I got fed up and parted it out in favor of all new stuff. Thanks for your input everyone. In 20 years of building, I've never had a @%$#!&%!!! like this one
Went with
Intel i5 12600k
Gigabyte Aorus B760 Elite AX
32gb Corsair DDR5 5600mhz
1tb Hynix Gold P31 M.2
...and the EVGA 650w power supply...
Only the single M.2
Although I'm considering taking the M2 out altogether and plugging in an Old Fashioned spinning drive just to see if that is an issue
F3 bios actually.... the original system was a 6th gen i5 CPU on a Gigabyte Z170X Gaming 3 mobo. She uses the PC for school so it had to be reliable. It started randomly freezing every few days or so which is what prompted the upgrade.
The upgrade initially was just the CPU and motherboard...
Well, some dummy forgot that he actually had a brand spanking new 650 watt EVGA sitting in the closet. So I plugged that into the whole system and fired it up and still got the same freeze so now I know it's not the power supply. I am out of ideas so I think it's time to gut the system and start...
I don't overclock so whatever speed DDR4 3000mhz runs.
Yes, I tried a Linux install and it locks up as soon as it reads the USB boot
I'm starting to wonder if the CPU itself is glitchy
The M.2 is plugged into the board. I've tried all 3 of the M.2 connections with 2 different drives. The adapter thing is just what I used to check the drives on MY rig (not my daughters) to make sure they were working
This is a M.2 to USB converter. I only use it when I need to check things on a M.2 drive so I don't have to take my PC apart. I put the M.2 in the adapter and then plug it into the front USB of my rig
Side note: thank you everyone for taking the time to reply or give input without being sparky like some other "help boards"...
I am experienced at building these for the last 20 years but I don't get into the 1's and 0's of the whole thing. I've had bad parts here and there both used and new...
One of the 2 motherboards is the new BIOS. The one I just got is still F3. Same issue for both though. Initially, a fresh install of Windows 10 went without a hitch. It was completely loaded and I was getting some settings done and it locked up. I rebooted and it locked again within 5 min. I...
I have two M.2 drives sitting on the desk. I have tried both and same issue. I use my M.2 to USB adapter and can plug them both into MY rig and they both seem fine. I have a new power supply coming just to rule that out... I actually need a backup here anyway.
Next test I'm going to run is to...
