Sweet! I didn't log in today yet (again, just hit the 250 mark last night on the last mission I did, thanks for letting me know of the max). Like I said, I am really looking at that new rifle. Not a fan of the new grenades (they are too slow to explode, and don't do enough damage otherwise without the explosion to make them useful since it doesn't bring the enemy down... now if they got staggered, and halted whatever they were doing when hit with one until it explodes, they would be useful).

Just an FYI, right now damage over time is bugged. So the new grenade (thermite(sp) one) is 100% worthless unless you are the host. The bug being unless you are the host, you don't deal DOT damage.

Persona 5 Royal. Which is funny that I'll be wrapping the game up a few days before it's going to go on sale on Steam for Golden Week for $30. Would have bought it on Steam if it was on sale when I started this playthrough but no they had to put it at $60 so just played my PS4 copy instead since I didn't feel like spending $60 for the bump from 30 fps to 60 fps.

Dragons Dogma kinda got stale after a bit of time away from it so I fired up Shadows of War. 100% how any "open world" game should be done.

WB has basically perfected the formula at this point. As Suicide Squad shows, the only direction they had left to go was down.

I just wanted to share that I couldn't finish Baldur's Gate 3. I think I'm in the middle of Act 3.

Things got old and stale fast when clever environmental gameplay all became obsolete because my characters are so OP. Still a good game though but it's not a huge time sink for me.

I've been playing OW2 mainly. Fun game.

Elden Ring is great, but even it's gotten old. I'm actually bit worried that the DLC wouldn't be fun because I'm just so sick of the whole game / mechanic. 10/10 game.

P5R was hyped up so much for me. I was so excited since everyone hyped that game up and I haven't played a proper turn-based JRPG since Chrono Trigger probably.

The summon breeding thingy is just not that fun. Also each battles feel more like a puzzle than fight. I just couldn't get into it after the first mansion boss. Bummer.

You think you were worn out by the long tutorial that basically extends halfway through the first palace? I think I was hooked into P5 immediately just by the music with songs like Beneath the Mask and Last Surprise, but the tutorial intros in Persona 3-5 can all be pretty annoying. All the bossfights are like that though: penetration testing to see what they're weak to and then exploiting those weaknesses to be able to do baton passes for extra attacks as well as technical attacks that can take off a ton of health. E.g. by technical attacks I mean if you set the enemy on fire and then do a wind attack while they're burning it does way more damage. Or you put someone to sleep and then physical attack.

The fusions via executions in the Velvet Room are one of the main ways you gain new attacks and support skills, though you can also stun enemies in battle and negotiate at gunpoint to get them to join you so you can summon their personas and use their skills in battle. That's another puzzle though, as you want to scare some enemies, be sympathetic to others, cracks jokes to others, and so on, and just have to guess which dialogue will be most helpful based on how they talk to you. The negotiation to get new personas is probably the better way in the early game, but later on when you forge a strong bond fusion becomes way better. E.g. if you level up your relationship with Ann any persona you fuse in the Velvet Room that is of Lovers arcana will get a big level boost and you immediately have access to some of their higher level skills without having to learn them via earning experience in battle. And similar for other confidants and their arcanas.

I don't think Persona 5 Royal is as good as Chrono Trigger; that's pretty much the GOAT of turn based JRPG, though I do like Persona's combat a lot more and I consider P5R to be probably the best JRPG to come out since the days of the PS2. (Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne on PS2 is right there with Chrono Trigger for my favorite JRPG of all time, though SMT is the series Persona spun off from and the boss fights are way more complicated of puzzles than the Persona ones are.)

I did all that. Just not my thing I guess. Felt more like puzzles and negotiating with summons, etc.

The story was cute enough. I felt like I was in a slice-of-life high school anime and I felt like I was a teen again watching one.

I've been playing Black Mesa, the fan remake of the original Half-Life. It's not terrible. I hadn't played HL in over 20 years, so there's a familiarity to it, but I really don't remember much about the original game...(where things are, etc.)
I've had the game in my Steam library for a couple of years, just never bothered to fire it up.

After having a few days to play, what do you think of it? Half Life 1 is one of the few games I have ever played that I'd rate 10/10.

Barely scratched the surface at this point but so far the stand-outs are:

(1) MUCH better and sharper graphics

(2) A brutal reminder of just how far we've come especially along the lines of realistic physics in games .... particularly in terms of NPC's!

Def enjoying it so far though .... will report back!

Maybe Dragon Quest XI S would be a better choice then if you want to scratch a JRPG itch, as the game pretty much plays out just like the series did in the 80s on NES and 90s on SNES, and you can even play it in 2D mode where it looks like an SNES game but played on something really powerful like a Saturn without looking too polished like a flash game or something. It's the original JRPG and Chrono Trigger was basically an allstar compilation between the creators of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. Akira Toriyama's art is amazing in it. I would caution if you get it on console make sure you get the S version since the soundtrack is recorded by the Tokyo symphony orchestra while the non S version uses a terrible MIDI soundtrack. On Steam though I think the S version is the only one you can buy. Dragon Quest XI S was my second favorite RPG last console gen, behind Persona 5 Royal, and last console gen was a pretty good one for JRPG fans (though definitely not as good as the PS2 and PS1 gens).

If you're not into dragons, knights, castles and such you might not like it but the Dragon Quest games are a blast for playing a really old school style JRPG. If you want Dragon Quest style old school JRPG style gameplay but in a different setting surprisingly Yakuza Like a Dragon was able to really nail it too despite it being the studio's first JRPG. In it you play a disgraced yakuza just out of a long prison sentence for taking the fall for another yakuza's crime and treated like a dog by the crew after your release and end up homeless. Then you team up with another homeless guy, a disgruntled cop, and later on others and all the fantasy elements and attacks are explained as the main character's mental illness lol. I haven't played the sequel, Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth, yet, but that's mostly because Sega decided to hide NG+ behind a special edition so I refuse to buy it until there is an edition including NG+ for $30 (I would have bought it day 1 for $70 had they not pulled that crap). Yakuza Like a Dragon is great though.

On a side note if you're interested in either, I would expect both Square Enix and Sega to have Golden Week sales starting on Monday, as Golden Week is a huge holiday for school age kids in Japan. Like Christmas break is here.

Dragon Quest VIII is really amazing too, but you'd have to either play on PS2 or 3DS or emulate. It's such a popular series in Japan that Square Enix moved its release dates from Fridays to Saturdays to keep kids from skipping school to go buy the games haha.

Back to Yakuza Like a Dragon, Sega released this trailer for it on April Fools and the fanbase all thought it was a joke, but we were begging Sega to actually make this game. Until then the Yakuza series had been more a beat'em up, like what a modern Streets of Rage with story would be like.

Is the control and combat as clean as the real thing? Was really impressed with Half Life Source as that was the last version of the game I played, just as awesome as the original Half Life I played on DOS twenty five years ago.

How is it compared to Doom 2016? I keep seeing it go on sale on my wishlist, but I've heard fairly conflicting reviews with some saying it's "more of the same" and others saying they strayed too far from what Doom used to be. 67% off though might be worth it just to check it out.

So far no issues but it seems to .... didn't get to play today so nothing new to report yet.

EDIT: Going to play some now in fact!

It is similar but different. It feels different than Doom 2016 but that could be the engine or the renderer. Combat is the same.

The game is fun over all. It cost me less than $20 so it was a good deal.

I enjoyed both on PS4, I am almost tempted to replay them. I can't wrap my head around someone that would enjoy the first one but not the follow up.
