Make sure to stress test it and check the hotspot temps. Also, I think the XTX needs to be installed in a certain way for the vapor chamber to work correctly (don't remember the details).
I have it installed standard in a Phanteks full tower. My SOP for may years when using AMD GPUs is to under-volt them after initial testing. Stable so far at 95% voltage and 95% power limit. Hotspot is 81c after TS xtreme run with a score of good. Defaults with max 115% power limit scored excellent but hotspot was 93c. That's a big temp swing for performance I don't even need. Especially for a single run. I'll get it dialed in so hotspot never sees 85c while doing long gaming sessions during the dog days of summer.

For what I paid it's a bang for buck champ. The only thing that could have made it even better is a multi bios switch.

OK, fair enough. But you do have some barely usable backup PC, right? Coz not having one is going to make you absolutely miserable if your primary system suddenly decides to give up the ghost.
I'm more concerned with breaking something when building the new rig. This old hardware is still rock solid. For now.

I think you are speaking about people side mounting the initial batches of the XTX which seemed to help with hotspot temps.

In particular it was certain reference cards only. There were batches where the vapor chamber on the reference cooler wasn't working right.

Now this is exciting. Hope RDNA4 also has these blower cards. I like slim cards.

In a way I am horrified. I certainly hope they stick with 8 pin options in the future, and don't start forcing new melty/flimsy connectors on us.

Seconded. I realize the comment doesn't add much but it has to be said. 12VHPWR connectors, in their latest incarnation, might be okay-ish for midrange and lower cards, but they do not have enough power headroom to handle high-end cards.

But melty connectors mean RMA rejection, and a excuse to sell another one. (sarcasm)

But i think the gpu vendors knew about this and pushed for it.

Yeah, hopefully they don't go that route. If they do, well, I don't mean to get political, but hopefully they all get investigated by the FTC or whoever and things get fixed.

I've never understood the need for the 8pin connector. It just adds 2 more ground (black) wires and that doesn't enable the power (yellow) wires the ability to handle more amperage.
If they had made the power wires a larger gauge at the same time, it would make sense, but they didn't.
So since the 3 power wires are the same size as the ground wires they can't handle any more current than a 6pin connector could.

I was curious so I looked it up a bit. Here's the TL;DR
  • officially the 6-pin connector has only 2 guaranteed +12V pins, the third one can be +12V or Not Connected. Also, one of the ground pins represented in many online schematics is actually a sense pin.
  • the 8-pin connector guarantees 3x +12V pins and adds 1x sense pin and 1x ground pin
  • in real world PSUs can offer +12V on the third pin of the 6-pin connector, all modern PSUs offer 8-pin connectors that can be used for 6-pin connections instead.
So what the 8-pin connector does is to guarantee the third +12V pin and also introduce extra sensing so that components know what type of connectors are completing the circuit.
