I'm here. Tone-deaf attitude? "brutal" "disdain" "look at me" - wow. All that because I recycled a 15 year old case and a motherboard and everyone started pooping on me?
I feel like you read into my post how you want to narrate it - can't stop you.
Disappointing that a post really meant...
Well, how many people with a compatible motherboard are using something weaker?
Anything in the 2xxx and above will be faster for most other things than the 1700.
I guess my question could be construed with an obvious "sell it" - and maybe if it was a 3/5xxx series I could see doing that.
The...
I was just throwing out an old Antec case / guts - I even left an ASUS B350 mobo in it.
I pulled out the Ryzen 1700, the 250GB SSD and the 16GB of DDR4 ram.
I have no idea why I kept those parts - the Ryzen 1700 is useless, the 250GB SSD is too small / useless and the ram... well... I have two...
Yeah, I've run a 1700 for years without issue.
My 5600X was run hard for about a year before being set aside as the gaming machine.
My main box, a 5700G, is my daily work machine and driver... never turned off (but I do use sleep on it. Hmm. I did replace the Gigabyte mobo with an Asus because...
A random crash every 4-7 days would be driving me absolutely nuts - if you've swapped P/S, motherboard and RAM... what else is there?
Software?
If you could afford / borrow a second machine to test these pieces in it might help narrow it down.
If its a missions critical machine (business)...
It's too bad this thing is being such a PITA to get going - certainly doesn't start this foray into Intel in a good light.
You've been pretty AMD-centric the last couple of years ( for good reason ) - and because of that, I was hoping to hear your take on the new Intel stuff.
Unfortunately...
I agree with this sentiment - you can't assume Valve will fix everything. There will be things outside their control (DRM).
However, for what it is now I'm still OK.
Plus, it'll be fun to hack on.
I ordered mine 1 day after ordering window opened - i'll be waiting a bit.
I'm excited - even with the current luke-warm reception.
The important bit is its all software that is the issue now - that can be improved in time.
If you didn't know, you can see the state of your current libraries...
As a useless data point, I have been running a 5700G non-stop since September as my work machine.
This thing is loaded at least 8 hours a day.
I have had my machine crash once in that time period.
Running on an Asus B550 with two 32-GB modules = 64GB ram.
I have run it with a 5700XT graphics...
Mark cracks me up - 1070 and a 1060 not worth turning on.
Just for this race, I pulled out my old rig,
Ryzen 1700 + AMD 7950 - I have that box running right next to the dogs bed to keep her warm at night.
My work machine is normally a 5700G alone - but I plopped my old RX 460 in it for after...
I didn't know about this av1 decode issue on the 5700G.
I went to Youtube, found a playlist, found the settings to "always use av1" and ran a 4k balloons video.
I'm running whatever latest version of FireFox is on my machine.
Task manager, on Windows 11, hovered between 8-10% CPU...
I own a machine with a 5600x - my gaming rig.
I also own the 5700G - my work / dev box.
I've owned the 5600x for about a year, the 5700G for 2 months.
For day to day tasks I do on both, I notice no difference
I'm assuming you already have a discrete GPU - then the 5600x is the slightly...
I do wonder how much of that is lip service, vs the Chinese actually care about the carbon emission footprint.
If there is a large carbon cost to Crypto, I wonder why we haven't seen more about this on mainstream news.
I have this image of Greenpeace volunteers chopping down power lines...
Our local chain has some 6600XT's in stock - Asus Dual Fan and a ASROCK model - for $600.
My 5700XT is fine for my needs, but I've almost succumbed to the hysteria a few times this week ... picking up one of the 6600's "just in case."
GPU's do not make a huge difference for Adobe - your 2070 is plenty.
"For Photoshop, it is extremely important to have a supported GPU, but the actual performance of that card will not make a major impact on performance. Compared to the high-end RTX 3090, the much more modest RTX 3070 is within...
I used to have the 18-140 for a time; it is a fine lens with a versatile range.
If you need more zoom, there is the (pricier) 18-300 in Nikon and Tamron(?) variations.
The Android app compatibility / mode has peaked my interest.
What I don't understand is why it's "Android compatibility with help from Amazon" - I thought Amazon's "Android" store for their devices is extremely limited ( assuming its the same mechanism.)
