Sticking AI right into search seems like a bad idea for search engines to do. Imagine all the extra compute resources that is taking and most people who are doing a search are probably not interested in the AI answer and just skip over it. What they should do is make it an option when you search. Ex: do a regular search or do an AI query.

I have noticed though that the "AI summary" that Google now gives - for _some_ searches, but not all (and I don't know why it does it sometimes but not others - maybe it's how you word the search?) - seems to be pretty unreliable, to the point where I scroll past it. When searching for information on topics I've already read a lot about, that AI summary seems to be rather inaccurate, and I personally wouldn't trust it.

I noticed that too, it's very inconsistent. And yeah I've also seen some that were hilariously wrong.

Yeah, one claimed that the presence of certain physical symptoms meant you almost certainly had cancer. When if you looked at the actual sources the search turned up, they made it very clear there were common benign conditions that could also cause the same symptoms.

With AI replacing Search Engines, web traffic via search results is collapsing.
And websites / businesses the depend on SEO traffic are shrinking / vanishing as a result.

The Business Insider Bloodletting
A staggering 21% of Business Insider's staff was laid off Thursday - and internal messages obtained by Status captured the staff furry as SEO traffic dries up and A.I. eats the internet.

AI is 'breaking' entry-level jobs that Gen Z workers need to launch careers, LinkedIn exec warns - He likened the disruption to the decline of manufacturing in the 1980s.

Key Insights:

* Automation of Entry-Level Tasks: AI is increasingly handling tasks such as data entry, basic coding, and customer support, leading to a reduction in entry-level opportunities across sectors like IT, law, and retail .
* Experience Paradox: Employers now often prefer candidates with AI proficiency over those with traditional experience, creating a paradox where new graduates are expected to have skills typically acquired on the job .
* Shift in Skill Requirements: By 2030, it's anticipated that 70% of job requirements will change, emphasizing soft skills such as communication, creativity, and adaptability over routine technical tasks .

Opportunities for Adaptation:

* AI Literacy: Developing skills in AI tools, prompt engineering, and data literacy can provide a competitive edge.
* Soft Skills Development: Enhancing abilities in communication, problem-solving, and adaptability remains crucial, as these are areas where humans outperform AI .
* Continuous Learning: Engaging in lifelong learning and upskilling can help navigate the evolving job landscape.

As AI continues to reshape the workforce, embracing adaptability and focusing on uniquely human skills will be essential for career progression in the coming years.

That's coz they are not letting the AI think hard enough in order to minimize computation time and cost. The quicker the response, the more accuracy it will sacrifice. One way they could improve their search results is to create a desktop client, download some data to it in encrypted form (so their data isn't abused) and then use the PC's available computation power to refine the results according to the user's preference. This would also make AI PCs more desirable and relevant.

One way to circumvent the requirement of a desktop client is to use WASM to do the required computation inside the browser so the full available power of the PC can be tapped without much effort from the user.

It would take a _lot_ for me to trust an AI summary of anything of any importance (like health issues). Would much rather read the primary sources for myself. Those AI summaries _sound_ very plausible and reasonable, because they are worded so as to be a direct answer to whatever question one asked, but it seems dangerous to trust them.
