From a value perspective, it's bad. Costs more than the XTX, which may see a performance improvement with new drivers at some point in the future (fine wine drivers). Only reason to get the 4080 is if all you care about is raytracing or play some game a lot that is known to have issues with Radeons.
Still, it seems too have enough RAM for several years for 4k, AAA titles one would imagine. Otherwise, allot of gamers < 16GB will have to get by with DLSS2 and/or lower quality settings. I'd think I’d buy the 7900 XTX over the 4080, the later isn’t worth the extra $200 - not as good value as you point out.

I was looking at upgrading from GTX 1080...

Thought 6950xt is good but then saw the 7800xt is better. Both seem to be more than 100% improvement.. generally 150-200%.

But I need one that's under 12.5 inches length.. any recommendations?

Mostly just play Elder Scrolls Online, Cyberpunk and Witcher 3.

Occasionally Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind.

I think you mean 7900 XT. 7800 XT isn't out yet.

That's 12.4 inches.

Yeah sorry 7900xt but was sort of waiting for 7800xt too..

Anyways was looking at 3 models..

The Sapphire nitro, Powercolor basic and Powercolor Hellhound.

Generally what is the feeling.. drivers good and no real crashes?? I saw someone reporting crashes in witcher 3 but that was 3 months ago.

I would prefer the Nitro+ with the Vapor-X chamber. Don't own one so can't say anything about the drivers.

Just a small update here, I have been getting intermittent crashing in various games, and after troubleshooting off and on, I suspect that my video card is borderline unstable, particularly when under load for a long time. I have submitted a ticket with Sapphire and their RMA service.

Typically the issue will happen randomly in COD MWII, game will just crash with a steamhip.exe error. I have also had ETQW crash to desktop after a while. I have also seen in earlier driver revisions, Starcraft 2 cause driver timeouts, as could SWTOR if I played long enough.

I have noticed that reducing the GPU boost clock in afterburner recently has made it more stable though. Anyway, I am hoping that Sapphire / Athlonmicro are able to offer an advanced RMA service of some sort.

On a side note, I suspect that some of these new top tier cards, particularly the 7900XTX models with 3 8pin connectors and probably ALL RTX 4090 cards, are simply being pushed too far, too close to the limits of their silicon. One of my friends has a 4090 and he gets a lot of crashing when we play BF2042, and has to downclock the card.

Haha. Well today I was shipped a replacement card, should arrive shortly next week I think. I opted for the advanced RMA but had to make a deposit.

To anyone with a 7900 XTX:
In the tuning section of Adrenaline what's the lowest you can set the power limit? -10%? -15%?

Posting an update here regarding my Sapphire Nitro+ 7900XTX: I was able to do an advanced RMA, which went pretty smoothly. I had to pay a $500 deposit via paypal, but was promptly shipped a replacement. I then sent my original card to them, and I got my refund.

My only complaints are that I had to pay for the return shipping, (no paid label provided) and that when I got my refund from the deposit, it wasn't quite the full $500, apparently due to paypal fees. Overall the new card has been working great so far, I just wish I wasn't out the time and some money for shipping and fees. That said, I suppose it could have been much worse, especially if I hadn't done the advanced RMA and had to wait a while.

I've got reference 7900xt from PowerColor running on Linux. It's installed in a pretty old ThreadRipper 1950X system with ReBAR support, so some of the issues below might be related to an old platform rather than the GPU.

There are problems with the kernel driver, unfortunately, when using 2+ 4k monitors. They are working on them but right now I would not recommend using a mainline kernel for that purpose. I am managing with a custom kernel but sometimes there are hangs (not often).

The userspace driver - mesa - is great, though. They recently worked on aco (the Vulkan (and OpenGL in the future) shader compiler) support for VOPD (dual-issue on RDNA3), but even without it when you default to wave64 the hardware uses the dual-issue capability (with the possible occupancy problems inherent to wave64, applied).

Thanks to the kernel problems I understand the issues with high idle power usage on navi31 in general. The hardware supports memory reclocking for up to two displays but not more - you should not expect lower idle usage for 3+ monitors due to hardware limitations. Even with just 2 monitors there are issues as the hardware tries not to disturb the display as it tries to change the clock during vblank (?). This might also cause problems with high refresh rates (240Hz+).

It's possible these problems are all already fixed with the Windows driver, except the 3+ monitor idle power usage. I can be proven wrong, though.

Even single display idle power usage is not fixed on Windows drivers either. 4K 120Hz TV = 100W+ idle.
But others say it depends on your display. I haven't tested with others.

XFX 7900 XTX - 4K 60Hz TV = 44w idle and fans off

Well, just picked up this:

XFX Speedster MERC310 AMD Radeon RX 7900XT Black Gaming

It's not due to the 7th (Amazon is on vacation???). I'll put up a post on my impressions after it comes in. Just realized the metal backing is SILVER - that's going to mess with my all black build :-\

Don't complain! You are already lucky to be able to afford it, unlike many here.
What? I can't afford an RTX 4090 - I'm not an ATOT baller .

Yes, it's a nice card, just pointing out a first world problem. Anyway, bought my 1070 six years and two weeks ago - apparently another birthday gift. When I mentioned that, my wife allowed me to up my budget from $600 to $800 given how long I kept it, with a bit of grousing about the stupid prices of video cards these days. So I am stuck with holding on to this for 5+ years . I was going to wait for the RX 7800XT, but rumors point to a less than stellar card, unless AMD uses a cut down N31 GPU instead of an N32 GPU.

I cry poverty, but have been able to keep my computer more up to date over the past 4 years than the previous 8 - so I am very happy.

Actually it isn't. "Select displays" for example doesn't include any of the 4K 120Hz displays in my house.
Correct.

its fixed for some combinations but not all.

Everyone i've seen with TV's hooked up still had high consumption.

So, update. Having a number of problems. Random stuttering in three different games. Crysis Remastered, Borderlands 3 World War Z and RE4 (though the latter is microstuttering). One older game wont play anymore, which is sad because myself, brother and two nephews we just getting back into it. Updated to newest drivers, no joy. I used DDU before installing. Then I used AMD's driver cleaner to uninstall the whole Adrenaline software install and then used device manager to install the driver alone (suggestion from some Redditors). Everything else in the system is up to date and was running fine b4 the new GPU install (visuals, and average frame rates are outstanding).

Quick comp pron pic before I blow a gasket and return the card for something else:

Z-Bar is genius! Stupid grey Noctuas will need to be replaced eventually - saving a few bucks for this level or ugly wasn’t worth it
