Hi guys,

I just "upgraded" my daughter's system from a Ryzen 3 2200G to a Ryzen 7 1800X. 1 gen older, but twice the cores and 4x the threads. Also added a Sapphire 5600XT while I was at it.

Also have a Noctua NH-U12S SE-AM4 installed on the CPU, with Cryorig CP7 thermal paste applied.

All this is in an Inwin A1 ITX case.

I noticed the fans were spinning louder than normal, so I downloaded HW Monitor and I see my temps are pretty high.

Mainboard ~40C

TMPIN5 ~65C

TMPIN6 ~117C

TMPIN7 ~54C

TMPIN3 ~40C

Obviously TMPIN6 is of concern, but I'm wondering if it's even accurate. I googled around and some people say to update the BIOS. However, I went to the Asrock download page at https://www.asrock.com/mb/amd/fatal1ty b450 gaming-itxac/index.asp#BIOS for my mobo model and it has the following caveat for the newer BIOS versions:

*ASRock do NOT recommend updating this BIOS if you are going to use Pinnacle, Raven or Summit Ridge CPU on your system.

My 1800X seems to be a Summit Ridge CPU?

The newest BIOS version that doesn't have this caveat is v5.10 that was released in 2022.

Do the BIOS versions with the caveat not support 1800X?

Edit: Updated to BIOS v5.10, and noticed that CPU temp in BIOS is around 65C, which tallies with TMPIN5. Rebooted and ran HWMonitor again and TMPIN5/6/7/3 are all around the same values, but I also noticed the CPU package temp is around 40C, which is probably about right? Also noticed that the fans no longer spin like crazy.

The 1800x is a 95 watt CPU and will run hotter. Your cooler is marginal for that CPU. Either get a better cooler or get a 65 watt CPU like a 5600G if you need video.

If you don't need video then a Ryzen 5 3600 is both affordable and powerful on the used market.

I read your edit.

I have the NH-U12S SE-AM4 in a compact ATX build. I was wondering how you were using a cooler that tall in a SFF build. But that case is a heckin' chonker. 😄 It should have no trouble with cooling the 1800X.

I'd ignore "TMPIN6 ~117C" HW monitoring software can have issues with sensors on some ASRock boards I've owned including your model which I recently sold. If you want peace of mind use an IR temp gun to check temps. My ASRock B550M-ITX/ac has 2 sensors with the same crazy temps with the latest release of HWiNFO. IR gun shows low 60's c for the hottest spot. No instability for long gaming sessions either.

I use curve optimizer and a custom fan profile for my builds to balance temps and noise. Sometimes CPUs will boost higher too.

Thanks guys. I got the 1800X, Noctua cooler and the 5600XT free. I already had to buy the Noctua mounting kit off Amazon, so don't intend to spend anything more. My daughter chose the case (it's the white version) 6 years ago, it looks pretty good actually, and supports coolers up to 160mm - the Noctua comes up to 155mm IIRC.

Anyway, temps seem good now (40C package according to HWMonitor).
