Using a Linux distro with MDADM is really the easiest way to go. I’d never consider FreeNAS... For anything really... I mean, you can do everything better by using straight FreeBSD if you want to go the ZFS route.
Linux/MDADM will allow you to use Frankenstein parts and roll your own storage...
If you are going to be provided, FREE OF CHARGE, a product for review, I see no issue with certain stipulations being enforced.

What’s with all the price angst? I bought a Monster Voodoo 1 in 1998ish for $350 which comes to ~$530 in today’s dollars with inflation of 2.15%. That is still less than the RTX 2070 MSRP of $499.
