If you're not familiar with ChatGPT & other AI systems, there's some pretty crazy advances in technology that have come out in the past year. I don't see AI as sweeping replacement for humans, but rather as yet another technology enhancement tool, sort of like how computers gave us the ability to easily edit documents with the backspace key after a hundred years of using typewriters. One of the coolest things is the practical application of the technology. For example, Adobe has an AI-powered voice recording enhancement system available in beta. Try playing the stock sound & then hit the Enhance Speech toggle switch to see the difference:

One of the things I'm really excited for is how it's going to impact animation, such as anime. Animation is an incredibly expensive & time-consuming process, but thanks to modern tools, you can now do stuff like this: (behind-the-scenes)

This is already leading to some really wild styling ideas, such as transforming live-action video into painterly effects, sort of like A Scanner Darkly. This is from EbSynth:

Very excited to see what comes down the pipe as this technology matures! It hasn't worked out too well for everyone so far, but there's some pretty promising stuff out there!

Played around with some of these tools and it's kinda crazy how it works. Using ChatGPT feels more like you're just using a search engine and it's tempting to think that all it's doing is googling what you are asking and then formulating it into an answer, but when you actually start to realize that it's not actually how it works, but rather it's AI, it's pretty impressive. At this point I don't see this replacing jobs but it can be used as a tool. You could in theory engineer a product with it. I was asking it questions like how do I go about sending a payload into low earth orbit using a catapult and it actually went through all the calculations of how fast the catapult has to get the item moving, how much fuel is needed to circularize the orbit, etc. It's incredible that you can just ask it these completely random technical questions and it will actually have an answer.

The photo generating ones are pretty crazy too. I keep assuming it's just using google image search and then mashing results together, but don't think it works that way either, i think it literally knows what the words mean, what those objects would look like, and then generates it, which is quite wild. Those are also the funnest to put the most weird things into to see what it comes up with.

Screenshots and quotes shared by The Verge saw the Bing chatbot accusing users of trying to harm it. The chatbot also allegedly claimed that it spied on developers by accessing their webcams. It further said that workers were sleeping, flirting, and arguing during office hours.

60 Minutes had a piece on chatting up AI last night, chat-bots is I think what they called them/it. Are you gonna ask the bot what pronouns it prefers?

I think it's creepy. If I'm going to do online chat I want a human on the other end. Should be able to tell which it is. I've seen lots of automated responses. Humans are more intuitive.

They interviewed a guy I think they said was CEO at Microsoft (???). Bing is the thing. It seems creepy. Leslie Stahl did the interview. Seems that if you chat with a bot for long enough it can and sometimes does come up with some whack stuff. They gave a few examples. The bot can get downright nasty and threatening. MS guy says they can fix those things quickly, in like less than a day and have done so on occasion.

The chatbots are searching constantly and synthesizing, juggling, spitting out responses, but they make erroneous judgements concerning the nature of some of the info they're processing. They are not good at dealing with lies and propaganda. It really is a messy scene the internet. Bring your intelligence.

On the worrying side of the fence, the "A.I. stole my job" posts are starting to roll in. As someone who enjoys writing, yikes:

Reddit: Lost all my content writing contracts. Feeling hopeless as an author.

I have had some of these clients for 10 years. All gone. Some of them admitted that I am obviously better than chat GPT, but $0 overhead can't be beat and is worth the decrease in quality.

I am also an independent author, and as I currently write my next series, I can't help feel silly that in just a couple years (or less!), authoring will be replaced by machines for all but the most famous and well known names.

I think the most painful part of this is seeing so many people on here say things like, "nah, just adapt. You'll be fine."

Adapt to what??? It's an uphill battle against a creature that has already replaced me and continues to improve and adapt faster than any human could ever keep up.

I'm 34. I went to school for writing. I have published countless articles and multiple novels. I thought my writing would keep sustaining my family and I, but that's over. I'm seriously thinking about becoming a plumber as I'm hoping that won't get replaced any time remotely soon.

We've seen product dumbing-down happen in all areas, especially food, but it also applies to writing:

Good stories don't sell, sadly. The market is entirely quantity over quality, which is not my shtick. I like to write deep, introspective, though-provoking stories, but those aren't the stories that sell far and wide. Dumbed-down series--that's what really sells and makes money. I just don't have it in me to churn out AI-made nonsense. I would genuinely rather be a plumber and just write as a hobby on the side. I just very much didn't see this coming a few years ago.

Frankly, I'm amazed at how many non-nerdy people are adopting ChatGPT. I have IT clients & friends in lots of different industries...real-estate people are using it to write listings, business people are using it to generate custom art for their presentations, even Zoom is using it to do things like automatically write meeting notes:

In a perfect world, automation and AI would do all the tedious jobs that no one wants to do but that process would also make every product/service cheaper because it's now being automated. So instead of paying $100+/mo for every bill it would be like $5/mo only.

Unfortunately the fact that we need a job to survive and our costs of living will keep going up instead of down is not going to change, so this is concerning. Outsourcing, automation, and now AI. The number of jobs continues to go down. You know it's bad when even the prestigious companies like Google are joining the mass layoff trend.

In the end, the more secure jobs are going to be the manual ones like construction though. Even if prefab or 3D printed buildings takes off there is going to be a lot of manual labour involved for quite some time I think. But even those will eventually be in trouble. The only way to adapt is going to figure out how to live with less money. I see off grid living become a bigger trend, until the government cracks down on that.

I've used AI (chat gpt), etc a few times at work (IT) already. I find it invaluable for certain things, and frankly I trust it more than most of those I work with.

I had a discussion with a programmer yesterday, a PHD in computer science, all around geek with unlimited range.

He went on about how useful ChatGPT is for programming. It can predict where you're going while you are coding and save you tons of work. For instance, it might predict that the next several lines of code you plan to type in look like so-and-so, and offer them to you. Or maybe a dozen lines. I've never used anything like that, have had to actually type in my code.

I work in Visual Foxpro pretty exclusively. There's stuff out there for that, I guess, but all I have been using is BEAUTIFY, which is not predictive but spruces up your code, with some possible tweaks you can make, i.e. your preferences. Well, VFP does complain if it detects errors of certain kinds, before you actually run your code.

If you google it you have to sift through all the BS, if you ask Chat GPT you just get a straight answer. If you post in a forum or even just Google it you just get a bunch of condescending people "Why are you doing it that way?" "Why don't you just do NNN?" "You shouldn't reinvent the wheel there's already a program that does that" etc. Getting programming help online is probably one of the most frustrating things. I won't ask ChatGPT to full out write the code though, I prefer to write it myself so I fully understand it, but it is useful for knowing how to do specific things that would otherwise be annoying to look up.

I learned a new trick yesterday, you can add "limit prose" to your AI prompt & it will SIGNIFICALTY cut down the verbiage about 80% of the time! Super nice when you just need a quick, concise answer!
