These could be interesting if the street price is right.

I've been considering swapping my 1080P/60Hz 24" monitor for a 27" monitor at 1440p with a higher refresh rate, so it would give me an excuse to swap out the cheap RX 6600 I got last Black Friday (assuming I can also find a nice 27" monitor that is both good for playing games and for color accuracy for PS Lightroom stuff).

For sure, I wouldn't expect anything really on sale yet, but with Christmas sales around the corner, it's one of those things that I might just keep an eye out for. Certainly don't have money burning a hole in my pocket, but I could see buying something if the right sale came around.

Yeah, if you are single minded about it, setup an alert on something like slickdeals and be willing to burn a credit card cash back type incentive on one, I think there will be some deals this fall/winter on GPUs. It seems like the folks waiting for the ETH mining crash did their thing and the deals have to be better in order for the needle to move. IMO.

The 7800XT looks tempting to me.

I'm on the fence. I also want to upgrade from 1080p 144hz display to a higher resolution. Since I keep displays very long I'm thinking 4k but then GPU price becomes an issue and upscaling tech important. And new UE5 games seem to run like crap (even on low settings) so that anything but a 4090 will fail at 4k native.

My solution to that is to use a 4K TV, output 1080p signal to it and voila! Automatic upscaling that is good enough. LG and Sony both have great 1080p to 4K upconversion. Haven't tried any other TV.

Everything high end is going to run like junk on anything less soon. Heck a 4090 isn't enough, I don't think a single game has yet scaled to UE5's "Cinematic" settings, or the new RT settings, which they put in for LED volume post production as much as anything.

"Kids these days!" being a perfectly funny but releveant rant I could go on. I do remember trying to run Crysis at all and being impressed at medium-low, it worked at all! But now if you don't get to max out every setting at native res while running 60fps+ the card is "junk". But considering how high things can scale with raytracing, which is more or less arbitrary (just shoot more rays) it might be a while before you can just automatically max everything without thinking about it on every game.

I'd just get the best card you can afford at the moment.

While I don't have a 4K display, this is yet another reason I love patient gaming. Today's mid-range card's will play yesterday's titles at max settings, 4K res, 120+hz more often then not.

And if they don't... just wait a bit longer...

I went 4K at 28", mainly for work so I had it colour calibrated but also for 4X games. It's only 60Hz & not the brightest (420nit) but 28" is comfortable on a desk & not too much difference to 27" 1440p 165Hz displays on either side. You can buy 28" 4K 144Hz IPS displays now for what I paid for my 60Hz a couple of years ago ($400+)

If your have good eye sight you can use a 27" 4K display at native resolution. I run multiple 4K monitors at work and don't have too many problems. I do have one set to run at 1440p though so if there's anything that needs a little magnification I can just move it to that display.

But unless you need the real estate a 1440p display is going to be fine for a lot of things. You can get a 21:9 display if you want a bit more room than 16:9 usually gives you. That and if you want something that's going to be good for gaming, a 1440p monitor is going to be a lot less expensive or will let you get better visual quality for the same amount of money as a less impressive 4K monitor.

I've tried 32in 1440p displays and the pixel density is just too small to the point the image looks grainy. So, for my gaming, I choose to use a 27in at 1440p with higher refresh rates (144 and 165Hz in my household). I agree with you that keeping up the hardware necessary to run 4k at max settings is a bit of an expensive game I choose not to play these days.

27” is what I was thinking mainly due to distance however what you said makes good sense. Thanks for the feedback.

Your eyesight must be excellent for you to see that.

I have the same size and resolution, and probably sticking with it for now, even though it seems to have some backlight issues. I just don't see any 4k monitor currently on the market to be persuasive enough for me to upgrade.

I definitely agree but can’t/won’t pay the 4K tax :/

I just have a nice Dell 32” 1440p gaming monitor on my gaming PC as in game I think it looks great in motion and just make do when I am using it for general purpose. Then on my work PC I use a 28” 4K main and 2x Dell 25” 1440p monitors in portrait mode to either side. I really like 1440p on a 24/25” monitor.
