I've had the champion 3200w dual fuel generator for 6 years and still going strong. Use it for dry camping (pretty rare) and when our power goes out (which is frequent). I love the dual fuel propane/gas. This should last you a good while.
The duel fuel ones are nice, I was looking at those originally as I would just go propane and not worry about it going bad if not used. The one I got is only gas though. For $250 can't complain. I will just need to get into the habit of cycling it and putting some fuel stabilizer in my fuel. No sense in having the generator if I don't keep fuel on hand. One downside of me going electric for my snow blower and lawn mower is it won't really get used otherwise.
Also decided to order a bunch of parts so I can revisit my generator plug idea for my shed. Rather than have a 120v inlet that powers a PSU which powers the solar battery, and then inverter powers all the plugs around the house, I will setup the inverter so it just outputs to a twist lock plug, then have a generator plug that also outputs to a twistlock plug. The electrical panel that the inverter feeds will then plug into one of those plugs. So to run the house on generator I would just move the plug over. Of course a transfer switch would be the proper way but I have limited space on that wall. This will make more sense since it will allow me to actually use the full capacity of the generator. I have a 40 amp feed from the shed going to the house already.
We really don't get outages that often here but it's one of those things that's nice to be prepared for when it does happen. Between the solar power and the generator I shouldn't have any situation where I can't power the important stuff in my house even if power goes out for days.
With this setup I may also go with a smaller battery bank for my server room now. If power is out for more than a few hours and solar is not cutting it, I would then go start the generator.
