Be stoked you're still here my friend.

Crazy to think about the impact they've had on PC gaming.

Then Romero goofed

You know what surprised me about that? The Demiath Dungeon level actually looks good, even now!

Should have kept the visual style similar to that for the entire game and it just might have fared better.

Very nice.

I still remember the first times I've seen DOOM. The actual first time I played it was in some electronics store in a mall (I do believe in retrospect that it was the Shareware version) while accompanying my father. I was maybe 10 or 11 years-old or so, and like many at the time it blew my mind in little pieces; couldn't believe what I was looking at. I don't recall the exact year that would have been, but my estimation is around mid to late '93. And it blew my mind mostly because, at the time, the only gaming experience I had was from the NES, the Master System, a little bit of Game Gear on the sides thanks to friends bringing that thing to school, and seeing the first couple of TV ads for the Genesis and the Super Nintendo. And believe that my gaming paradigm is all there was, and that nothing else out there could beat those games, or those systems.

I would later get to play DOOM on PC again thanks to my cousin's best friend at the time (early high school years) who's father owned a PC good enough to play DOOM (that's how I got to see "PC gaming" back then, thanks to other people, and people's friends, and people's siblings, etc; the whole 'the friend of a friend of a cousin's friend' who owned X, Y and Z system was a thing for sure). I actually experienced my first ever LAN / Multiplayer action with DOOM at that cousin's friend place and - once again - it was a revealing experience for my little console-gamer world.

Shortly after that I got to play the SNES version (rental only). It was alright, for what it was, but I knew back then that it wasn't the same as the PC version (the concept of games being 'downgraded' to fit on lesser-capable systems wasn't that understood by me at the time). It was fine, nonetheless. But I never bought that version. Fast forward to 1997 is when I first bought my own DOOM game, the PS1 version (still didn't own PC-anything at the time). I believe I did play DOOM 64 prior to that... not 100% sure but maybe. If not, then yeah PS1 DOOM was my first ever owned DOOM game, and I absolutely adored it.

My first ever 'gaming' PC was around 2003, or 2004 (I think it was a Pentium 4, 90% sure of that, if not it may have been a Pentium 3). That was around the years of Unreal Tournament 2003 / '04, and around the years when I started to be completely addicted to Diablo 2 LoD. However, I do remember finally - after all those years - going to some Future Shop store in down town one day around those years and buying DOOM 2 for myself.

So yeah, first saw and played DOOM in maybe 1993, first bought DOOM (2) for myself on PC in 2003, or maybe '04. A ten years gap of anticipation. Thankfully, I'll have to give credits to the Nintendo 64 because that system (along with the PS1 as well) really did help keep my mind busy with great FPS games. It wasn't 'just' about DOOM anymore as soon as Goldeneye 007 and Turok came out. And the PS1 had some great ones too with the likes of the original Medal of Honor, Disruptor, Alien Trilogy and its own DOOM version of course.

Suffice to say that without DOOM, many things in the industry would have played out very differently. We can only be thankful that it was even invented (and that it was invented at that time, too). It was WAY, way ahead of its time.

Just finished Sigil 2. Like the first, it's not one of the best map packs I've played but it had some interesting bits, and it'll be a piece of history.

I played the shareware version of Doom so, so much when I was a kid.

It was basically the game I took places when visiting family when I got bored and didn't want to listen to adults chit-chat over their tea (eventually it was replaced by Fallout to serve the same purpose).

Ran on anything, always had some little secret I hadn't discovered before, played a little differently every time.
