Another positive thing about 7980XE seems to be availability. In my local shop it will be available in 2 days. The same for 7960X and 7940X. For people who care more about money and want Intel 7940X seems to be well priced.
Thats probably the highest overclock that makes sense on the 7980XE, as above that this monster will require a delid and draw too much power anyway. He managed to get very low voltages, its probably why it seemed so power efficient. Its still interesting that even with the standard Intel TIM it...
8x8GB should be preferable to 4x16GB as SS modules have better timings in comparison to DS modules. It's clear if you look at G.Skill website and compare various modules. They also support higher frequencies. You should use the 16GB modules only if you want maximum supported memory = 8x16GB.
For those interested in Threadripper and fearing the segfault problem:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Amd/comments/6ubmd1/ryzen_compilation_segfaults_positive_rma/
it seems only early Ryzen batches were affected. Some people got replacement CPUs and they don't show this detect. Threadripper should...
The Apex and Extreme are now available on Asus website with details - https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel-platform-Products/
It appears they support some crazy memory clocks - Extreme seems to support 8x8GB 4200 CL19 according to QVL. G.Skill released this kit just on 14.8. The Apex seems...
1900X with halved cache, essentially being dual 4 core system with a BIOS switch for creator/gaming mode sounds like a very bad idea. Useful perhaps only if you need to use those PCIe lanes for storage or GPUs, but nothing else.
Do not buy cheap motherboards for high core count Skylake-X. Read http://www.overclock.net/t/1632665/intel-x299-socket-2066-vrm-thread and https://www.hardwareluxx.de/community/f12/lga-2066-mainboard-vrm-liste-1167715.html . Buy motherboard with 8+4 pin connectors or 8+8.
You make a compromise if you accept that not all your needs are met. I don't need more than 128GB memory, in fact 64GB is enough (8x8GB). DDR 3600 and above in 4 channel configuration give a lot of memory bandwidth. Xeons need 6 channel IMC due to usage of low speed ECC memory. I don't need ECC...
Epyc is very specialized and low clock solution. I also don't need that many cores, 12 would actually probably be sufficient. I want something that can handle VR in the future as well. I don't want to buy 2 computers. 1 desktop + 1 laptop must be sufficient. We haven't seen performance of 7980XE...
In Germany prices will naturally be lower as its a bigger market and higher elsewhere. I'm not going to buy 20 computers, just one. For now ignore 7920x at 1339€, it will come down gradually too.
For me computer is like a car. I expect it to last for 5+ years. But unlike cars computers don't...
Asus Rampage 6 Extreme now has details on Asus website:
https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/ROG-RAMPAGE-VI-EXTREME/HelpDesk_QVL/
I was really surprised by the QVL list. For DDR 4200 there are multiple entries for 8x8GB, with G.Skill being capable of 19-19-19-39. For DDR 3800 there are also...
Did anybody find an explanation why are the Threadripper latencies much higher than expected in comparison to standard Ryzen?
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/amd-ryzen-threadripper-1950x-cpu,5167-2.html
CPU | Cross-CCX Average Latency |...
Just like zucker2k said the difference in total price is not that great. I'm also considering 7980xe, as it will be a nice cpu for VMs without compromises.
