation) - I gotta hand it to AppleTV, they have been killing it with quality sci fi series. So really looking forward to what is likely another good show. They don't put out a lot of shows but they have a great hit rate for good stuff.
so .. is it getting better?

I watched the first episode and it was kind of a drag. The actor is a problem. I'm not a fan of his. He's better playing villainous roles. But I have to say the cinematography was excellent. Really good cameras being used. Night scenes were lovely.

I wouldn't want to be Ken in that movie or that version of Ken in real life, no matter the benefits. It was a complete emasculation of men.

Why is it so hard for feminists to understand that truly capable women are fewer in numbers than men? I have a female HR Head and boy, is she domineering, completely irrational in her decision making and only concerned about looking good instead of solving HR issues. I regret seeing an email from her in my inbox. It's usually bad news for the employees. Plenty of other examples you can see for yourself in life, if you stopped giving women an overwhelming benefit of the doubt.

maybe the problem is you and your broken brain?

seriously--the life of men in the Barbie world was pretty dreadful, and that is the point--you're made to sympathize with Ken before he rebels, because he just wants to be a normal person. That's the fucking point. The film does not endorse the way the Kens exist in that world. Are you blind?

But the rest of the stuff...holy shit man. Get fixed.

Thank you.

But the theatrical release of the movie does not need to exist. Maybe a Director's Cut could be better.
The director's cut would just piss you off more due to your completely unbalanced view of women and men. Greta would include more things about the reality of the world, and that would upset you.

I like Greta. Lovely smile. Maybe I should check out the extra features and interviews.
I more admire Greta's talent and brainpower, but, you do you

can't possibly be worse

We know you hate all things not 1984 Lynch Dune and only if he does something Dune related you will like it But seriously, how could you decipher it's going to suck from that? You do know HBO makes some pretty good shows in general? Odds are higher than lower that it will be good. Maybe it won't be but give it a chance.

so .. is it getting better?

I saw the first two episodes last week. I think the third one is out today but haven't seen it yet. I think the sci fi premise is great, the show is not great but so far seems worth a watch to see where they go with it. I love sci fi so I don't mind giving shows a chance. It's not bad, but it doesn't feel amazing that is for sure. But worth my time to keep going, it interests me. The second episode has quite an ending that I did not see coming so looking forward to what that leads to plot-wise. Although I have an idea.

i didnt say that. I was just today on IMDb to see if Villeneuve was directing, there's not directing credits (it will likely be a per-episode pool of directors, as most shows are these days) so there's a good chance that it will be better.

See, the thing about the new Dune that really, really pisses me off is that Villeneuve had a chance to actually *improve* on the Lynch version. He had the time, he had the budget, he had the pick of actors, the technology, all he had to do was acknowledge that the Lynch version EXISTS.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5177120/reference/

So so film obviously directed by Guy Ritchie; not as good as The Gentlemen, all the shooty bits are good, all the 'splosions, the establishing shots, the sets, the costumes, the casting, Henry Cavill with moustache and Sten gun is awesome, maybe even the quips when killing Nazis, but the bits with the acting and the talking are absolute shit. Otherwise, decent film, a bit aimless in its plot, not serious enough to be a representation of the IRL covert ops unit the film is inspired by, not comedic enough to be a pure comedy, just some fun mindless action that could have been better if he had a bit of help on the script.

Reginald the Vampire - SyFy - no rating.

Somehow I missed the first season. Watching the second and as the name implies, it's . . . how do you raise "silly" to an exponent?

Syfy has another show in a very similar vein that stars Steve Buscemi (Miracle Workers). I watched a few eps and it wasn't bad but I couldn't get into it. I'll have to see about this one.

It's always funny when supposed fans of a traditionally "woke" show complain that the latest episodes are woke.

Grr! The new Star Trek is woke! Grr! Woke X-Men!

Dr Who about ten years ago had a lizard woman - human woman relationship with a dommy dynamic and they weren't particularly subtle about it! The format of most of the episodes is "wouldn't it be nice if dickhead authoritarians stopped doing shitty things", "why is it that every time I come back to the Planet Earth, I find them doing fucking stupid things to harm each other?" and "The Doctor is going to find a solution to this that doesn't involve violence because violence is never the answer"!

Another candidate for people complaining about the latest entry being "woke" I encountered recently was the 'Ghost in the Shell' franchise, traditionally being about an era where humanity can simply buy the prosthetic body they want and the CEO of a Japanese company walks around in this body and a super stereotypical Texan accent:

dude, that link is THE EXPRESS. That's what's relevant, and why i posted it. This time it's so bad that even paper newspapers are attacking it.
"supposed fans" seems to imply that we're not actually fans, you know, those youtubers who has 3-hour videos about idk audiobooks of the Troughton era, naah bro those ARE NOT FAAAAAANS, no "fans" is only what my convenience dictates, if they agree with whatever slop previous viewers are complaining about then yeah, those are "fans".

FYI the big mommy milkers lizardgirl was already a shit character back when Capaldi was doctor, but it was a minor character with not a lot of screen time, fans were more willing to forgive.

.. but, you know, nobody and i mean NOBODY complained about Cpt Jack Harkness back 20 years ago during the Tennant reboot. Do you remember the Red Letter Media part of the first Star Wars Review, where they can't find a way to describe the CHARACTER of Amidala, of Qui Gon, etc ?
Because see, Jack is carefree, Jack is Heroic. He is selfless, he's got enthusiasm, but can get sidetracked because he's very, very horny. He's a mean motherfucker when the chips are down, but he can also be patient, and caring.

This doctor's character traits are .. he's gay, he's VERY gay, and oh yeah he's also fabulous. Did i mention he's gay?
Idk, maybe if you took a franchise like John Wick but decided to force comedy into it, or maybe if Die Hard all the sudden needs more grim violence, people would complain about the writing because the characters are being forced.

"Woke" specifically means BAD. We're nearing South Park levels of the word having no resemblance to what it meant before, because nobody anywere outside of Pink News uses it to signify "people fighting teh oPPression". What they mean is "gay nonsense", with a highlight on the word nonsense. I mean, you feel the need to interject on sUppoSEd FanS so surely you know who midshipman Alonso is, what special he stars in, (who is the special guest for that show, who is The Doctor for that series, how old the Doctor is in that particular episode, which constellation is Galifrey seated in ?) etc, and there is no mention at all of him being a sexually diverse character, *except* for The Doctor figuring it out just by looking at him mope, and of course we all know what happens next, because we're fans. I'm sure you don't even need to google it to find what pro-LGBT action was written in that episode that took ZERO complaints from "the fans".

The new Indiana Jones got ruined coz of this. I couldn't get myself to finish it. Saw only maybe 40 minutes of it. LGBTQ stuff isn't jarring when it's something like in the first season of Sense8. But then the same team overdid it in the 2nd season. It's like they don't know when to stop turning the dial coz there's no limit and no labels and they just keep turning the dial over and over.

If any filmmaker is reading this, characters need to feel like they organically belong in the story. Not hamfisted into it.

dude, that link is THE EXPRESS. That's what's relevant, and why i posted it. This time it's so bad that even paper newspapers are attacking it.

The Express is like Fox, GB News, The Daily Mail and tonnes of other trash news sources that regularly and seriously use the word 'woke' because it fires up their audience. That is the term's sole purpose as far as the right-wing media is concerned, for their audience to hate the same things they do.

I'm not stating what I think makes a "real fan" or anything like that, my aim was to make two points:

1 - Anyone who has regularly watched say Dr Who and only just noticed the kind of content that the right wing regularly labels as "woke" (minority representation, justice/equality for all, for example) must have watched it with their brain switched off. I couldn't care less if they still very much enjoy what little they get from it, good for them as far as I'm concerned, but to not notice these regular themes in Dr Who is like being an avid reader of Jesus's teachings in the New Testament and yet not to have noticed that there's some moral messaging going on in there. The kind of person who's opinion I therefore wouldn't put much stock in on such topics.

2 - Who in their right mind trusts the Daily Express's viewpoint on anything, let alone on a topic that the Express et al evidently considers itself to be an enemy of (ie. wokeness)? Furthermore, the article makes for hilarious reading, a fair summary is basically four random people online didn't like it: HOLY SHIT, STOP THE PRESS! The BBC will surely call an emergency meeting on the strength of this news article! Who knows whether the people quoted even exist or if they've shown any enthusiasm for Dr Who previously and just like to bitch about anything they think is "woke": Hence my use of the word 'supposed'. In any case, the article is a win for the Express because they will have succeeded in riling up their readers who are clearly too dim to recognise a level of journalistic quality that is so low that it may as well cite "my mate down the pub who said he knew it FOR DEFINITE".

As for your comments about what wokeness means, whether it's specifically one thing or another thing or essentially meaningless, I'm not sure what your overall point was but I have the feeling that "woke" has the kind of personal meaning to you that the Express et al hopes to achieve.

@DigDog - Man, you do NOT know a marketing opportunity when you see one. I can virtually guarantee you there will be a second season and it will be called Shogun. It might take place 10000 years from now in a galaxy far, far away but it's coming.
well .. you were right; and i was wrong.

i have watched a single episode of Star Trek Discovery, and .. well, despite the vulgar excess of diversity, the show is actually quite good. The visuals, photography, CGI, sets and costumes are excellent. The acting is ok and the plot, script and dialogue is also good. I'm gonna give it a shot to the whole 5th season and maybe, if it doesnt suck (idk maybe i got the-one good episode) i'll backtrack to S01.

It starts out good. The first season is actually not bad. But then you get tired of looking at the same sets being re-used over and over which kinda makes the show look cheap. I think I watched till S02. Started S03 (with Spock I think?) but the first episode couldn't hold my interest. I grew tired of the actress Sonica (Sunika?) too. Nothing against her but her character could be better. My favorite is actually the chief science officer. Now that's a mesmerizing character, the way he speaks. The villain(s) in the first season were awesome too. It gave me hope that they can give us great Star Trek shows again. Sadly, didn't last that long.
