The seventh BOINC Pentathlon is around the corner. As usual, SETI.Germany invites all BOINC teams to find out which team copes best with the challenges of five disciplines at five projects between May 5 and May 19.

While there are no major rule changes this year, it is ensured that there will be only one winner after the shared gold medal last year. Furthermore, the Pentathlon pages https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/ have undergone an optical refresh, all the rules and later on the stats are there, as well. Many questions are answered in the FAQ: https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/27_en_FAQ.html

Each team that wants to participate can sign up and enter four project suggestions using this registration: https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php form until April 27. Later registration is possible until May 2, but without the possibility of suggesting projects.

Therefore, explore the interest within your team and sign up. We're looking forward to your participation in the BOINC Pentathlon!

Many Greetings: Terminator

I've registered the TeAm for the Penthatlon.
Now we have to decide on the projects - but only four propositions are allowed.
Please post here what you want to race in!

Projects are not eligible if they
  • were chosen in last year's Pentathlon (Einstein@Home, LHC@home Sixtrack, malariacontrol.net, World Community Grid, yoyo@home)
  • can not provide a sufficient number of workunits
  • support just a few operating systems
  • provide non-CPU-intensive (NCI) applications
  • use buggy or test-only applications
  • do not allow the creation of new accounts
  • do not support WebRPC
So WCG is out.

Collatz for The Sprint
Asteroids for The City Run
PrimeGrid for Cross Country
POGS for Swimming

No preferences. I go where I am pointed. Just give me a little warning so that I can set up accounts on the projects if I don't already do them. I do have a problem getting WUs from Leiden for some reason. I put it high up on my priority list, and I don't ever get more than a few units a week.

Everybody has some trouble with Leiden. Set your max. additional work buffer high - at least a day - that should help.

Leiden also limits each user to 128 work units per day (not per host) and that was told to me by the admin back in October last year. Definitely not good for a large challenge. Just letting you know in case that helps with why you have work units issues.

Same here, pretty much. Interested in this race, but I'll have to prepare a bit for it, I think, as I don't have accounts on all the projects. (Haven't really gone for diversity in BOINC.)

Got a mail today:

SETI.Germany <pentathlon@seti-germany.de>
12:30 (9 timmar sedan)
From: SETI.Germany

Dear fellow crunchers,

bad news today. As you may already have noticed, seti-germany.de and the Pentathlon pages have been down since Saturday. The server was hacked and we do not know yet when everything will be back online. Of course, we do not want to bring it back up just to see it being hacked again during the Pentathlon. Additional security measures are being implemented right now.

I really feel bad to have to say this, but we will have to postpone this year's Pentathlon to make sure that we can provide the usual service (stats, daily bulletin, project announcements) and all teams have the opportunity to sign up. We can not give a new date right now, but we hope that we can run it still in May or early June, as we definitely want to avoid the hot summer months.

If you registered your team before last Friday, all information is in our latest backup and will be restored. If you wanted to participate but could not sign up yet, don't worry; we'll make sure that you can still sign up once the Pentathlon pages are back online (of course, you can also submit your project suggestions via email if you like).
We will post a proper announcement as soon as we have a new date. Really sorry for the chaos this year.

Regards,
pschoefer

We'll just have to wait ...

I did not participate last year, but I'm considering doing the pentathlon with the team this year.
So excuse a dumb question or two.

Could someone clarify:
Terminator says:
to find out which team copes best with the challenges of five disciplines at five projects

Petrusbroder says:
only four propositions are allowed.

(I did see a marathon, is that a separate race or a combination of the others?)

The marathon is the fifth discipline. The organizers of the race (SETI.Germany) will pick that. It will run the entire time period of the pentathlon, so you'll have to choose between running the marathon and/or any other disciplines available at any given time.

Thanks Ken,

I have never run Astroids, POG, or Collatz, so that will be new to me if we run those, and add to my growing list of new projects tried............

Since I don't have enough experience in these projects, or the pentathlon, to make suggestions, I am satisfied to follow along with whatever the team decides.

One thing I have learned already is how NOT to spell pentathlon..........

Asteroids and POGS are nice, easy applications to run. Asteroids is a little harder, but both will run on Android devices.

Collatz I haven't run in awhile. Looks like it takes some tweaking.

EDIT: Or not, maybe fixed now :\
