Question A moment of appreciation for my OCZ Vertex 2 SSD

This drive is still with me and still works. Years ago it had an issue where windows wouldn't detect it anymore, but somehow it's still here and working just fine. Not bad.

The flash isn't the problem, it's OCZ firmware.

The flash is the one which can/will wear out in time.

If you've got backups as necessary, and if the downtime related to getting back up and running due to a failed SSD isn't a problem, then why not?

The situation seems stable to me. Why waste what appears to be functional hardware, because for all you know, the solution you're proposing might cause more problems then just letting the old drive keep going in that same timeframe.

They tend to go "pop" like popcorn, when the power glitches out. If you have your PC on a UPS, then good on you. If you don't, I wouldn't use one of the "older" SSDs, that didn't have any sort of PLP - power loss protection.

For a while, Crucial touted having an array of physical capacitors on the MX500 as their PLP. Samsung EVO SATA use a log-structured internal filesystem than can be rolled back cleanly (But is therefore not suggested for RAID installation.)

I recently pulled an old Sandforce PATA SSD from 2012 out of a spares bin and installed it in an old desktop. With no bus or OS support for TRIM, those used to be the way to go.

Still works fine.

I seriously wouldn't trust it with anything important.
