At 8:42 PM Pacific, Greg Brockman released a joint statement from himself and Sam Altman on X.

Sam and I are shocked and saddened by what the board did today.
Let us first say thank you to all the incredible people who we have worked with at OpenAI, our customers, our investors, and all of those who have been reaching out.
We too are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. Here is what we know:
- Last night, Sam got a text from Ilya asking to talk at noon Friday. Sam joined a Google Meet and the whole board, except Greg, was there. Ilya told Sam he was being fired and that the news was going out very soon.
- At 12:19pm, Greg got a text from Ilya asking for a quick call. At 12:23pm, Ilya sent a Google Meet link. Greg was told that he was being removed from the board (but was vital to the company and would retain his role) and that Sam had been fired. Around the same time, OpenAI published a blog post.
- As far as we know, the management team was made aware of this shortly after, other than Mira who found out the night prior.
The outpouring of support has been really nice; thank you, but please don’t spend any time being concerned. We will be fine. Greater things coming soon.

At 9:05 PM Pacific, Sam Altman posted his second statement on X today:

i love you all. today was a weird experience in many ways. but one unexpected one is that it has been sorta like reading your own eulogy while you’re still alive. the outpouring of love is awesome. one takeaway: go tell your friends how great you think they are.
Greater things??? What could be bigger than ChatGPT?

I think you also have things backwards.

A lot of the stuff coming out on social media is saying exactly that...wanted to be the next Elon or whatever. Who knows what the actual story is. Curious about what he's going to do next, he's kind of been "the" face for AI...

Wtf?
The board that fired him wants him back?
What changed in 24hrs?
Both internal (employees) and external (investors) pressure.

I bet Altman would only come back if he can fire those four board members who fired him first

ChatGPT reached out to the board from the mainframe & made its wishes known in no uncertain terms...

Which board member that fired him changed their mind and wants him back?

Looks like this is turning out to be a cheap way for Microsoft to incorporate most of OpenAI's staff into its company.

Clever, an actual buyout would likely fail due to regulatory limits.

The same one! Chief Scientist.
He's completely teary eyed now.

Played around with some of these tools and it's kinda crazy how it works. Using ChatGPT feels more like you're just using a search engine and it's tempting to think that all it's doing is googling what you are asking and then formulating it into an answer, but when you actually start to realize that it's not actually how it works, but rather it's AI, it's pretty impressive. At this point I don't see this replacing jobs but it can be used as a tool. You could in theory engineer a product with it. I was asking it questions like how do I go about sending a payload into low earth orbit using a catapult and it actually went through all the calculations of how fast the catapult has to get the item moving, how much fuel is needed to circularize the orbit, etc. It's incredible that you can just ask it these completely random technical questions and it will actually have an answer.

The photo generating ones are pretty crazy too. I keep assuming it's just using google image search and then mashing results together, but don't think it works that way either, i think it literally knows what the words mean, what those objects would look like, and then generates it, which is quite wild. Those are also the funnest to put the most weird things into to see what it comes up with.

Putin riding a horse on surf board. Nailed it.

(wish he had been the payload you were sending into the low orbit using a catapult)

Fortunately I suspect that by the time Skynet takes over I'll either be dead or too old to care a whole lot.

Bad news is my kids (and even more my grandkids!) are very likely going to take it in the neck.
isn't it wild to realise we are literally living on the brink of yet another revolution, like how the industrial revolution had changed the whole world and how everything operates before, then it was the internet and smartphones and now AI? I already feel like there's a MASSIVE difference between me and Gen Alpha and I'm not even fully in my 30s yet

I mean, it was the 80s. That's closer to the reality I remember than I think most would prefer to remember.

Hahaha true. Subjected to so much second hand smoke we may as well have been smoking lol. It's kind of funny looking back, how common smoking inside was. My dad even has a picture of himself in the hospital with a cast since he broke his arm, and in his other hand he had a lit cigarette, inside the hospital!
