Yup, don't want to put much money into upgrading 10 older computers to get by for another year or two. Pretty amazing that an RX 580 comes in at almost the same price as a GT 710, lol. Any suggestions for cards that don't require a PCI-E connector?
4th gen Intel Haswell CPUs. No gaming, just cheap cards to upgrade from Intel integrated graphics as it doesn't meet minimum requirement for an imaging app. GT 710 works fine, just seeing what other dirt-cheap options with better performance there might be.
Any ideas on what the best performance/price is on used $10-20 full-height graphics cards?
Nvidia GT 710 tends to run for $20, but I see AMD R7 250 is close to $10 and R9 350 is $17. Seeing if there's any other better options out there.
I was looking at the HP FX900 Pro 2 TB NVMe which is $108, but it's been a long while since I've bought an SSD. Any suggestions on if there is a better alternative at this time? This is going into an older i5-8400 computer, so aiming for best value.
I'm running a 1TB Samsung 860 Pro Sata SSD as my boot drive, and am curious if the current generation of DRAM-less m2 NVM.e SSDs have advanced enough to be considered an overall better option as a boot drive. I have a spare 1TB Western Digital SN530 NVM.e SSD I was going to use as a storage...
Most desktop computers now come with a USB-C port, but I'm finding it hard to find any info on how many amps they can output for charging smartphones. If it's not advertised to be higher, is it just assumed it can still only output 500mA?
And are there aftermarket motherboards that have USB-C...
I am buying from eBay, and they do work in my HP PCs. They're not fake unless they can trick CPU-Z into reporting incorrect info and frequencies as well. I am assuming the fakes are just relabeling the top heat spreader.
All I can surmise is Intel produced a newer batch of i5-4690 CPUs from...
I've been buying used CPUs to upgrade older Haswell PCs, and came across i5-4690 CPUs that will only work in HP-branded PCs. They don't work in Asus motherboard, MSI motherboard, Lenovo PC...all with latest firmware and will accept other i5-4690. I checked with the seller, and sure enough, the...
He's right in that some platforms do have issues trying to populate all RAM slots. My Gigabyte Intel Haswell boards (Z87 and B85) have issues resuming from sleep with all 4 RAM slots populated.
I've had issues with resuming from sleep using all 4 RAM slots on my Core i5-4670K@4.5Ghz with Gigabyte Z87 chipset motherboard. With 2x4GB DDR3, there's no problems. Once I go 4x4GB, sometimes I can't resume from sleep...the system turns on and then powers off in a couple seconds. I'm just...
Is there a way to determine whether an older PC will be able to support bootable PCIe nVME?
Bummer, that's what I had in mind, lol. On a 500GB Samsung 860 EVO 2.5" SATA currently, and was going to go to a 500GB PNY XLR8 NVMe (Phison E12). Doesn't sound like it's worth the bother modding the...
Are you able to boot off of your NVMe SSD with your 4790k setup? I have a Haswell setup too, and my assumption is I'll need to use some kind of bootloader off of a different drive to use the NVMe SSD as my OS drive.
I see M.2 NVME to PCIe riser cards on Amazon for as little as $8, or $9 with heatsink. Any reason to pay more for better reliability or performance? Or are they pretty much all the same?
He also didn't mention you'll need a power adapter if you want to actually use the slimline DVD burner after the PSU swap.
As a side note, what happened to PSU deals? Used to be able to get quality PSUs for <$30AR. I guess they disappeared when mail-in rebates disappeared.
