Have a HP i3-12100 desktop PC running Win11 Home. Purchased 7 months ago. Connected to monitor via a HDMI cable.

Yesterday, when I did a power on boot, the keyboard backlight went on/off as it normally does but then the monitor screen stayed black. Then the monitor popped a message saying that "No HDMI signal from the computer". Held the power on button in for 10 seconds and the PC powered off. Tried to boot again but same thing happened. Pulled the power plug for 10 seconds and plugged back in. Did a power on boot and same thing happened.

On the next power on boot, I tapped the F10 key and the PC booted into the BIOS. Was able to view the BIOS settings using the USB keyboard for navigation. When I exited the BIOS, it did not boot into Win11 and the screen stayed black. "No HDMI signal from the computer" message popped up again.

Booted into BIOS again but this time when exited the BIOS, Win11 booted up. Everything in Win11 worked normally. I left the PC on overnight and this morning Win11 is still running normally.

ANY IDEAS?

PS: Normally when I press the power on button momentarily, there is about 1 second delay, then the power on LED comes on and then the PC boots into Win11. When the problem was happening, when I pressed the power on button momentarily, the power on LED came on immediately. Not sure why.

The PC has a 256 GB SSD for the C drive (came in the PC) and a 1 TB HDD for the D data drive (I added). Although everything was working fine for months, my only guess is that the mechanical "D" drive HDD might have developed an intermittent SATA interface causing the hang with a black screen when booting into Win11.

So while everything was working (as highlighted above, [expand to see highlighting] ), I copied the D drive to a spare 1TB HDD that I had. Then replaced the D HDD with the spare drive.

So far I can power on boot into Win11 normally even when the PC was powered off overnight (cooled down). This is step-1 of troubleshooting. If the problem returns, I'll continue this thread. Otherwise, assume the problem is resolved for now.

If it isn't resolved, try turning off Fast Boot in BIOS and Windows' power settings.

Was able to find fast boot in Win11 and turned it off. But on a power off shutdown and then power on boot, I didn't see any difference in the boot process.

Unable to find a fast boot option in the BIOS. I have seen and turned fast boot on/off in the BIOS for other PCs but could not find an option for it in this HP i3, 12100, M01-F2254 PC with AMI BIOS.

Without an option for fast boot in the BIOS, I guess it won't help since the black screen hang used to happen before the Win11 splash screen displayed.

Either place would work if it's the issue. On an HP, it's probably not available in the BIOS. Changing it in the Windows power settings would manifest well before the Windows splash screen.

EDIT: bba-tog, I think you might have solved one of my problems.

Here's what happened:
  1. === Black screen problem ===
  2. The black screen on power on boot was happening. After multiple shutdowns and power on boots, the black screen problem went away by itself.
  3. I copied the 1 TB "D" HDD to a spare 1 TB HDD that I had and replaced the D drive. Troubleshooting step-1 in case the D drive SATA interface was intermittent causing the boot process to hang with a black screen.
  4. Shutdown the PC for the night.
  5. === 51 seconds to display desktop icons problem ===
  6. This morning when I did a power on boot, the PC booted into Win11 and the taskbar displayed but the desktop icons did not display for 51 seconds.
  7. After trying different things, I turned off fast boot in Win11 as you suggested.
  8. On the first shutdown and power on boot, the 51 second delay was still happening.
  9. But on subsequent 3 shutdowns and power on boots, the desktop icons displayed instantly.
  10. So it looks like your suggestion to turn off fast boot in Windows fixed the 51 second delay to display the desktop icons problem.
  11. Googling what turning off fast boot in Windows does, I think I understand why it fixed the 51 second delay problem.
Thanks man!

RE-EDIT: As of this morning, 5/1/24, the 51 second delay to display the desktop icons is back. So turning off Win11's fast boot was not the final fix after all. Strange that it's only happening on my Win11 PC (desktop) but not on my Win10 PCs (tower and laptop). I'm pretty sure that it is being caused by my paid for Bitdefender Total Security in the Win11 PC, though BD is also installed in the other two Win10 PCs.

So I'm prepared if it happens, any ideas on what the slow boot will show if the problem re-occurs?
It's not that it should show anything. Just that Fast Boot may indeed be the culprit. Which is why I was suggesting that you wait until you see whether you've already fixed it. Changing multiple things at once leaves the possibility of never knowing what exactly fixed the issue (assuming that it doesn't happen again).

Couldn't it be a GPU issue?

Some of the problems, particularly the desktop icons slowness to display, sounds like it could be involved.

Are you guys still getting the option to turn off fast boot in the power options in control panel?
I have no such options there anymore and had to regedit to turn off fast boot.

Power Options -> Change what the power buttons do -> Change settings that are currently unavailable, uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Yeah, I don't get that tick box. When I checked using the CMD it said that everything was enabled so I disabled it with regedit which was pretty simple but I'd be happier if I never had to go into the Windows registry again!

Control Panel > Power Options -> Change what the power buttons do:
- When I did it, I saw that "Turn on fast startup" was ticked along with Sleep and Lock but they were grayed out. I got confused when I couldn't untick them.

Then I finally saw "Change settings that are currently unavailable" in the upper part of the text. Not a tick box but just blue text. Clicking on it then enabled the "Turn on fast startup" and the other 3 options. Unticked "Turn on fast startup" and also unticked Sleep and Lock.

I don't get any options about fast start at all no matter what I do in the control panel. I used to so I know exactly where you guys are describing.

Doubtful, GPU problems tend to be all or nothing, not so much a failure to do only windows specific elements.

I was just thinking that an obvious first thing to do when confronted with any display issue is to see if the problem remains when you exclude the GPU.

Test the HDMI output from the MB and if the trouble persists then at least you've excluded the GPU as being involved.

But I've now read back and found the PC in question uses integrated graphics so, obviously, not applicable in this case.

What kind of display outputs does the motherboard have (eg, another HDMI port, or perhaps a DisplayPort)? Can you try a different one with your monitor?

Hi bba-tcg:
Unfortunately, the 51 second delay to display the desktop icons is back. I've updated my post that said it looked like turning off Win11's fast boot fixed that problem, to verify that it did not fix the problem. Thanks.

During that 51 second span, can you start Task Manager?

Right clicking the taskbar does nothing. Pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del does enter Task Manager. There were a whole lot of processes running during the 51 second delay.

If sorted by CPU time, what's using the most? How about with just the SSD connected and the HDD disconnected ?
Sorted by CPU time, the top 3 mostly are: System, bdservicehost and task manager. (The bdservicehost has the Bitdefender icon so it is definitely a Bitdefender process.)

But the processes are changing so other ones make it into the top 3.
System and bdservicehost mostly hang around near the top.

Even after the 51 second delay and the desktop icons display, the bdservice host is always within the top 6 processes.

I don't have time to disconnect the HDD right now but will try that this evening.

Also check that Microsoft Defender acknowledges that Bitdefender is the recognized AV and isn't competing with it.
